I want to urge my fellow voters in the 24th district not to forget to vote in the upcoming special election for state representative on January 10. If you're like me, you have had it with politicians promising you the moon during campaign season only to find them raising your taxes shortly after getting into office, i.e. the recent jump we all received in our state income taxes.
And speaking of misleading voters, I recently received a mailer from a candidate running in the 24th, Rick Lopes. On it, there is a picture of Mr. Lopes with a woman and two children. While there is no caption, we are led to believe that he is a family man. Mr. Lopes is single and does not have children. The woman is City Treasurer Teresa Yanchak and those are her two boys. Yet another example of a politician trying to pull the wool over your eyes by making you think they are something they’re not.
But if voters recall, Mr. Lopes has a history of being less than trustworthy and honest. When he was a New Britain alderman, he was caught keeping his car registered in West Hartford in order to avoid paying taxes in New Britain. I guess, it was all right for him to tell us what to pay in property taxes, but I guess he thought he was exempt from the rules. But it’s ok; he apologized – only after someone filed an ethics complaint against him.
Mr. Lopes received discipline at his job a few years ago for rummaging through a fellow legislative staff members desk. The reason: the staffer was of the opposition political party and he was looking for dirt. If this was done in a classroom, the perpetrator would be labeled a bully. I think the tag fits here. But again, there was an apology, again after he was caught red handed.
Voters in the 24th, do not be fooled by slick campaign ads that portray this man as something he is not. There is a candidate running who is the real deal. He is a family man with two children and two grandchildren – all living in New Britain, a U.S. Army veteran and someone who has a strong record of being involved in our community. That candidate is Pete Steele. Pete is a man you can trust to be our voice at the State Capitol not to further his own personal or political agenda.
Let’s not lose this chance to send a message to the career politicians that we want people looking out for what’s best for us, not what’s best for them. Vote for Pete Steele on January 10th for leadership you can believe in.

Since the voters knowingly elected a tax delinquent to the city council and he continues to serve even though he owes what apparently is several years of back taxes, and absolutely no one seems to care that a member of the city council owes the city thousands and thousands of dollars in back taxes, the fact that Mr. Lopes was apparently involved in a scheme to register his car in another town to avoid New Britain's repressive tax rates will probably earn him even more votes among liberal Democrats.

It is surprising that the State Elections Enforcement Commission would have approved Mr. Lopes being allowed to use state taxpayers' taxes to fund his campaign when Lopes can't remember to pay his own to New Britain.
Democrats had a choice, they could have endorsed Sharon Beloin-Saavedra. I guess she's not as "malleable" nor as sycophantic as Lopes and she's tons more honest. But they chose "ne'er do well",Lopes. More surprising than anything was that the DTC even threw Trueworthy under the bus. Then to top it all off, Carlo Carlozzi casts the deciding vote to endorse Lopes. Embarrassing that a sitting Council member would do that but, then again, it fits.

For the commenter quoted above: While Carlozzi is an admitted Liberal Democrat, he has strayed on occasion. I am going to wait until I see what he does on another crucial issue - DeFronzo is against it - for NB before I make any additional personal judgments about Carlo. Although I was never a fan of Trueworthy and did not hide my feelings, the DTC did treat him rather shabbily and for what, Lopes? To me it just shows the strong influence of Don DeFronzo in NB Democrat politics. Since Don and Carlo are close friends and since Don has protected Lopes forever, that might explain Carlo's vote for Lopes. We'll see!

AS Mr. Lopes was not re-elected to our Common Council because of his lack of paying taxes on several cars in his name to the City of New Britain that he served at the time and then to be followed by the rifling of desks at the LOB,---mind you, these are actions that made it to the press makes one wonder how many other lack of moral character actions have not done so--- one can only hope that New Britain residents remember and do not vote him in as their Representative. Mr. Steele must also remember to make sure that all Republicans and Democrats that support him get out their vote that day. Mr. Lopes and others of his type are not those that will serve us honorably---they will only serve themselves, as so many currently serving have proven.
I don't see how having 2 members of the socialist Democratic party hurts Steele? If anything, I would expect the socialist vote to be divided.
Anyone who decides to protect or otherwise support a person with Lope's character should be asked to explain his decision. Why wait to see what he does on another crucial issue before making a personal judgement?
