Great efforts of our state legislature members must be congratulated for their fervent endless efforts in saving the Bristol Press and the New Britain Herald and were able also save three weeklies as well.
Our New Britain and Bristol Mayors should be congratulated for their endless efforts in negotiating the interest for the buyer to consider this endeavor.
Hopefully Mr. Shroeder will take a long hard look at the one sided ultra-liberal reporting style that has been in play here at the New Britain Herald for some time.
For example, does anyone doubt for one minute that if someone like Mayor Stewart, Republican Party Leader Paul Carver, or Alderman Lew Salvio, or any other prominent Republican in town were to be arrested for even the most minor traffic violation (even if the incident occurred on the moon), that that news would not be the headlines in the New Britain Herald for that day with follow-up after follow-up story? If you agree that would be the case, then ask yourself why that very same paper would decline to report the multiple arrests of one of their own prominent figures?
Could there be some truth to the many public claims that a small lunatic fringe on the city council controls every word that the Herald prints in this town?
I believe that the demise of the Herald has been in part caused by the readers rejecting this paper because they have grown tired of the liberal propaganda reporting that is proving to be so devastating to so many left wing newspapers. If Mr. Schroeder wants to return this newspaper to profitablility, he might look into ways to bring back some fairness in his reporting so that he can once again earn the trust of the public. I remember a day when you could count on a story being true because that is what it said in the paper. Many of you are probably not old enough to remember the good old days. A day when newspapers worked so hard to prove their fairness, that they were even tougher on themselves. They used to call that "JOURNALISM."
The Collapse of the Left-Wing Press By Bill O'Reilly for BillOReilly.com Thursday, January 22, 2009 There is much irony in the fact that while liberals have won power in Washington big time, the left-wing media is collapsing all over the place. In the past couple of weeks, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the Minneapolis Star Tribune and the mother of all liberal publications, the New York Times, all have issued SOS announcements.
The Seattle paper will cease publication in March unless a buyer is found. Even though it can't pay its bills, the Post-Intelligencer should get into the left wing hall of fame after its publisher told the FBI to buzz off when the agency asked for media help in locating two possible terror suspects.
The Minneapolis paper, called the "Red Star" by some in Minnesota, has filed for bankruptcy after its earnings dropped more than 50% in one year. That, despite the Presidential vote and a vicious election between Senator Norm Coleman and Al Franken.
As for the New York Times, it is Twilight Zone time. The paper is already trying to use equity from its Manhattan office building to pay debts and now has borrowed $250 million from Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim Helu. And get this—the Times is paying old Carlos an astounding 14% interest rate! What, was Tony Soprano not available? Does the description "loan shark" mean anything to the ideologues running the Times? I mean, the prime lending rate in America is 3.25%, and these guys are paying Carlos Slim 14%! Wow.
On the TV front, the über-liberal, Bush-hating MSNBC network ranked #31 in total day ratings for the first two weeks of January. I think that's right behind the "Roller Derby Channel." General Electric, which owns NBC, has taken a sharp turn to the left in its corporate philosophy, while at the same time it watched its stock price decline from about 50 dollars a share to around $13. The fact that CEO Jeffrey Immelt still has his job ranks up there with the miracle of the US Airways water landing.
So, why is the liberal media taking a pounding when the left now controls Congress and the Oval Office? It may be because of the economy. After the recession blindsided the folks last fall, anger filled the air. Why weren't we warned that the finance industry was awash in bad housing loans? President Bush and Senator John McCain had no answer. So the folks voted for the Democrats.
But that doesn't mean that the American people suddenly became liberals over night. In fact, some folks became even more conservative with their spending and lifestyles. The images of left-wing media people gloating over the failure of the Bush administration did not cheer many people up. In fact, I believe it teed a lot them off.
Despite the power shift in Washington, America remains a traditional country that largely rejects big government and radical social change. The former hippies running the crazy left media will never get that. They think most Americans want gay marriage, political correctness and unfettered abortion. They think everyday folks think ponytails and pierced ears on old guys are cool.
Well, these Abbie Hoffman wannabes are sadly out of touch... and, soon, may be out of work.
A portion of Steve 0ollins'comment, a Staff Reporter of the Bristol Press, regarding the sale of the Press.
"Against all odds, it wasn't closed, as the experts said was inevitable.
Thanks to Schroeder, the paper was instead sold and now belongs not to a dying newspaper chain but instead to an energetic newsman with an infectious optimism about what's possible here."
Yes Steve, I wish you and your paper a continued success.
As you may know I read your column every day and will continue to do so from New Britain, Ct. where your sister paper, The Herald, needs a complete revamping.

...President Barack Obama is on a collision course with his critics after picking a fight with Rush Limbaugh, America's most influential conservative commentator.
President Obama has told public to stop listening to the right-wing talk show radio host Rush Limbaugh, with the launching of president's new culture war with conservative voters.
Mr.Barack Obama told public to break free of the confrontational mindset epitomised by Mr. Limbaugh, the highest paid talk show host in America. "You can't just listen to Rush Limbaugh and get things done in Wshington," Mr. Obama said.
The presidents comments followed a blunt attack on him by Rush Limbaugh, who declared on air that he hoped Mr Obama would fail as president because otherwise it will usher in an era of socialism into the American economy.
Thanks to Schroeder, the paper was instead sold and now belongs not to a dying newspaper chain but instead to an energetic newsman with an infectious optimism about what's possible here." *********************************** The reason Schroeder is so successful is that his history is with a chain of conservative newspapers. If he were from a liberal paper, he would most likely be scratching to pay the bills just like the New York Times who is borrowing from Mexico at a 14% interest rate just to pay the utility bills!
The majority of Americans are center right and will reject socialism in this country. Despite the efforts of the Democrats to kill it forever, Free Enterprise and Capitalism will prevail in the end, whether Phil Sherwood likes it or not!
Communists like Phil Sherwood will soon fall out of power as the majority grows tired of their giving away the store at the expense of the dwindling number of people who work, and pay taxes to foot the bill for such communist programs like "tax refunds" for people who never worked or paid a dime in taxes in their lives.
People like Sherwood and Trueworthy run around condemning those "greedy Republicans" but without hard working Republicans to pay all those repressive taxes, whose money would they have to give away?
I could not believe Guiness did not quote ONE Ethics Commissioner in the story.
I wouldn't believe what Rick Guiness reported about the commission, even if he did write something, because he would put Sherwack's spin on it. I stopped reading the New Britian Herald a long time ago, because with Rick Guinness controlling the news for New Britain, it has become nothing more than the propaganda ministry for Phony Phil Sherwack.
Bill O'Reilly and Shawn Haniity constantly report on how journalism is dead in America. One thing is certain, with Sherwack's mouthpiece Rick Guinness at the helm of the New Britain beat, journalism died a long time ago in New Britain.
Mr.Barack Obama told public to break free of the confrontational mindset epitomised by Mr. Limbaugh:
Maybe the President is jealous because Rush Limbaugh makes so much more than he does? The liberals claim no one listens to Rush, but somebody must be listening as he recently signed an $880 million contract with Clear Channel Communications.
Think the New York Times, NBC, CNN or any other left wing lunatic news outlet has the financing available to pay one commentator that much money?
