  3. NEW BRITAIN - During the public Participation period of the city council’s meeting held on October 22, 2008 Mr. Benny Davis of the attorney general's office spoke along with Major Newton of the Salvation Army announcing their support for the temporary food pantry at the Osgood Park facility.

Another speaker from the Spanish Speaking center cited 3,500 individuals are being feed representing 1,500 families and 5% of the city’s population.

After much discussion and public hearing time at the committee level, the Common Council approved the creation of the Osgood Food Pantry, one of two new food pantries to be built in the city of New Britain in order to assuage a growing hunger problem.

Alderman Mark Bernacki stated that the Osgood pool area building has been plagued by vandalism and that the area needs better policing there. That the pool building had just been painted and then graffiti got put on it. It's a sad commentary and a bad reflection on the community and that people should respect the park property. We would hate to have the food taken. I hope this is a successful venture Bernacki stated.

The October 22, 2008 Common Council 13-1 decision comes on the heels of a decision by the Zoning Board of Appeals last Thursday on October 16, 2008 in favor of creating a more expensive, permanent food pantry with a refrigeration unit in back of Salvation Army headquarters on Franklin Square in downtown New Britain.

  8. It is nice to see that Alderman Mark Bernacki is helping out with Walmart to furnish clothing for the kids to deal with the cold.

What about the $264,000 that his leader screwed up by complaining to HUD and we lost not only the food money but heating as well.

Well the Republicans have much to explain for their stupid actions they condoned that was done by Alderman Salvio.

  9. Barack Obama's political campaign killed all interviews with a Florida TV station after Senator Joe Biden, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, faced tough and critical questions from the TV reporter at the Orlando station, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

During a satellite video WFTV's Reporter Barbara West quoted Karl Marx and asked Senator Biden how Obama's comment to Joe the Plumber, about spreading the wealth wasn't being Marxist statement.

Are you joking?, Senator Biden asked WFTV's Reporter Barbara West. She replied, No Sir! End of interview!

  11. The Obama campaign has announced that the Orlando TV station will be PUNISHED by being denied any future interviews with the campaign. The media is now reporting that they expect in an Obama White House any member of the media that reports a story unfavorably about Obama would be silenced. One reporter called it a "black hole of information" in the White House where all information goes in, but none is allowed to come out.

Isn't that another element of Marxism--silence the media?

Isn't another element of Marxism disarming the public? We all know Obama's anti gun positions, if you don't just go to NRA.com and you will learn quite a bit about this guy.

Haven't we just established all of the elements of Marxism?????????????

  12. Alderman Sherwood: Your have been referring of your watching CNN which has been touting Obama’s campaign over the several months.

He has been call a Marxist by a station that I believe is in Florida and his campaign has directed all communication with this station terminated. If that is not a Marxist move as I learned in my history class that I was warned about.

All I can imagine with an Obama administration if any adverse comments should be made about his administration they would be severely dealt with by being shut down.

It appears that the constitution will be out the window along with freedom of speech should he win the election.

Another problem is the passing of wealth from those who have it to the needy is a socialist venture as I see it.

Joe the plumber called it right when he said it’s socialistic.

  13. Mr. Sherwood, you are quoting from a network that is in the tank for Obama. To quote Sean Hannity, they get tingly feelings up and down their legs whenever Obama speaks. The same network you are quoting, predicted on election day 4 years ago that John Kerry was going to win by a landslide in a "walk away election."
We all know that CNN was dead wrong or do you know something we don't about President John Kerry?
Try watching Fox News for a change for some fair and balanced reporting!

By the way, Joe the Plumber was right on the money by accusing Obama of being a socialist. Obama said he would "spread the wealth around." I believe the exact quote from the most famous socialist, Karl Marx was:

"from those who have the most to those who need the most."

Sounds like this reporter in Florida was right on the money when she called Obama a MARXIST and even compared his quote of "spreading the wealth around" to the exact words of Karl Marx.

Alderman Sherwood, it appears you are ashamed to admit that the candidate of your party is a textbook MARXIST SOCIALIST!

Obama, in 2001 Interview, Lamented Failure of Civil Rights Movement to Redistribute Wealth
In a radio interview in 2001, Barack Obama said the civil rights movement failed when it became so dependent on the Supreme Court that it never got around to working toward redistributing income.

Sunday: Barack Obama talks to a voter during a stop at a campaign office in Brighton, Colo. (AP Photo)

A 7-year-old radio interview in which Barack Obama discussed the failure of the Supreme Court to rule on redistributing wealth in its civil rights rulings has given fresh ammunition to critics who say the Democratic presidential candidate has a socialist agenda.

The interview -- conducted by Chicago Public Radio in 2001, while Obama was an Illinois state senator and a law professor at the University of Chicago -- delves into whether the civil rights movement should have gone further than it did, so that when "dispossessed peoples" appealed to the high court on the right to sit at the lunch counter, they should have also appealed for the right to have someone else pay for the meal.

In the interview, Obama said the civil rights movement was victorious in some regards, but failed to create a "redistributive change" in its appeals to the Supreme Court, led at the time by Chief Justice Earl Warren. He suggested that such change should occur at the state legislature level, since the courts did not interpret the U.S. Constitution to permit such change.

"The Supreme Court never ventured into the issues of redistribution of wealth and sort of basic issues of political and economic justice in this society, and to that extent as radical as people try to characterize the Warren Court, it wasn't that radical," Obama said in the interview, a recording of which surfaced on the Internet over the weekend.

"It didn't break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the founding fathers in the Constitution, at least as it has been interpreted.

"And the Warren court interpreted it generally in the same way -- that the Constitution is a document of negative liberties, says what the states can't do to you, says what the federal government can't do to you, but it doesn't say what the federal government or state government must do on your behalf, and that hasn't shifted.

"And I think one of the tragedies of the civil rights movement was that the civil rights movement became so court-focused, I think there was a tendency to lose track of the political and organizing activities on the ground that are able to bring about the coalitions of power through which you bring about redistributive change, and in some ways we still suffer from that," Obama said.

The 2001 interview evokes recent questioning by Joe "The Plumber" Wurzelbacher, the Ohio man who asked Obama about his proposal to raise taxes on people making more than $250,000. Obama told Wurzelbacher he wants to hike taxes on the wealthy so that the government can spread the wealth.

Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton said Monday the comments on the tape have "nothing to do with Obama's economic plan or his plan to give the middle class a tax cut."

"Here are the facts. In the interview, Obama went into extensive detail to explain why the courts should not get into that business of 'redistributing' wealth. Obama's point -- and what he called a tragedy -- was that legal victories in the civil rights led too many people to rely on the courts to change society for the better. That view is shared by conservative judges and legal scholars across the country," Burton said..

"As Obama has said before and written about, he believes that change comes from the bottom up -- not from the corridors of Washington. ... And so Obama's point was simply that if we want to improve economic conditions for people in this country, we should do so by bringing people together at the community level and getting everyone involved in our democratic process," Burton continued.

John McCain's campaign said the tape proves that Obama is too liberal for the White House.

Now we know that the slogans 'change you can believe in' and 'change we need' are code words for Barack Obama's ultimate goal: 'redistributive change,'" said McCain-Palin senior policy adviser Doug Holtz-Eakin.

"Barack Obama expressed his regret that the Supreme Court hadn't been more 'radical' and described as a 'tragedy' the court's refusal to take up 'the issues of redistribution of wealth.' No wonder he wants to appoint judges that legislate from the bench," Holtz-Eakin continued.

National Review reporter Byron York, a FOX News contributor, said the U.S. government already has a progressive tax system that gives money earned by one group to another group, but it's a matter of degree. He added that Obama's outlook on that system hasn't changed.

"It seems clear from listening to this that the Obama of 2001 and probably the Obama of today feels that the government doesn't do that enough, and I think that's probably the big point in this tape," York said.

"You've got to take him at his word," York added. "It seems to me that the tape shows that this is simply a goal he has had for a long time."

In a speech in Cleveland on Monday, McCain said the Obama interview is just another indication that the Democrat wants to increase sharply the amount of government spending.

"Today, he claims he will only tax the rich. But we've seen in the past that he's willing to support taxes that hit people squarely in the middle class, and with a trillion dollars in new spending, the most likely outcome is that everyone who pays taxes will be paying for his spending," McCain said.

  20. Obama has called the constitution defective because it gets in the way of redistribution of wealth. He went on to criticize the supreme court for not using its authority to force redistribution of wealth. He also said that community organizing is the best way to redistribute income. This was all revealed in Obama's own voice just now in a taped interview that aired on Sean Hannity's talk show today.

  27. FOX NEWS BREAKING STORY:

Government Foils Skinhead Plot to Assassinate Obama
Skinheads planned to kill Obama and 102 others in Tennessee.

    FOXNews.com

    Monday, October 27, 2008

Federal agents have disrupted a plot to assassinate Barack Obama and shoot or decapitate dozens of black students in Tennessee, the ATF said Monday.

In court records unsealed Monday, federal agents said they broke up plans to rob a gun store and target a predominantly African-American high school by two neo-Nazi skinheads. Agents said the skinheads did not identify the school by name.

A source in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives told FOX News that the two skinheads, who were picked up in Crockett County, Tenn., were plotting to shoot 88 black students and decapitate 14 others described as non-whites. The source said officials believe the suspects were planning to attempt an assassination against Obama.

The numbers 88 and 14 are symbolic in the white supremacist community.

But officials could not describe how advanced or credible the plot was, nor could they say if they had contacted the Obama campaign.

Jim Cavanaugh, special agent in charge of the Nashville field office for the ATF, said the suspects also sought to go on a national killing spree, with Obama as its final target.

"They said that would be their last, final act -- that they would attempt to kill Sen. Obama," Cavanaugh said. "They didn't believe they would be able to do it, but that they would get killed trying."

According to the affidavit, the suspects planned "to drive their vehicle as fast as they could toward Obama shooting at him from the windows."

The court document states that the suspects planned to dress in all-white tuxedos and top hats during the assassination attempt, and that they stated they were willing to die during this attempt.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton said the campaign would have no comment on the alleged plot. The John McCain campaign also had no comment.

The men, Daniel Cowart, 20, of Bells, Tenn., and Paul Schlesselman 18, of West Helena, Ark., are being held without bond. Agents seized a rifle, a sawed-off shotgun and three pistols from the men when they were arrested. Authorities alleged the two men were preparing to break into a gun shop to steal more.

Attorney Joe Byrd, who has been hired to represent Cowart, did not immediately return a call seeking comment Monday.

Cowart and Schlesselman are charged with possessing an unregistered firearm, conspiring to steal firearms from a federally licensed gun dealer, and threatening a candidate for president.

According to the affidavit, the two suspects met over the Internet a month ago through a mutual friend. Both claimed to have "very strong beliefs and views regarding 'white power' and 'skinhead' views."

FOX News' Catherine Herridge and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

  29. If we were a member of the media, our greatests concern would be censorship. Is this not essentially where Barack Obama and Joe Biden are heading - censorship?

The media either produces positive articles and interviews, or this team will shut them out. Does anyone else see the danger in this type of control, and they are not even in the White House?

A citizen asks a legitimate question, a plumber and he is investigated. An informed, intelligent TV newswomen asks a question that most people want an answer to, and Joe Biden smirks, "Is this a joke?" and "who is writing your questions?" Who are these people, and how are they getting away with this behavior?

Folks, wake up and smell the roses or this country is going to hell in a hand basket. Get some answers before voting. Don't assume it is NOT important who Barack is, what he represents, who his friends are, etc.

When a man believes our Constitution is flawed and he needs to change it, there is a REAL problem with not only that man, but a country that wants to put him into office. So, think about it folks, do you want to be the next guy on Obama's list (like Joe the plumber). And do you, the media, want to be reduced to puff pieces because that is all Barack Obama will allow (as in other Socialist and Communist countries).

Do you want to be completely ignored when your Presidential candidate is asked to explain his relationship with unsavory citizens?

If not, go vote the Barack Obama and Joe Biden ticket?

PRESIDENT OF FRANCE CALLS OBAMA "UTTERLY IMMATURE"

Sources: Sarkozy views Obama stance on Iran as 'utterly immature'
    By Barak Ravid
    Tags: Israel News, Nicolas Sarkozy

French President Nicolas Sarkozy is very critical of U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama's positions on Iran, according to reports that have reached Israel's government.

Sarkozy has made his criticisms only in closed forums in France. But according to a senior Israeli government source, the reports reaching Israel indicate that Sarkozy views the Democratic candidate's stance on Iran as "utterly immature" and comprised of "formulations empty of all content."

Obama visited Paris in July, and the Iranian issue was at the heart of his meeting with Sarkozy. At a joint press conference afterward, Obama urged Iran to accept the West's proposal on its nuclear program, saying that Iran was creating a serious situation that endangered both Israel and the West.
According to the reports reaching Israel, Sarkozy told Obama at that meeting that if the new American president elected in November changed his country's policy toward Iran, that would be "very problematic."

Until now, the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany have tried to maintain a united front on Iran. But according to the senior Israeli source, Sarkozy fears that Obama might "arrogantly" ignore the other members of this front and open a direct dialogue with Iran without preconditions.

Following their July meeting, Sarkozy repeatedly expressed disappointment with Obama's positions on Iran, concluding that they were "not crystallized, and therefore many issues remain open," the Israeli source said. Advisors to the French president who held separate meetings with Obama's advisors came away with similar impressions and expressed similar disappointment.

According to the Israeli source, Sarkozy plans to begin intensive negotiations with the new American administration, regardless of whether it is headed by Obama or Republican Sen. John McCain, even before the new president takes office in January, with the goal of persuading him to continue the current policy on Iran.

But Sarkozy's pessimism does not stem only from Obama's stance; it also stems from the overall behavior of the international community toward Iran's nuclear program, and particularly its inability to agree on a fourth round of Security Council sanctions against the Islamic Republic. This foot-dragging will make it impossible to effect a change in Iran's nuclear policy, Sarkozy believes.

The French intelligence community believes that Iran has already obtained about 40 percent of the enriched uranium it would need for its first bomb, and that at its current rate, it will obtain the rest of the uranium it needs in the spring or summer of 2009.

However, French agencies are divided over what Iran is likely to do once it has this uranium. One view is that the Iranians will immediately make a nuclear bomb, in order to demonstrate their capability. The other is that Iran will continue enriching uranium without making a bomb - at least until it has enough enriched uranium for several bombs.

  39. Obama "toasted" longtime "Jew hater" friend who was PLO spokesman

    latest report from Fox News:
    FOXNews.com

    Tuesday, October 28, 2008

Rashid Khalidi, a professor and activist tied to the PLO, was feted by Barack Obama at a farewell dinner for the Palestinian activist.

The Los Angeles Times is refusing to release a videotape that it says shows Barack Obama praising a Chicago professor who was an alleged mouthpiece for the Palestine Liberation Organization while it was a designated terrorist group in the 1970s and '80s.

According an LA Times article written by Peter Wallsten in April, Obama was a "friend and frequent dinner companion" of Rashid Khalidi, who from 1976 to1982 was reportedly a director of the official Palestinian press agency, WAFA, which was operating in exile from Beirut with the PLO.

In the article -- based on the videotape obtained by the Times -- Wallsten said Obama addressed an audience during a 2003 farewell dinner for Khalidi, who was Obama's colleague at the University of Chicago, before his departure for Columbia University in New York. Obama said his many talks with Khalidi and his wife Mona stood as "consistent reminders to me of my own blind spots and my own biases."

Click here to read the original LA Times story: 'Palestinians See a Friend in Barack Obama.'

On Wednesday, John McCain's campaign accused the newspaper of deliberately suppressing information that could establish the link between the Democratic presidential candidate and the former PLO spokesman.

"Khalidi was a frequent dinner guest at the Obama's home and at his farewell dinner in 2003 Obama joined the unrepentant terrorist William Ayers in giving testimonials on Khalidi's role in the community," McCain spokesman Michael Goldfarb told Florida radio station, Mambi. "The election is one week away, and it's unfortunate that the press so obviously favors Barack Obama that this campaign must publicly request that the Los Angeles Times do its job -- make information public."

Khalidi is currently the Edward Said professor of Arab Studies at Columbia. A pro-Palestinian activist, he has been a fierce critic of American foreign policy and of Israel, which he has accused of establishing an "apartheid system" of government. The PLO advocate helped facilitate negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians in the early '90s, but he has denied he was ever an employee of the group, contradicting accounts in the New York Times and Washington Times.

The LA Times told FOXNews.com that it won't reveal how it obtained the tape of Khalidi's farewell party, nor will the newspaper release it. Spokeswoman Nancy Sullivan said the paper is not interested in revisiting the story. "As far as we're concerned, the story speaks for itself," she said.

The newspaper reported Tuesday evening in a story on its Web site that the tape was from a confidential source.

"The Los Angeles Times did not publish the videotape because it was provided to us by a confidential source who did so on the condition that we not release it," the Times' editor, Russ Stanton, said. "The Times keeps its promises to sources."

In recent months Obama has distanced himself from the man the Times says he once called a friend. "He is not one of my advisers. He's not one of my foreign policy people," Obama said at a campaign event in May. "He is a respected scholar, although he vehemently disagrees with a lot of Israel's policy."

But on the tape, according to the Times, Obama said in his toast that he hoped his relationship with Khalidi would continue even after the professor left Chicago. "It's for that reason that I'm hoping that, for many years to come, we continue that conversation -- a conversation that is necessary not just around Mona and Rashid's dinner table ... [but around] this entire world."

A number of Web sites have accused the Times of purposely suppressing the tape of the event -- which former Weather Underground terrorists Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn reportedly attended.

Sullivan said she would not give details of what else may be on the tape, adding that anyone interested in the video should read the newspaper's report, which was its final account.

"This is a story that we reported on six months ago, so any suggestion that we're suppressing the tape is absurd -- we're the ones that brought the existence of the tape to light," Sullivan said.

The Los Angeles Times endorsed Obama for president on October 19.

  50. Did everyone hear the taped radio interview where Obama calls our Constitution "DEFECTIVE" because it interferes with the redistribution of wealth, and then he goes on to criticize the Supreme Court for not using the court to mandate redistribution of wealth?

If Barrack Obama is elected President, for the first time in our history, we will have a more liberal president than Russia!

  53. Since everyone on here wants to hear from NBC News, here it is:

Chris Dodd Under Investigation for Sweetheart Mortgage Deal

NBC news reports that the Justice Department has begun an investigation into whether Countrywide Financial Corp used the 'Friends of Angelo (Mozilo)' program to buy influence with Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT), Kent Conrad (D-ND), and others. According to a senior Countrywide official who handled its VIP program, there was no way Dodd and Conrad could not have known they were getting a special deal:

...Feinberg says part of his job was to hammer home to the V.I.P. clients that they were getting special deals.

"You spoke in a manner that was different than you spoke with a regular customer," said Feinberg. "'Your loan has been specially priced by Angelo.' 'You're getting special discounts because you're in the V.I.P. loan department."

So what would a "Friend of Angelo" get that an average customer would not? According to Feinberg, the possible benefits ran the gamut.

"They got a discount on the interest rate," said Feinberg. "They got discounts on their fees. They got a free floatdown option before closing..."

"There were many, many taglines we used to let them know their level of importance to make sure that they understand where they're located," said Feinberg. "And nine times out of ten, once you mention 'V.I.P' the person's gonna ask you 'what am i getting for being in this V.I.P department?' Or 'what am I getting because I know Angelo?' Or 'I talked to Angelo and he said I'm getting this...'"

Feinberg says he's not aware of any discounts linked to favors, but he did see e-mails noting the potential value of the relationships to Countrywide's political and business interests. The e-mails noted one particular client was "of importance to Countrywide." Another encouraged a discount, noting "they are incredibly important to us." Yet another asked that the loan officer, "make an exception" in Countrywide's lending rules, "due to the fact that the borrower is a Senator."

If Dodd and Conrad somehow missed the special treatment they were receiving, Feinberg's testimony suggests that it was only because they chose not to listen. Nevertheless, Dodd is still refusing to release the paperwork related to his loans--information he promised to share weeks ago.

  54. Hi Everyone,

Here is some food for thought before the Election on Tuesday:

Have you ever heard news stories of people who create a problem so they can be the Hero to Fix it? A good example of this (or should I say more recognizable example) is the occasional firefighter who lights minor fires (dumpster, grass or trash fires) so that he/she can be the first on the scene to put it out and be the hero. Sometimes that desire to be the "Hero" grows stronger and stronger putting him/her in a position to escalate the illegal and dangerous activity by lighting larger fires so they can get on TV and such. Eventually that person gets caught and the effects it has on his/her department is drastic as well as affecting other people's lives and livelihoods.

Isn't it funny that 2 yrs ago (Nov 2006), the Democrats regained full control of both the US House and US Senate and one of the many promises that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made was that they (the new Democrat Majority) would bring down the already high price of fuel and gas prices (they were at $2.29 per gallon at that time nationwide average). After that point, Pelosi and gang not only failed to reduce gas and fuel prices , but the prices rose steadily to an all time high back in the spring of this year and held at that point for a few months till mid July, where they rapidly started to drop over the past few months till now. The fuel prices are now back to just about the same price as they were 2 yrs ago and how convenient just before election day.

Couple this Government created problem of Energy Dependence on Foreign oil with another failure of the stock markets and mortgage industry in the past few months just before an election (a problem that John McCain and other Republicans warned Congress about over 2 yrs ago) and it sounds just like that volunteer firefighter. The Democrats think they are the only ones capable of fixing the problem and are convincing many Americans to vote for them even though they are the ones who caused the problem in the first place. Connecticut's own Senior Senator was caught with his hand in the Fannie Mae cookie jar, and he comes across acting like he did nothing wrong, and yes Senator Obama is also neck deep in that one.

I believe it was Ronald Reagan who said "Government is not the solution to our problems, they ARE the problem!" (forgive me if I'm wrong)

"Joe the Plumber" has gotten a lot of press lately and is now a celebrity. All he did was ask a simple question to Senator Obama about taxes and punishing people who are successful in business. It's not what Joe asked that made him famous, it's Barack Obama's response that made Joe famous for asking the question that forced Obama to show his true self. Obama's answer was that he felt that the wealth that the achievers have earned in this country needs to be spread around so that other people can have the opportunity that they have.

Well as a business owner who just happens to be the third generation owner of our family's plumbing business, I was taken back by that "spread the wealth" comment just like so many other business owners across the country. This is why Joe the plumber is a celebrity because so many people can relate to his concerns about Barack Obama's tax plan. This tax plan amounts to nothing more than the traditional Socialism/Marxism concept of wealth re-distribution (ya know "From each according to his abilities too each according to his needs" Karl Marx) With Obama's socialist tax plan and his running mate Joe Biden telling americans that it's Patriotic to pay higher taxes, this is simply UN-American and needs to be stopped now.

Obama keeps telling us that he wants to build this economy from the ground up, because a Trickle Down Economy doesn't work. From the ground up?! Could that possibly mean that this grounding of the economy was intentional? I would bet it was.

Ronald Reagan taught us that everything trickles down, including punishment via taxation through loss of jobs, wages, economic growth, etc. Remember, corporations don't pay taxes, they just pass it on down the line which ends up right in our middle class laps. (The very people Obama claims to want to lift up) Wealth can also trickle down through the system by cutting taxes on everyone unless government gets in the way by out of control spending.

Based on the importance of the economy, there is a clear choice for president because our economy has to be the number 1 issue among many: McCain is proposing cutting taxes on ALL americans and cutting government spending which are the two things needed to stimulate an economy (like during the Reagan Years) and Obama's tax plan is all about punishing the very people who create wealth and jobs in this country and that punishment will "trickle down" to EVERYONE.

I will close with the motto on the side of my trucks: "Freedom is NOT Free!"

    Thanks for reading,

    Mike

  55. The decision by the Democratic (?) members of the Common Council to table the nomination of a Republican to the Board of Education, to fill the position vacated by Marilyn Kraczkowski is obviously for payback for the "Wall of Fame" nomination of Ed Kierycyk (sic) to the Council...the Dems wanted Lopes to fill a vacancy on the council. What they refused to face at the time was that Mr. Lopes had lost the Alderman election by a landslide. Praise the Lord Lopes was not appointed at the time. The next day, it was all over the TV news that Lopes and a colleague were caught on video tape rummaging through a desk at the State Capitol. Senator DeFronzo should have fired Lopes on the Spot...Lopes, the a******!

  57. This topic is closer to home, and something we hopefully can do something about:
Almost every parking lot has Handicap Accessible parking spots, with those blue signs posted close to the entrances to the stores. Many of the signs have a fine listed for those without a handicap permit parking in these spots. It almost never fails: Every time I have been to the larger parking lots, such as Wal*Mart, Stop & Shop, etc. someone without a handicap parking tag or license plate selfishly parks in one of these spaces, forcing handicapped people to park further away from the building. I know the Police cannot constantly patrol these large parking lots, so why can't the stores designate their security people to pass out tickets to violators, causing them to pay the fines posted on the signs? This would open up the spaces to the disabled and bring in more income to the city and/or state. As an incentive to the businesses to do this, perhaps they can be paid 10 percent of the proceeds to do so.

    ReplyDelete
  58. That is a good point about the handicapped parking, however it is doubtful that the stores would want to get involved because they would be issuing tickets to paying customers, and the store would not want to offend a paying customer. What has been done by some other towns in the area is that they have sworn in security personnel at large facilities to be able to issue municipal parking tickets on their property, but I am not sure that New Britain has any shopping centers where they would have security personnel to do such a job. Places like Westfarms Mall and other malls have done this. What might be a workable alternative would be to have the parking enforcement officers currently working for the parking authority patrol these parking areas throughout the day and have them issue the violations. The fines for handicapped parking violations are so high that it would pay for itself to have the parking officers issue them. Instead of having the officers standing outside the hospital issuing tickets to expired meters of handicapped parkers parked in handicapped spaces (which incidentally is a violation of Connecticut General Statutes)they could be patrolling the large shopping centers for handicapped parking violations. Now all you need is the cooperation of the parking authority which is doubtful. New Britain is a city where no one seems to cooperate or work together on anything, and I believe that attitude comes from the top down, beginning with the mayor's office.

  59. Special: Obama Bought Election with $650 Million

A Newsmax special report by Kenneth Timmerman finds that Barack Obama beat John McCain for one reason: he spent more. Obama raised a record-breaking $650 million. But now new questions have emerged about shadowy foreign donations in excess of $60 million. And Obama still has not released the names of donors who gave him almost $300 million.

    ReplyDelete
  60. If the parking enforcement officers can't enforce the handicapped parking, then why can't we assign that task to someone from the police department? Don't we have a traffic division? Perhaps they could assign an officer to patrolling the shopping centers to issue violations in the handicapped parking areas, not to mention what else they might discover in the process since people who disobey the law usually disobey many laws, not just parking violations. I'm sure it wouldn't be long before they were discovering unregistered vehicles, drivers with suspended licenses, and even drivers that were wanted on other charges, so why not give it a try? This is how Rudy Giuliani and Police Commissioner Howard Safir cleaned up New York City by using what they called Zero Tolerance. They stopped everyone for minor traffic violations, parking, jay walking, etc, and used that as a means to check on the individual and found thousands that were wanted on outstanding warrants, so this could be a small way to start cleaning up New Britain and ridding the city of a few criminals. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out that if one guy commits 2 burglaries a day and you lock him up on an outstanding warrant, all of a sudden your burglaries are going down. Multiply that by however many wanted criminals you locate, and then you see how NYC lowered their crime statistics almost overnight. Patrolling the shopping centers could be a good tool for the police department if they chose to use it properly.

  61. Now that Bozek has lost yest another election against the Democrats:

"If there is any political justice at all, Tom the Bummer will be shown the door by the Democratic leadership of New Britain, for his exuberant, unending and unreserved hostility to the Democratic party. He can do that if he likes but he has zero right to expect to retain his powerful rewards from the Democratic party after working so hard to destroy the party's chances. Wrong as is he, he should be gone — and good riddance."

  62. Mayor Stewart:

I was delighted to hear of your plans to veto the council’s recent appointment of Leslie Jacobs to the Board of Education and I commend you for your plan to do the right thing for the children of this city.

The Republican Party worked hard to find a suitable appointee for this vacancy and they found what they believed was the right person in Jamie Giantonio. Mr. Giantonio has a background in teaching and is the parent of two young children, so he has a vested interest in the well being of our educational system.

Filling of this vacancy, being a Republican seat on the Board, should be left up to the leadership of the Republican Party, free from interference of Democratic Aldermen who appear to have other interests besides the welfare of the children in mind.

The public and more specifically, the parents, agree. I have heard from a number of parents who are simply outraged over this entire process. A long line of public members, mostly parents, spoke against this appointment at the council meeting last Wednesday, but the council simply chose to ignore them. I urge you to listen to the people of this city and do what is right for our children.

VETO THE APPOINTMENT OF LESLIE JACOBS!
