  2. The mayor has nothing but empty promises on most issues because he does nothing all day but play golf on city time. Wouldn't you all like to find a 6 figure job that pays you to hang around the country club all day?

This property manager works for the mayor, and the mayor obviously lacks any management responsibility to hold one of his subordinates accountable. What kind of horse droppings is that for the mayor to blame the lack of any response on someone he has direct control over? Perhaps it is time we found a mayor who has the management ability to hold his own employees accountable for performing the job that is delegated to them.

All the seniors, the Connecticut Bar Association employees, and the CCSU students that use that garage in the evening should take note of this situation and remember it at election time next year. It will be your turn to hold Tim Stewart accountable for his total inaction!

Boy do we need change in New Britain.

  3. Swearing by the Mayor has been a poor example for our children to look up to as a role model.

  4. The Mayor’s rudeness towards people has a lot to be desired.

  5. Mr. Smith as you have recently reported what happened in Vegas with the IAFF sectioning both the Mayor and the Fire Chief for the many grievances that were filed against the both of them for being abusive towards the employees.

The resolutions filed with the IAFF cite both the Mayor and Fire Chief for “transferred, skipped for promotion, disciplined, docked pay, and docked vacation time of union officers.” The citations also allege that both the Mayor and Fire Chief have disregarded the collective bargaining agreement which has led to the union filing over 50 grievances (only 4 of which the city has prevailed) as well as numerous prohibited practices and the filing of 2 civil suits.

Maybe all the cost for the aforementioned should be made public by the mayor’s office so that the taxpayers would know how much this adverse activity cost them.

  6. He spends too much time on the golf course.

  7. Promises rarely kept.

  9. As a former IAFF union official, I think the public deserves to know exactly how much the taxpayers of New Britain spent fighting grievances, arbitrations, unfair labor practices and civil suits--especially since the union prevailed against the city in most of the cases.

How about it Mr. Mayor, why not let the public see how much of their money has been spent on these issues?

  10. Tell us the cost Mr. Mayor for all the grievances and Suits.

We, as taxpayers, deserve to know the answer.

  11. yes indeed, we want to know exactly how much money you have been wasting.

  12. I would like to know how much it cost the public for the renovations to the fire house so that the new oversized fire truck the fire chief bought would fit into the garage?

  15. Our daughter works at city hall and she indicates that the morale has gotten very bad during the last year.

    ReplyDelete
  16. How about if we put in a time clock in city hall, and every time he goes to the golf course, he should punch out and deduct the hours spent playing golf from his salary. We could probably balance the budget if we didn't have to pay him for all the endless hours spent on the golf course.

  17. The rumors at city hall carry the threat of lay offs.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The Council members should mandate that the safety features for the Szczesny garage be installed without any further delay in order to protect the general public.

I was appalled to read the property manager of the city comment’s that they are to many priorities to deal with first.

The safety of people should always come first.

Not only did Mr. Smith push for this to be done but the New Britain Herald‘s reporter Mr. Rick Guinness wrote many stories covering the many vehicle damages that occurred with the Mayor’s only suggestion was that the seniors should get better insurance coverage’s.

It’s apparent the current leadership attitudes must be changed at city hall.

  20. I see the mayor is getting the heat on this blogs new segment "Tell it to the Mayor."

That is great and maybe the taxpayers will get some answers as to why our taxes have been raised so much.

  21. "Phil Sherwood IS THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE..."
If feels good to be loved.

  22. Regarding the guy who said that the council should mandate that the cameras be installed in the garage, it is my understanding that they already did that months ago. Who do they issue this mandate to? The mayor? The same guy who is sitting on his hands and doing nothing? They can issue all the mandates they want, but if the chief executive of the city is irresponsible and won't do his job, there is not much the council can do about it. You bet he would act fast if the cars at the Stanley Golf Course were getting vandalized. The problem does, and always will rest with the mayor who just doesn't seem to care to resolve this problem, just like so many other issues currently facing the city.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Will someone be printing all these questions for the mayor and bringing them to him on the 18th hole? You could send them to the office, but he almost never goes there. You have a better chance catching him at home in the middle of the day, or if he does go out, the golf course.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm glad to see Phil Sherwood feels good today as he prepares to watch his messiah ascend from the clouds in the Greek temple, but how will he feel next week on the news of the McCain/Palin Victory?

The news today is that with the word of what a true Socialist Obama really is, the 24% of the voters who have remained undecided are flocking to McCain like flies to manure. The Obama campaign is in panic mode trying to stop the drop of his poll numbers. See you on Wednesday Mr. Sherwood.

    ReplyDelete
  25. telling it to this mayor is like talking to yourself!

    ReplyDelete
  26. BETTER BE CAREFUL HOW YOU CRITICIZE THE MAYOR. WITH HIS UNCONTROLLABLE TEMPER, HE IS LIABLE TO YELL AND SWEAR AT YOU IF HE FINDS OUT WHO YOU ARE. YOU KNOW HOW MEAN HE CAN BE.

  27. "The Obama campaign is in panic mode trying to stop the drop of his poll numbers. See you on Wednesday Mr. Sherwood"

Hmmm....32 out of the 34 polls released in the last couple of days show Obama in the lead and or tied. The two exceptions are in Arizona and Alaska, the home states of John McCain and his VP nominee, respectively.

I did not get the memo about the Obama campaign being in a panic, then again I was too busy calling newly registered independent voters tonight to watch FOX news so I may have missed it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. It doesn't matter what the mayor wants because one of the tenets of socialism is to eliminate local government as the strong central government takes over all the power, so when we have a socialist President take over next week, that will be the beginning of the end of local governments like the City of New Britain.

    ReplyDelete
  29. An AP poll found that only 6% of Americans would describe Obama as "liberal," let alone socialist.

Interesting that McCain and his attack dog keep harping on this even though it doesn't seem to resonate.

Than again, what else do they have.

Guess Joe the Plumber didn't exactly work out either. A recent poll shows 64% of the public views him unfavorably. http://hotair.com/archives/2008/10/19/poll-64-of-democrats-view-joe-the-plumber-unfavorably/

I know, I know, it's all a conspiracy. It's the socialists that control the media and the polls.

But if 24% of the undecided voters have chosen Maccain recently, that begs to question, what about the rest? Maybe they're going to Nader! Doubt it actually. If you care about facts....after the last debate, nearly six in ten undecided's indicated they were now leaning towards supporting Obama (Obama 57%/McCain 43%).

The polls will certainly even out and it will be closer than it is now but to suggest there's evidence of McCain momentum is intellectually a bit dishonest. It's up to the voters after all and who knows how the voters in PA, FL, CO and NH will react since the president of France endorsed McCain today.

  33. Sounds like Alderman Sherwood drank too much Kool-Aid while he was watching his messiah. He says that only 6% of the public view Obama as liberal when he is in fact the most liberal Senator in the US Senate? Interesting.

Check out the Rasmussen poll that will be released in the morning revealing that the majority of Americans now believe that McCain is the one who can best be trusted to fix the economy. Sounds like you might just find yourself crying in your Kool-Aid on Wednesday morning. Right now on Fox News (the most watched news channel in America) the Democrats and Republicans are arguing over whether race, or Obama being a Marxist is hurting him more with the American people! The Democrats are claiming it is racism that has Obama's numbers dropping like a brick, while it is the Republicans saying it is because of his
    Marxist views.

You should tune in to the fair and balanced channel for a change and get the accurate news for once. The Investors Business Daily Poll, which was the only polling service to be correct on the last election, has the national race exactly tied between Obama and McCain at 48 to 48 as of today!!!

Republicans historically do several points better than the polls predict, while at the same time, the Democrats historically perform much weaker than the polls, so get that handkerchief ready for Tuesday night!!!!!

  34. Barack Obama if elected would use his presidential power to curtail enforcement of federal immigration laws and put some 12 million illegal immigrants on a Path to Citizenship.

And that blanket amnesty will overwhelm social service programs and forever alter the political balance in the United States resulting in a Civil War?

Think CNN reported how the owner of the Miami Dolphins has announced he will sell the franchise if Obama wins because his accountants told him Obama's repressive business taxes will cost him 100's of millions in taxes, so he will sell the team before the end of the year to get his money out of the US before Obama gets his greedy hands on all of his money to spread it around to others.

  38. This presidential race is totally different from any in our history, so the polls are all full of it. Barack Obama is black and he will have what's become known as the Bradley effect to contend with.

No other US presidential race has ever had a black candidate representing one of the two major parties. This Bradley effect won't affect any votes cast by registered Republican voters, but by the registered Democratic Party ones.

For every registered Democrat voters vote that's cast for McCain because of the Bradley effect, Obama needs two votes just to stay even. This unknown factor for which none of the polls can measure with any accuracy and take into account, will play big in states like ****** ****** **** **** and quite a few others.

If these states go for McCain, it's over for Obama no matter what the polls say today.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Mr. Gene Stanley: Please get your facts right before you shoot your mouth off.

    The facts are as follows:
Senator DeFronzo did not do as the republicrat commonly known as Bozek because DeFronzo ran a democratic primary against Bozek and won.

He did not violate the rules of the democratic party has Bozek has done in the past and is currently doing again by his running against the party nominee.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I hope the Republicans are happy to have the snake in the wood pile as their senatorial candidate.

    ReplyDelete
  46. DeFronzo vs. Bozek; not a difficult choice

Former Senator Thomas Bozek is back again. Bozek is a registered Democrat, but once again is running against his own party by running on the Republican ticket as a Democrat and claiming to be a GOOD DEMOCRAT while challenging his own party’s endorsed candidate.

Bozek’s only known campaign issue seems to be that he wants to reduce the amount of funding available for section 8 housing in New Britain—a program intended to help the poor and underprivileged. During these tough economic times, who in their right mind could argue for less public assistance for our poor or underprivileged citizens?

This was the type of attitude that cost him the election the last time he ran against Senator DeFronzo.

In that election, Bozek was threatening to eliminate the city’s public housing complexes. This time he is promising to eliminate section 8 funding which allows poor people to receive a federal rent subsidy to enable them to live in private housing while their landlords receive a rental payment from the federal government.

In a recent article in The Berlin Citizen News, Bozek is even quoted as suggesting that these poor people be moved to Berlin or Farmington. He clearly feels that as Senator, he would better serve New Britain by forcing the poor out of New Britain, instead finding ways to help them.

Contrast this mean spirited attitude towards the poor, with the record of Senator Donald DeFronzo. Senator DeFronzo was a two-term mayor, probably the most popular mayor in recent memory.

Senator DeFronzo has had a record of being a champion of helping the poor during his three terms as Senator and has in the past served as the president of a statewide labor union. Even better, Senator DeFronzo is endorsed by his own party! Clearly the choice for any Democrat is a simple one—Don DeFronzo for State Senate.

It is difficult to understand how Mr. Bozek is allowed to continue as a member of the Democratic Town Committee while opposing his own party’s endorsed candidate for Senate. Isn’t it about time for Democratic Party Chairman John McNamara to address this situation? How can a town committee member be allowed to repeatedly run against his party’s endorsed candidates, and be allowed to remain on the town committee for the party he so clearly condemns?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Bozek has an issue posted on his web site that no one seems to be talking about. He promises to "USE THE DEATH PENALTY AND CREATE A REAL 'THREE STRIKES AND YOU'RE OUT' LAW."

This at least gives a strong appearance that what Bozek is promising to do is execute anyone who commits a third offense.

  49. RONALD REAGAN'S SON CALLS OBAMA A SOCIALIST!!!!!

    Obama's 'Change' Is Socialism

    Thursday, October 30, 2008 7:56 AM

    By: Michael Reagan

The other day, I went to a Hollywood luncheon crammed with producers, directors, writers, and other film industry notables.

One of them, Larry Gelbart of “MASH” fame, spoke telling the group that since capitalism has failed, why don’t we try socialism?

Try socialism? Take a sip of it and see how it tastes? It doesn’t work that way.

There’s an old saying that you can’t be half-socialist any more than you can be half-pregnant; get knocked up with a socialist fetus and you’ll have to deliver a full-born Marxist. There’s nothing in between. Try it, you’ll like it; and if you don’t, as the lads in the Gestapo used to tell people, they had ways to make them like it.

Larry Gelbart gorged himself at the capitalist table and came away with untold millions, now safely banked, and continues to collect even more millions from never-ending reruns of the “MASH” sitcom. Having made his bundle from our capitalist free-enterprise system, he seems to be telling us now that the rest of us should get in the socialist bread line and eat crumbs while he feasts on caviar.

One of the realities of this age is that the great mass of the American people haven’t traveled abroad to see how the rest of the world lives, a lot of it under dreary socialist regimes with stalled economies and no real chance for advancement for the ordinary citizen.

Moreover, our shoddy educational curriculum that has left most younger Americans so deficient in the study of history that vast numbers of them think George Washington was a Civil War general, or a lumberman who chopped down cherry trees. They have no real understanding of the economic system that allowed us to become the wealthiest and most powerful nation since the Roman Empire ruled most of the known world 2,000 years ago.

Given that mournful reality, the moment the economic Rolls Royce engine that drove this nation to the top of the hill stalls, instead of installing new spark plugs to get it going again, they go looking for an alternative mode of transportation.

In the present case, Obama and the Democrats are directing them to Larry Gelbart’s used-economic system lot where he shows them a jalopy with a fancy paint job on the outside and a one-cylinder motor inside that goes chug-chug.

Listening to the advice of a man who made his name and his money on a show about America’s military at war — yet told the same audience that our armed forces are nothing but “mercenaries” — doesn’t seem the smartest thing to do.

We are now a few days away from an election in which one of the presidential candidates is trying to sell that jalopy on Larry Gelbart’s lot and convince us that it is really a luxury limo that will get hundreds of miles to the gallon and carry us off to the promised land, where the rich will be impoverished and the middle class enriched and everybody will be deliriously happy.

Call Barack Obama’s program socialism, however, and he’ll swear on a stack of Qurans it isn’t. He calls it change. He says it’s fairness, not Marxism.

    Oh?

How does he explain the proven fact that he has been wallowing in a sty surrounded by fervent socialists and sharing in their swill for most of his life?

According to Fox’s Bill Sammon, his messiahship recalled that when he attended Occidental College in Los Angeles "to avoid being mistaken for a sellout, I chose my friends carefully," he wrote in "Dreams From My Father," his memoir. "The more politically active black students. The foreign students. The Chicanos. The Marxist professors and structural feminists." And that was his milieu for all his years in Chicago.

To anyone familiar with socialism, Obama’s programs fit comfortably within the pages of Karl Marx’s playbook, the root of which is the redistribution of the wealth, the key to the entire Obamian vault.

What’s mine is yours, and he’s the middle man.

It’s socialism lite, and it can only evolve into socialism heavy. Remember, you can’t be half-socialist, and Barack Obama knows it.

  50. MICHIGAN LAW ENFORCEMENT ISSUES STATEMENT AGAINST OBAMA!

Michigan Police Officers take on Obama.
Please pass this along to everyone that you have on your e-mail list
because this is just the beginning --- if this arrogant, egotistical,
super liberal, president wannabe gets into office....
    To all,
I have read all of the emails from Law
Enforcement & Military personnel about Barack
Obama's rudeness and what seems to be disgust for
basically anyone in uniform. Well, it's my turn to add
to the list of emailers and here it is:
So members of the Calhoun County
Sheriff's Department, Michigan State Police, (me
included) and other local agencies inside Calhoun County are
working with Secret Service in the security of Mr. Obama.
Mr. Obama's bus arrives in Battle Creek and pulls into
the stadium area. Before Mr. Obama exits the bus, he has
the Secret Service get off and tell all Law Enforcement
personnel in uniform that they now have to stand behind the
bus so Mr. Obama is not seen with anyone in a Law
Enforcement uniform before he gets off or while in the
public view. So, everyone from Michigan State Police,
Sheriff's Departments and other agencies look at each
other for a brief second, go and stand behind the bus out of
sight so Mr. Obama does not have to see, or been seen with,
what to him is 'undesirables' since he refuses to be
seen , or even acknowledge Military or Law Enforcement
personnel in uniform. And he wants to be our
    commander-in-chief!
At a time of war and terrorism in our world,
this presidential candidate who is being protected by various
branches of the military & law enforcement at the tax
payers expense, refuses to acknowledge, be seen with, have
in his photographed background, any type of Military or Law
    Enforcement in uniform.
But this is not in the headlines or in the
news or on TV. The TV news doesn't show us marching
around behind the bus. In the future, look and see if you
can see a single soldier or police officer in uniform when
you see Obama. Why? I wonder what the story or media
frenzy would be if it was Muslims, blacks, whites, Jews, or
any other race, gender, religon, and/or occupation, that Mr.
Obama refused to be seen with or have around him.
Why would I make this up? Everyone in Law
Enforcement knows we have traditionally had more funding
    under Democrats.
Just food for thought leading up to November 4th.

  53. Since everyone on here likes to quote from CNN, let's see what we can find on CNN about Obama:

OH, A PROMINENT MEMBER OF THE DNC ENDORSES MCCAIN???? could it really be that a member of his party's national committee is endorsing John McCain?

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Lynn Forester de Rothschild, a prominent Hillary Clinton supporter and member of the Democratic National Committee’s Platform Committee, will endorse John McCain for president on Wednesday, her spokesman tells CNN.

The announcement will take place at a news conference on Capitol Hill, just blocks away from the DNC headquarters. Forester will “campaign and help him through the election,” the spokesman said of her plans to help the Republican presidential nominee.

Forester was a major donor for Clinton earning her the title as a Hillraiser for helping to raise at least $100,000 for the New York Democratic senator’s failed presidential bid.

In an interview with CNN this summer, Forester did not hide her distaste for eventual Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama.

“This is a hard decision for me personally because frankly I don’t like him,” she said of Obama in an interview with CNN’s Joe Johns. “I feel like he is an elitist. I feel like he has not given me reason to trust him.”

Forester is the CEO of EL Rothschild, a holding company with businesses around the world. She is married to international banker Sir Evelyn de Rothschild. Forester is a member of the DNC’s Democrats Abroad chapter and splits her time living in London and New York.

Maybe he will be more forthcoming with information if he has to fight for his job. Wouldn't that be justice? He could find out what it is like to worry whether he will continue to have a job! I almost forgot, he doesn't care, because he has a crooked deal to guarantee himself a high paying city job in the event he ever loses an election, so the tax payers will continue to support his lame butt no matter what happens.

WVIT Channel 30 just reported a UCONN Poll that showed 50% are for the convention, 36% against, and 14% don't know.

This is just another sign that the people are fed up with government that is out of control and judges who are legislating from the bench.
You can be sure we will be voting sometime soon on gay marriage, and the voters will probably say goodbye to that forever!!!!!

Another issue that most likely to come up in the convention is a requirement to bring issues to a referendum. It is about time the people had a say in government.

So much for the idea that liberals are the majority!

  62. Ok, so how about what CBS NEWS HAS TO SAY ABOUT HIS FALSE PROMISES!

(CBS) This story was written by CBS News correspondent Wyatt Andrews.

Without question, the Barack Obama infomercial served as a very slick and powerful recitation of the biggest promises he's made as a presidential candidate. But the very bigness of his ideas is the problem: he seems blind to the concept his numbers don't add up.

Obama has already proposed a new stimulus package of $188 billion over two years. His tax cuts will cost $85 billion a year. His "army of new teachers": $18 billion. Renewable energy: $15 billion. CBS News and various independent experts estimate Obama's total first year spending could exceed $280 billion.

Still Obama repeated his claim he can find the money to pay for every proposal.

"I've offered spending cuts above and beyond their cost," he has said.

The fact is the savings Obama has identified do not cover his spending. According to a CBS News estimate, he's around $90 billion short. The Obama campaign disputes this, saying everything including the stimulus is paid for over 10 years. But other analysts say - even presuming Obama saves money in Iraq and chops the federal budget as promised - he falls short.

Let's break all of this down, starting with his highly suspect, and widely discredited, claim that he can find federal "spending cuts beyond the costs" of his promises. Very few independent economists believe he has identified the savings needed to offset his remarkable list of tax credits, tax cuts and spending pledges.

Fact: Even if you believe Obama intends to fix health care, most independent analysts say the cost is massive - $1.2 trillion over ten years, according to the highly respected Lewin Group. When the new Congress wakes up next year to a $1 trillion deficit, and answers the overwhelming new demands for another stimulus package, will the leadership really bite on a health care reform package that digs the deficit hole so much deeper?

And that's just the beginning of what Obama would spend.

Fact: The tax cuts he promises, which are mostly refundable tax credits (code for cash back), will cost $60 billion just in year one, according the National Taxpayers Union, though the Obama campaign's own estimates in July put that figure at $130 billion.

Fact: His new promise to give businesses a $3,000 tax credit for each new job created will cost $40 billion. But economists say this credit is far more likely to benefit companies already planning to expand and will likely not be enough to help companies create new jobs or forestall layoffs.

Fact: Obama's claim he will lower health care premiums by $2,500 is: 1.) guesswork, which is 2.) based on health care savings that might, in a perfect world, happen over 10 years - a fact Obama neatly glosses over.

Fact: Obama, when referring to savings he can make by leaving Iraq ($90 billion, according to Congressional Budget Office estimates), has spent these savings several times over, across several different promises depending on the crowd he's addressing.

Most of the time he spends the Iraq savings in the context of the roads he wants to build; sometimes it's for the teachers he wants to hire. Tonight, he riffed rhetorically on the savings, asking how many scholarships could be funded, or how many schools could be built. In the end though, presuming he really saves $90 billion, he can only spend it once.

Remember he also mentioned rebuilding the military ($7 billion/yr); his education initiative ($18 billion/yr); and his energy initiative ($15 billion/yr). He did not mention the $188 billion that he would spend on the brand new stimulus package he has proposed.

If he closes every loophole as promised, saves every dime from Iraq, raises taxes on the rich and trims the federal budget as he's promised to do "line by line," he still doesn't pay for his list. If he's elected, the first fact hitting his desk will be the figure projecting how much less of a budget he has to work with - thanks to the recession. He gave us a very compelling vision with his ad buy tonight. What he did not give us was any hint of the cold reality he's facing or a sense of how he might prioritize his promises if voters trust him with the White House.

Well maybe the pressure should be applied to the council majority to screw up the second job potential by replacing the Fire Chief or demoting him and appointing the original person that should have been appointed in the Chief’s position by the Mayor.

With the majority in control anything can be accomplished.

He claims he can take on communist dictators, but can't answer a few questions in a TV studio before the largest TV audience (average of 14 million viewers on any night)? 69. Since the mayor as executive officer of the city can hire personnel without council approval, why would the council have veto power over his hiring of himself. I would say it is none of their business if he wants to hire himself on his way out the door and pay himself a six figure salary to play golf. The next mayor may have the ability to fire him, but if he hires himself into one of the union positions, especially the union where he already has permanent status, then that would not be within the new mayors power to remove him because he is then a member of the very union he has shown so much contempt for. Interesting possibility.

    HERALD

Every one of 20 people in line who agreed to be interviewed by The Herald said they were planning to vote for Obama, whether they were registering as Democrats or unaffiliated.

“This is a real important election,” said CCSU defensive tackle Frank Leon. “He is looking to help the lower middle class.”

Linebacker Michael Cooke echoed his teammate’s sentiments, saying, “He’s for people like myself.”

After registering as an unaffiliated voter, Ashley Paradis, 19, said she is picking Obama for president because “I don’t like how McCain tries to dog him.”

The line started to dwindle at around 7:30 p.m., making it possible for the Republican Town Committee to hold its pre-election meeting in the fifth-floor cafeteria, which had been used throughout the day as a registration station.

RTC Chairman Paul Carver lamented the Obama furor — and quoted some of the founders’ words of wisdom about redistribution of wealth being bad for the nation. “When people realize they can vote themselves goodies from the treasury, that is the end of democracy,” he said.

In New Britain, the ranks of Democrats has swelled by more than 1,500 since January. At that point, Democratic Town Committee Chairman John McNamara had said he hoped the numbers of Democrats would grow to 16,000.

“We got at least 500 today,” said assistant Democratic Registrar of Voters Karen Stumskas, as she held up a six-inch-thick stack of registration forms at around 7 p.m.

“It’s been coming in so fast you don’t have time to look,” she said, when asked how many were Democrats and how many were Republicans and unaffiliated.

“After tonight, we will have easily 18,000,” she predicted.

Meanwhile, the count on the computer from an hour earlier had Democrats numbered at 17,819 — 1,800 more than the DTC’s target.

Unaffiliated voters numbered 11,491 and Republican ranks were 3,679.

“The city has picked up 4,000 voters since January,” Dzwonkowski said.

  82. Since everyone on here wants to hear from NBC News, here is a breaking NBC story:

Chris Dodd Under Investigation for Sweetheart Mortgage Deal

NBC news reports that the Justice Department has begun an investigation into whether Countrywide Financial Corp used the 'Friends of Angelo (Mozilo)' program to buy influence with Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT), Kent Conrad (D-ND), and others. According to a senior Countrywide official who handled its VIP program, there was no way Dodd and Conrad could not have known they were getting a special deal:

...Feinberg says part of his job was to hammer home to the V.I.P. clients that they were getting special deals.

"You spoke in a manner that was different than you spoke with a regular customer," said Feinberg. "'Your loan has been specially priced by Angelo.' 'You're getting special discounts because you're in the V.I.P. loan department."

So what would a "Friend of Angelo" get that an average customer would not? According to Feinberg, the possible benefits ran the gamut.

"They got a discount on the interest rate," said Feinberg. "They got discounts on their fees. They got a free floatdown option before closing..."

"There were many, many taglines we used to let them know their level of importance to make sure that they understand where they're located," said Feinberg. "And nine times out of ten, once you mention 'V.I.P' the person's gonna ask you 'what am i getting for being in this V.I.P department?' Or 'what am I getting because I know Angelo?' Or 'I talked to Angelo and he said I'm getting this...'"

Feinberg says he's not aware of any discounts linked to favors, but he did see e-mails noting the potential value of the relationships to Countrywide's political and business interests. The e-mails noted one particular client was "of importance to Countrywide." Another encouraged a discount, noting "they are incredibly important to us." Yet another asked that the loan officer, "make an exception" in Countrywide's lending rules, "due to the fact that the borrower is a Senator."

If Dodd and Conrad somehow missed the special treatment they were receiving, Feinberg's testimony suggests that it was only because they chose not to listen. Nevertheless, Dodd is still refusing to release the paperwork related to his loans--information he promised to share weeks ago.

  88. OBAMA IS INDOCTRINATING OUR CHILDREN ON SOCIALISM!!!!!

    VOIGHT: My concerns for America
Obama sowing socialist seeds in young people

    Monday, July 28, 2008

    Actor Jon Voight. Associated Press.

    OP-ED

We, as parents, are well aware of the importance of our teachers who teach and program our children. We also know how important it is for our children to play with good-thinking children growing up.

Sen. Barack Obama has grown up with the teaching of very angry, militant white and black people: the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Louis Farrakhan, William Ayers and Rev. Michael Pfleger. We cannot say we are not affected by teachers who are militant and angry. We know too well that we become like them, and Mr. Obama will run this country in their mindset.

The Democratic Party, in its quest for power, has managed a propaganda campaign with subliminal messages, creating a God-like figure in a man who falls short in every way. It seems to me that if Mr. Obama wins the presidential election, then Messrs. Farrakhan, Wright, Ayers and Pfleger will gain power for their need to demoralize this country and help create a socialist America.

The Democrats have targeted young people, knowing how easy it is to bring forth whatever is needed to program their minds. I know this process well. I was caught up in the hysteria during the Vietnam era, which was brought about through Marxist propaganda underlying the so-called peace movement. The radicals of that era were successful in giving the communists power to bring forth the killing fields and slaughter 2.5 million people in Cambodia and South Vietnam. Did they stop the war, or did they bring the war to those innocent people? In the end, they turned their backs on all the horror and suffering they helped create and walked away.

Those same leaders who were in the streets in the '60s are very powerful today in their work to bring down the Iraq war and to attack our president, and they have found their way into our schools. William Ayers is a good example of that.

Thank God, today, we have a strong generation of young soldiers who know exactly who they are and what they must do to protect our freedom and our democracy. And we have the leadership of Gen. David Petraeus, who has brought hope and stability to Iraq and prevented the terrorists from establishing a base in that country. Our soldiers are lifting us to an example of patriotism at a time when we've almost forgotten who we are and what is at stake.

If Mr. Obama had his way, he would have pulled our troops from Iraq years ago and initiated an unprecedented bloodbath, turning over that country to the barbarianism of our enemies. With what he has openly stated about his plans for our military, and his lack of understanding about the true nature of our enemies, there's not a cell in my body that can accept the idea that Mr. Obama can keep us safe from the terrorists around the world, and from Iran, which is making great strides toward getting the atomic bomb. And while a misleading portrait of Mr. Obama is being perpetrated by a media controlled by the Democrats, the Obama camp has sent out people to attack the greatness of Sen. John McCain, whose suffering and courage in a Hanoi prison camp is an American legend.

Gen. Wesley Clark, who himself has shame upon him, having been relieved of his command, has done their bidding and become a lying fool in his need to demean a fellow soldier and a true hero.

This is a perilous time, and more than ever, the world needs a united and strong America. If, God forbid, we live to see Mr. Obama president, we will live through a socialist era that America has not seen before, and our country will be weakened in every way.

  91. The Big Empty

As the only reporter during this election who has actually visited upwards of 50 of John McCain's field offices around the country (13 battleground states and counting), this piece by Matthew Mosk at the Washington Post comes as no surprise:

The decision to finance a final advertising push is forcing McCain to curtail spending on Election Day ground forces to help usher his supporters to the polls, according to Republican consultants familiar with McCain's strategy.

The vaunted, 72-hour plan that President Bush used to mobilize voters in 2000 and 2004 has been scaled back for McCain. He has spent half as much as Obama on staffing and has opened far fewer field offices. This week, a number of veteran GOP operatives who orchestrate door-to-door efforts to get voters to the polls were told they should not expect to receive plane tickets, rental cars or hotel rooms from the campaign.

"The desire for parity on television comes at the expense of investment in paid boots on the ground," said one top Republican strategist who has been privy to McCain's plans. "The folks who will oversee the volunteer operation have been told to get out into the field on their own nickel."

Obama even went further to explain that when they take that money from the rich, and give it to someone less fortunate who can then spend it, it will allow that person to buy new cars, buy more products, and will drive the economy by allowing these people to buy the products that these businesses are selling.

So, get ready to buy that car for someone less fortunate than you, or be called SELFISH!

  94. Hi Everyone,

Here is some food for thought before the Election on Tuesday:

Have you ever heard news stories of people who create a problem so they can be the Hero to Fix it? A good example of this (or should I say more recognizable example) is the occasional firefighter who lights minor fires (dumpster, grass or trash fires) so that he/she can be the first on the scene to put it out and be the hero. Sometimes that desire to be the "Hero" grows stronger and stronger putting him/her in a position to escalate the illegal and dangerous activity by lighting larger fires so they can get on TV and such. Eventually that person gets caught and the effects it has on his/her department is drastic as well as affecting other people's lives and livelihoods.

Isn't it funny that 2 yrs ago (Nov 2006), the Democrats regained full control of both the US House and US Senate and one of the many promises that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made was that they (the new Democrat Majority) would bring down the already high price of fuel and gas prices (they were at $2.29 per gallon at that time nationwide average). After that point, Pelosi and gang not only failed to reduce gas and fuel prices , but the prices rose steadily to an all time high back in the spring of this year and held at that point for a few months till mid July, where they rapidly started to drop over the past few months till now. The fuel prices are now back to just about the same price as they were 2 yrs ago and how convenient just before election day.

Couple this Government created problem of Energy Dependence on Foreign oil with another failure of the stock markets and mortgage industry in the past few months just before an election (a problem that John McCain and other Republicans warned Congress about over 2 yrs ago) and it sounds just like that volunteer firefighter. The Democrats think they are the only ones capable of fixing the problem and are convincing many Americans to vote for them even though they are the ones who caused the problem in the first place. Connecticut's own Senior Senator was caught with his hand in the Fannie Mae cookie jar, and he comes across acting like he did nothing wrong, and yes Senator Obama is also neck deep in that one.

I believe it was Ronald Reagan who said "Government is not the solution to our problems, they ARE the problem!" (forgive me if I'm wrong)

"Joe the Plumber" has gotten a lot of press lately and is now a celebrity. All he did was ask a simple question to Senator Obama about taxes and punishing people who are successful in business. It's not what Joe asked that made him famous, it's Barack Obama's response that made Joe famous for asking the question that forced Obama to show his true self. Obama's answer was that he felt that the wealth that the achievers have earned in this country needs to be spread around so that other people can have the opportunity that they have.

Well as a business owner who just happens to be the third generation owner of our family's plumbing business, I was taken back by that "spread the wealth" comment just like so many other business owners across the country. This is why Joe the plumber is a celebrity because so many people can relate to his concerns about Barack Obama's tax plan. This tax plan amounts to nothing more than the traditional Socialism/Marxism concept of wealth re-distribution (ya know "From each according to his abilities too each according to his needs" Karl Marx) With Obama's socialist tax plan and his running mate Joe Biden telling americans that it's Patriotic to pay higher taxes, this is simply UN-American and needs to be stopped now.

Obama keeps telling us that he wants to build this economy from the ground up, because a Trickle Down Economy doesn't work. From the ground up?! Could that possibly mean that this grounding of the economy was intentional? I would bet it was.

Ronald Reagan taught us that everything trickles down, including punishment via taxation through loss of jobs, wages, economic growth, etc. Remember, corporations don't pay taxes, they just pass it on down the line which ends up right in our middle class laps. (The very people Obama claims to want to lift up) Wealth can also trickle down through the system by cutting taxes on everyone unless government gets in the way by out of control spending.

Based on the importance of the economy, there is a clear choice for president because our economy has to be the number 1 issue among many: McCain is proposing cutting taxes on ALL americans and cutting government spending which are the two things needed to stimulate an economy (like during the Reagan Years) and Obama's tax plan is all about punishing the very people who create wealth and jobs in this country and that punishment will "trickle down" to EVERYONE.

I will close with the motto on the side of my trucks: "Freedom is NOT Free!"

    Thanks for reading,

    Mike

Suppose that Barack Obama were to concede Pennsylvania's electoral votes. Literally, concede them. Throw 'em back, like a Chase Utley home run at a Cubs' game. How often would he still win the election?

89.0% of the time, according to our most recent run of simulation, along with another 2.4% of outcomes that ended in ties. This is because in the vast majority of our simulations, Obama was either:

    a) winning at least 291 electoral votes, meaning that he could drop Pennsylvania's 21 and still be over 270, and/or
    b) winning at least 270 electoral votes, while already projected to lose Pennsylvania in that simulation run.

  97. That's a funny one! An internal Obama campaign memo was just realeased reporting that his own internal polling has him currently LOSING to McCain in:
PA, NV, IA, NC, NM, MT, FL, IN, ND, and NH. Based on his own campaign numbers, he can't win unless he brings several of these states, just one of them being PA, back to his win column.

That is why he is running around the country like a chicken with its head cut off trying to get a few last minute votes in these crucial states, but so far it isn't working. This is why his entire campaign is in panic mode.

Everything is against the Democrats at this moment. Historically the public begins to pay close attention as the election draws near, and they begin to question how much more in taxes the liberal is going to take from them in taxes. In this case we have the most extreme liberal ever to seek that office, so it should only make sense that this process will be even more intense than it has been in previous elections.

Obama himself just said that if he doesn't make it this time, he will be back to try it again in 4 years with what he called a second act, so even he is beginning to accept defeat!!!!!!

  109. I like how Bozek promised to execute anyone who commits a 3rd offense. His exact promise was that he would use the death penalty to give us a 3 strikes law that really works.

  110. I helped former senator Tom Bozek with his two campaigns against former senator Joseph Harper but once Tom won the second election against Harper a dramatic change occurred, in such a manner that he wouldn’t listen to anyone in the three Towns he was to represent or in the legislature.

It is my belief that the power went to his head and he believed that no one could beat him at his game.

Today’s New Britain Herald Editorial said it best by saying Bozek is a candidate for the few by his blaming the minorities and the poor for the problems of New Britain. He decries to get rid of all the minorities and claims that section eight is a cancer.

He doesn’t realize that many of our seniors are on the section eight rental subsidy in order to survive.

I am amazed that the Republican Party would endorse this extreme racial individual as their senatorial candidate when his philosophy is no where near that of our Mayor’s, Timothy Stewart.

Again I repeat; that the Herald’s did say it best about Mr. Bozek “that he is a candidate for the few, not for the many.”

  115. Twas The Night Before The Elections

    'Twas the night before elections
    And all through the town
    Tempers were flaring
    Emotions all up and down!

    I, in my bathrobe
With a cat in my lap
    Had cut off the TV
    Tired of political crap.

    When all of a sudden
    There arose such a noise
I peered out of my window
    Saw Obama and his boys

They had come for my wallet
    They wanted my pay
    To give to the others
Who had not worked a day!

    He snatched up my money
    And quick as a wink
    Jumped back on his bandwagon
As I gagged from the stink

    He then rallied his henchmen
    Who were pulling his cart
I could tell they were out
    To tear my country apart!

    ' On Fannie, on Freddie,
    On Biden and Ayers!
    On Acorn, On Pelosi'
    He screamed at the pairs!

They took off for his cause
And as he flew out of sight
I heard him laugh at the nation
Who wouldn't stand up and fight!

So I leave you to think
    On this one final note-

    IF YOU DONT WANT SOCIALISM
    GET OUT AND VOTE!!!!

  116. The Mayor obviously has no intention of being forthcoming with the information on how much he has been spending fighting, and losing I might add, all these grievances against the fire fighters. Since he doesn't want to participate in open government, why don't we get a small group together an utilize Alderman Sherwood's new ordinance and FOI the records involving these cases. Not that we are seeking the specific details of the cases, but the state Freedom of Information Commission has already held that grievance proceedings are a matter of public record and subject to public disclosure. All we are seeking is the cost of fighting each case, so why not make it easy on yourself Mr. Mayor, and just tell us?

    ReplyDelete
  117. Mr. Smith, do not assume that the entire Republican Town Committee endorsed Tom Bozek. It was not brought up at the general meeting for the entire Town Committee to vote on. If it were, I doubt if the outcome would be in Tom Bozek's favor. Perhaps if you contact Paul Carver and ask him exactly how the endorsement came about, he'll be able to tell you.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Is that even legal? Doesn't the committee have to vote on such an endorsement? Sounds like someone should contact the state elections enforcement commission:
    Phone: (860-256-2940, or
    e-mail: seec@ct.gov

Perhaps Mr. Carver should do his explaining to them?

    ReplyDelete
  119. God like Trueworhty ignores the Republican submittal to fill the vacant seat on the board of Education.

I agree with the Mayor calling this move as political “payback.”

Paul Carver, on the other hand, termed it a payback for blocking former Alderman Rick Lopes’ reappointment to the city council.

I also agree With Mr. Carver with his questioning the corrupt power affect that permeates from the Majority leader since it is the republican’s task to name the replacement under the City Charter guidelines and not that of the self appointed overbearing approach of the majority leader of the city council.

Wednesday’s Council meeting indeed will be politically entertaining.

Mr. Rich Marzi the President of the north end Revitalization Zone cited that the HUD money slated for his group is frozen pending a conflict of interest is currently under investigation.

Mr. Marzi comments were alluding to Salvio’s whistle blowing causing the investigation by HUD with their finding that three current Alderman had a conflict of interest with their association with the HRA and they were Michael Trueworthy, Paul Cantanzaro who is also President of the HRA organization, and Tonilynn Collins which caused the removal of HUD funds from the city a sum of approximate $264,000.

This effected eight city agencies according to inform sources and one of the agencies concerned, that is running out of money, are the food panties throughout our city and also money for heating for the poor as well winter clothing.

Thanks to the whistle blower Salvio this will be a very cold winter for many of our poor citizens With HUD still refusing to return the money to the city in order to help our needy this winter.

The common council faced a large public turnout last night for two
    contested issues. The first issue
was Public Bid No. 3446. Leasing of
Restaurant Operations at Stanley Golf Course. The Parks and Rec commission put the lease for the restaurant operations at the golf course out for public bid this year
in preparation for the 2009 season.
The current leasee, Zabbara's restaurant has operated the facility for 23+ years.

Friends, family and patrons of Zabbaras came out in support of
    Zabbaras remaining at the course
    after Jordon's Catering was named
the winning bidder essentially ending the current reign as of 12/30/08. The item just needed a yes/no vote by the common council. A question and answer dialogue was opened up by a few council members as to the "upscale atmosphere" that Jordans might introduce, their commitment to adhering to golf course hours for food and whether or not their plan for a full scale restaurant and banquet
operations would conflict with your average golfer being able to get affordable food in a comfortable atmosphere as they have been for 23 years. The bid process was confirmed to have been professional, methodical and complete. The decision was made based on the the best candidate which included capitol mprovements to the facility such as new carpeting, much needed kitchen equipment, new furnishings, bathrooms etc. The winning bidder, Jordans, committed 190,000 dollars for those improvements and an additional 100,000 in advertising for the restaurant and the golf course. The current leasee in their bid "suggested" capitol improvements of 67,000 with the stipulation that "cash flow be permitting?" This indicated to me that maybe the current owners were feeling a cash flow crunch and know the facility needs improvments and might not be able to follow through? A representative from Jordans took questions and reiterated the companies committment to this new venture and to the city of New Britain. A few of the council members seemed to put their "emotions" before making this business decision for the city explaining it by saying that our current economy is not the time to make changes! They cited the closing of Famous Daves this past year and essentially inferred that they do not have confidence in a nice restaurant making it in NB! The vote was NO for the winning bidder! The item could not be tabled for review at a later time so this public bid was essentially canned. There goes almost 300,000 dollars from a private investor into our city landmark! Taxpayers will not be happy if the Parks & Rec department needs to request money to repair and maintain the club. At this point we have a contract with the current restaurant which ends in a few weeks. Looking to enter the bid process in New Britain "stay away" it's a waste of
your time and money. I hope Jordan's Catering doesn't need to recover any costs associated with being named the winning bidder of this public invitation to do business.

Mr. Trueworthy mentioned that he is not much of a golfer and he stated maybe he is not much of a business man either but he couldn't
see changing what has worked for 23
years. He was again accused of making a political decision I guess against the mayor who is a golfer! Ms. Bielinski seemed to have her heart on her sleeve for the ladies who run the current establishment and their local vendors. Mr. Sherwood cited that start-up restaurants are not making it in this economy (he had read this). One other councilman didn't want to get a 10 cent hotdog from Jordans. That was my take from the audience. I was under the assumption that democrats are supporting "change" this year but I guess not locally.

The other issue at hand was the BOE
republican seat and appt of Leslie Jacobs or Mr. Giantonio. I could not stay to see the outcome of that issue waiting for the announcement today.

  122. During The common council meeting of the twelfth the Majority Leader Michael Trueworhty along with his aid, Alderman Phil Sherwood, has chosen to ignore the well chosen words, regarding the appointment to the board of Education vacancy, by many concerned parents, three board members or former board members and a current Vice Chairman of the New Britain Housing Authority.

It is truly sad that the school children of New Britain were ping ponged by the political leaders who should be there to protect them.

The Democratic Aldermen and Alderwomen should be ashamed of their ignoring actions against accepting an individual submitted by the Republican Town Committee, who holds a degree in education for an individual, whose past performance on the very same board of education was less than adequate, as indicated by the aforementioned speakers.

The past tradition was always to accept the wishes of the Town Committee’s recommendation for filling the existing vacancy.
I guess the selection was for one who will provide the yes vote for the leadership without any concerns of the needs of the children.

Loyalty to the leadership is more important then selecting a person who will protect the interest of the children and will not turn the Board of Education in to a political identity.

    Frank,

And, let it be known, that some of my best stories came from tips you passed along to me. So you don't know how exciting it is to see your blog. You know this city cold; I think your blog is going to be very, very popular.

  124. Mayor Stewart:

I was delighted to hear of your plans to veto the council’s recent appointment of Leslie Jacobs to the Board of Education and I commend you for your plan to do the right thing for the children of this city.

The Republican Party worked hard to find a suitable appointee for this vacancy and they found what they believed was the right person in Jamie Giantonio. Mr. Giantonio has a background in teaching and is the parent of two young children, so he has a vested interest in the well being of our educational system.

Filling of this vacancy, being a Republican seat on the Board, should be left up to the leadership of the Republican Party, free from interference of Democratic Aldermen who appear to have other interests besides the welfare of the children in mind.

The public and more specifically, the parents, agree. I have heard from a number of parents who are simply outraged over this entire process. A long line of public members, mostly parents, spoke against this appointment at the council meeting last Wednesday, but the council simply chose to ignore them. I urge you to listen to the people of this city and do what is right for our children.

VETO THE APPOINTMENT OF LESLIE JACOBS!

  125. State Representative Tim O’Brien should be commended for his spearheading the legislative efforts to save the New Britain Herald and The Bristol Press together with his legislative colleagues.

The Press Staff Steve Collins and Adam Benson have reported today that the state commissioner of the state Department of Economic and Community Development Ms. Joan McDonald stated there could be serious discussions under way for the two dailies.

Continuing by noting we are going to aggressively outreach to see if there are other potential buyers.

Both New Britain and Bristol fervently need a source of local news and unfortunately another paper published nearby has neglected the reporting of New Britain’s local news effectively.

Tim’s legislative colleagues deserve the recognition of their efforts with this matteras well.

  126. To the anonymous individuals that are concern with the Mayor’s veto letter not being in the council's agenda.

Since I have printed a re-print of the letter in its entirety it would seem very difficult for the Majority Leader of the Council to remain oblique on this important issue.

Could he be planning to dump Jacobs by writing in a substitute name for the replacement?

It is a thought to ponder with.

  127. The Autocratic Alderman Paul Catanzaro:

Some four years ago I wrote an article in our local newspapers describing of the mere fact that you as a city employee coupled with your being an elected city Alderman placed you in a conflict of interest at either location until such time you resign from one or the other.

You ignored the warning with your complacent attitude.

And then a few years back you proposed a resolution at a council meeting calling for the elimination of all city undertakers from being able to serve on the cemetery commission and when it was time to vote on your proposal you were cautioned by the Minority Leader of the council that your vote would place you in a conflict of interest since your boss at the city’s park department, where you work, also serves as the Chairperson of the cemetery Commission. With your complacent attitude you acted as though you are above the law and went ahead by voting for your motion. I again wrote an article admonishing your actions in the local newspapers with your continued disdain of your being within the dictates of law.

Paul, it is amazing that it took all this time for these facts to surface and with the additional complaint filed with HUD about your HRA involvement along with two of your other Democratic Alderman who are in conflict as much as you are and are being dragged through the mud and slime of politics because of your insistence that you can do no wrong.

With the aforementioned facts I cannot agree more with the HUD edict that all three of you, should resign from the council due to your conflict of interest and that mandate includes you, Alderwoman Tonilynn Collins, and the council Majority leader Alderman Michael Trueworthy. Furthermore; It would be much wiser for all three to not attend any future council meetings until such time all the legal conflict issues have been resolved with the HUD Agency.

The saddest part is watching you tear down the democratic ideology through your extreme desire to show the electorate that you have the power and God help anyone who might come between you and your thirst for power.

  128. +I rceived this for Posting:

When elected to serve the city in any capacity, those elected must take an oath to serve the City and its citizens according to the provisions in the City Charter and the city’s ordinances. It is also understood that as citizens of the state and our country we must all abide by State and Federal statutes and the U.S. CONSTITUTION. Anyone who needs more than this information about how to behave as an honest member of society should not run for office. Surely, there are times when for whatever reasons people make judgment errors. No amount of special rules written anywhere can erase human errors.

That being said, while I applaud the effort by the “Freshman members...” of the Common Council to erase conflict of interest situations involving city officials from occurring, I believe that adding a whole new set of regulations to city ordinances regarding conflicts of interest is unnecessary especially when these regulations may be redundant with the city’s own regulations and State Statutes.

Since Mayor Stewart was first elected in 2003, Council Democrats have attempted to copy state government structure and regulations into our city ordinances. Efforts to mirror state legislature committee structure, FOI regulations, etc., have largely failed. Why, some are in conflict with our City Charter, some are not compatible with out city government structure or, as already pointed out, are redundant. Most of these actions taken by the Democratic Council Majority are attempts that have been made to usurp Mayoral prerogatives or to micromanage departments, boards, commissions or committees. Many times, important city business has been delayed or obstructed with debilitating results to the City and its residents. Recent examples, all involving conflicts of interest of some kind are: The Stanley Golf Course food service fiasco, the BOE replacement for Mrs. Kraczkowsky and the landscaping contract for the Badolato Garage.

Perhaps two thirds of Council members have conflicts of interest in their duties as elected city officials arising out of: personal, financial, and/or familial relationships. They are aware of these potential conflicts and the consequences for ignoring them. There is no need for a “fresh set of eyes.” Of the violations of laws and conflicts of interest that have been reported over the past five and one half years, “old eyes” have exposed them.

I remind our “freshman” Council members of an old saying, “ be careful what you wish for, you may get it.” Also, be careful that what what you hope to accomplish now doesn’t come back to bite you in the derriere.

  129. Subject: The Saga of Court Hearings on Municipal Code of Ethics....?

The Government Elections and Administration Committee took a step forward toward eradicating political corruption at the municipal level when it approved a bill that would force all Cities and Towns (like New Britain)to adopt a code of ethics by 2007.

The substitute bill calls for municipalities to establish procedures to investigate allegations of misconduct by its public officials, public employees, and paid consultants.
The state has yet to pass its own contract reform package. The General Assembly has passed legislation toward that end three times, but Governor M. Jodi Rell vetoed all three attempts. State Rep. Christopher Caruso, [D-Bridgeport], said that municipalities, like the state, routinely award multi-million dollar contracts and in most towns there is no process for the public to address the behavior of public officials.

Two Glastonbury residents, Karen Emerick and Dana Evans, know what Rep. Caruso means all too well. They were in Hartford Superior Court filing writs of mandamus to enforce their legal rights. Since 2003, Emerick and Evans have been asking the Glastonbury Ethics Commission to specify how the public may initiate complaints alleging a violation of code, or how the public might request access to the commission's advisory opinions.

They say they have yet to receive an answer, though Karen Emerick says she was told on one occasion, in letter from the ethics commission chairperson, that the commission would not accept complaints directly from the public. Evans said she had wanted information on a code that would allow public officials to represent a developer and others doing business in the town, but was told advisory opinions are not for the public. If it becomes law, the substitute bill approved by the committee today will change that.

After filing and winning numerous state Freedom of Information Commission complaints and non-compliance actions against the Glastonbury Ethics Commission, Emerick and Evans said they felt they had exhausted all other avenues.

After filing the writ, Emerick said there should be a regional ethics commission, so that people on the commission do not hear cases from residents in their own town. She said she would support a statewide ethics code that doesn’t require public officials to disclose the contents of their bank accounts, but they would have to disclose all financial interests in property and list the names of their limited liability companies and private employers.

The substitute House bill that the committee approved prohibits public officials and public employees from representing private interests against the interests of their employer municipality, and closes the loophole in the revolving door policy so public officials can't take jobs with private companies that do business with the town.

Before it can become law, the bill still must be approved by the House, the Senate, and Governor Rell. Susan G. Kniep, former East Hartford mayor and President of The Federation of Connecticut Taxpayers Organization (FCTO) said that every time a public official writes a local ethics code for a town so that in the future he may, as an elected or former official, do business with the town - then the taxpayer again loses his/her shirt.

Without strong ethics laws on a local level, common sense tells you that local elected officials cannot and will not police their own, said Susan Kniep, President FCTO.
