Maybe you could get more detailed information? Upon first reading the Chief's report, it appeared to me that he was saying that the department only responded to 3 fires this year. It had me thinking what do we even need a fire department for (at least such a big one) if they only have 3 fires per year, but now after carefully reviewing the report for a second time, I see it was 3% of their calls, but we don't know how many fire calls there were.

There aren't a lot of fires in NB--the majority of their calls are for First Responders. The size of the Dept. is dictated by their Union contract. The Union leadership hates Mayor Stewart (though those numbers get smaller every year as the old guys retire and the new guys actually support Tim). That old guard pulled a lot of dirty tricks during the last campaign. There were reported sightings of fire trucks stopping on the street and having a guy jump off and take Stewart signs off of people's lawns. Seriously. Most of them don't even live in town. They care about what's good for them, not what's good for NB. The newer guys are afraid of Union retaliation, so they just keep quiet. That small bunch of naysayers will probably be really ugly this year.

The reason the old geezers in there hate the Mayor is because he implemented the first responder system. When Mayor Stewart was a fireman, NB didn't response to EMS calls, can you imagine? Now, over 50% of their calls are first responder related. The old firemen fought back because they had actual work to do. suprise, suprise.

THE FIRE FIRE CHIEF CARR'S REPLY

Frank

The NBFD attended approximately 370 fire incidents so far in 2009.
In part we have been working proactively to prevent the occurrence of fires in the community via a number of community fire safety and awareness initiatives and continued vigilance by our fire inspection bureau.

The department’s staff carries home safety surveys, pre planning surveys, community fire safety talks, fire safety education within our schools, quick strike fire safety awareness campaigns and fire code building enforcement activities. This is in addition to having a smoke detector initiative which provides and assist residents in our community with installation of this life safety equipment.

The NBFD believes that prevention is better than cure. It recognizes that fires in most cases can be the worst day of a person’s life. It is not good when all of one’s treasures, mementos and irreplaceable family items are destroyed in a fire. Our job is not just extinguishing those fires and saving lives during emergency situations, but to create a safer community within our city by preventing and minimizing these events in the first place. This is why our motto is “Making New Britain Safer”.
Our fire department does an outstanding job and continues to support the quality of life and safety we enjoy. We should appreciate the men and women who make their life profession one which support others and give assistance in times of need.
