  1. The American public is showing virtually no confidence in the economic measures that have been implemented or advocated by the 2009 Obama administration.

The Washington Post newspaper reminded the American public why that is so: that the "Stimulus" Bill had little to do with the economy, and a great deal to do with Democratic Party politics on the national, state and local level.

And here in CT those Democrats in those cities and towns got their free tickets to ride on the "Stimulus" gravy train while NB Chairman DTC John McNamara overseers from liberal McNamara Plantation are kicked off the "Stimulus" gravy train – no ticket – no ride - no Stimulus money!

  2. SEBAC (state employees bargaining agent coalition) has issued numerous statements to the Governor insisting on working with her to find ways that the unions can be part of the solution for balancing the budget through furlough days and wage concessions.

The East Hartford Fire Union recently signed an agreement which waives any overtime payments for the next year.

What are the New Britain unions doing? Along with the Board of Education employees, instead of offering solutions, they are demanding huge pay increases. Demands for MORE, MORE, MORE. Like Coach Jim Calhoun, who when asked if he would make any concessions from his $1.6 million state salary, he replied "Not a Dime," in my opinion these public employees are nothing but greedy pigs.

It is time for Mayor Stewart to follow the lessons of Governor's Weicker and Rowland. Keep laying them off until the unions are begging you to take big wage concessions to get their members back to work. The more of them you layoff, the more desperate their unions will become to give you back wages and other concessions, so let the layoffs fly and give these greedy pigs a dose of the reality the rest of us have to deal with!

  4. Everyone needs to cut Obama some slack. Remember, this is the FIRST TIME he has ever put a budget together.

He never did any budgeting as a community organizer, his 143 days in the US Senate didn't prepare him for this, and all he did as an Illinois State Senator was vote present and promised those botanical gardens in state of Illinois that never got built.

Obama's the most inexperienced person to ever be president, and he'll need 10 years or so on the job to learn.

  5. In Massachusetts we have the option to pay 5.8% instead of 5.3% for our state income tax rate.

In the 2nd most liberal state in the union, how many people do you think volunteered to pay the higher rate out of the 660,000 returns so far this year? any guesses?

Thats right.....299 WOW, they want higher taxes, just not their own.

  12. People would pay their taxes if the taxes, fines and fees were reasonable. These cities don't control costs; they waste money; they have rich benefits for their employees and they have too many employees. They don't make cuts when they should and they hand the taxpayer the bill for it all. What they should do is throw the leaders of these cities in jail. They're robbing us and won't be satisfied until we're all in the poor house. This jackboot approach may help them wring the bucks out of every poor schlub struggling to make it today and it will take the food right out of the mouths of their children. And just for the record, CJ Cuti from New Haven is a jerk of a tax collector and relishes the jack boot approach as does his "compassionate" and profligate spender John DeStefano. Jokes all.

  13. Calhoun gets into heated spat over salary

Associated Press | Associated Press Writer
    February 21, 2009

HARTFORD, Conn. - Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun got into a heated exchange at a post-game news conference Saturday with a freelance journalist and political activist who questioned why the coach of a public university was making $1.6 million in tough economic times.

"Not a dime back," Calhoun joked as Ken Krayeske asked about Calhoun's salary and the state's budget deficit, which is estimated at $944 million for the current fiscal year and up to $8 billion over the next two years.

When Krayeske continued the line of questioning, Calhoun got angry.

"My best advice to you is, shut up," said Calhoun.

Maybe the Governor needs to find a way to balance the budget on Mr. Calhoun's salary?

  14. Tolls expected to return to state highways
    By Ken Dixon
    STAFF WRITER

HARTFORD -- It's just a matter of time before highway tolls return to Connecticut for the first time in nearly a quarter century, the co-chairmen of the legislative Transportation Committee agreed Monday.

At the very least, Connecticut should consider EZ Pass-type tolls on its borders with Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New York to provide revenue for statewide highway and railroad improvements, they said.

But opposition from border towns will have to be taken into consideration as the state plans for the inevitable, said Rep. Antonio Guerrara, D-Rocky Hill, and Sen. Donald J. DeFronzo, D-New Britain, the co-chairmen.

"I've been an advocate of border tolls," Guerrara said during a public hearing in the Legislative Office Building. "In four or five years this state will be better off."

"There is a need for additional revenue sources," DeFronzo said. "This is a process that we have to look at rationally and respectfully."

"We don't want these toll booths every 25 miles, the way we used to have," said Sen. Edith G. Prague, D-Columbia, who testified in favor of bills that would reinstitute tolls for the first time since 1985.

That was the year when Gov. William A. O'Neill ended them, following a January 1983 crash at the Stratford toll plaza on Interstate 95, when an out-of-control tractor-trailer plowed into a line of cars, killing seven people.

Rep. David A. Scribner, R-Brookfield, ranking member of the committee, said the
    Advertisement
current budget crisis makes the possibility more attractive.

"Obviously, the interest is at a different level today than in past years," Scribner said.

Rep. Janice R. Giegler, R-Danbury, said she and lawmakers from other border towns are worried about tolls forcing some motorists off interstate highways and onto local roads.

"Don't you think the western borders will see a tremendous impact?" Giegler said. "I know the impact for us will be tremendous."

Kevin Maloney, president of the Connecticut Messenger & Courier Association, said tolls would increase the cost of doing business in the state and raise prices on goods and services.

"It puts them in an economic disadvantage," Maloney said. "It negatively impacts our economy."

Other lawmakers said that so-called congestion pricing -- charging rush-hour motorists more for using state roads -- is a good way to make money and discourage people from driving if they don't have to.

"There's no question people will change their behavior if you have congestion pricing," Rep. Demetrios S. Giannaros, D-Farmington, said in support of the legislation.

John A. Danaher, commissioner of the state Department of Public Safety, spoke in support of legislation that would require motorists to move from the right lane when they see emergency vehicles stopped on highway shoulders.

"The concept is one we very much hope you support," Danaher said.

"Our goal is to create a mind set," DeFronzo said. We want to get drivers to change their attitude when they see emergency vehicles. "I don't have any doubt we'll move on this bill as well."

The committee has until March 16 to debate and vote on the bills.

THE ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION IS THAT THE DEMOCRATS IN WEST HARTFORD DID WHAT THE TAXPAYERS ELECTED THEM TO DO AND MADE THE ARRANGEMENTS WITH THEIR NATIONAL PARTY LEADERS TO SHARE SOME OF THE PIE WITH THEM, WHILE THE DEMOCRATIC LEADERS IN NEW BRITIAN WERE TOO BUSY COMMITTING ILLEGAL VOTES WITH CONFLICTS OF INTEREST, FINDING MORE WAYS TO SPEND YOUR MONEY, AND JUST FIGHTING OVER STUPID ISSUES JUST TO CREATE DISRUPTION. Let’s see, I would say Ineffective town council? I mentioned this in an earlier blog, how did the Majority Leader and the DTC chairman not know if anything was submitted to the state for consideration of stimulus funds as of last night’s council meeting? They are the Majority Democratic Party in a very democratic state. Why were Don Defronzo and Chris Murphy not pursuing funds for projects in New Britain? What Happened to Tim O’Brian? Talk about taxation without representation! Phil Sherwood is fighting to get Ms. Jacobs on the board of education when the Democrats have a clear majority on the Board. Majority Leader Trueworthy is incoherently insinuating that the well respected auditing firm is not providing quality service to the city without providing any evidence.
My guess is that somehow the council feels it must punish the Mayor. They must lose sleep at night. How can it be that someone who at times can be the most unlikable person you ever met be reelected and hold a high approval ratings. Though you may not like him, he gets results. He makes people see that New Britain has something to offer. He promotes the city.
It’s strange how every time a hot shot socialist freshman alderman thought he had the smoking gun, Democrats Defronzo, Murphy, O’Brian were available for sound bites. Yet they could not manage to inform the local DTC chairman and Majority leader of projects and programs in New Britain that could be submitted for funds.

  23. NEW BRITAIN 02/27/09 — In response to a call by Gov. M. Jodi Rell for possible shovel-ready projects that might take advantage of a federal economic Stimulus Program, the city of New Britain has submitted requests for $36.6 million in funds.

Mayor Stewart said he picked the projects that were ready to begin, would meet the criteria of job creation and had an emphasis on infrastructure and alternative energy sources.

Among the projects were a request of $5 million for the demolition of the city’s Transfer Station, construction of a facility with state-of-the-art recycling components and the creation of up to 75 jobs.

Mayor Stewart also asked for $400,000 for the demolition of buildings on Main and Chestnut streets to facilitate downtown revitalization and the building of a police station. Although creating less in the way of jobs, a request of nearly $1.2 million for solar panels for three schools — Gaffney, DiLoreto and Smith — would fulfill the need of providing alternative energy sources and cut costs to the school district.

New Britain High School was outfitted with solar panels that at the time of completion made it the largest solar panel facility on a municipal building in the state.

The list also included $300,000 for a Walnut Hill Park maintenance garage; $1.8 million for dredging the pond at Stanley Quarter Park; the conversion of Trinity-on-Main to a performing arts center for $1.1 million; as well as public works projects totaling more than $13 million. Other projects also were submitted for consideration.

In his letter to Gov.Rell, Mayor Stewart urged her to be mindful of the plight of mid size cities such as New Britain, as they are often overlooked in favor of larger cities.

In December we had imported just under 380 million barrels of oil at a cost of $19.3 billion.

In January, according to the Department of Energy, we imported 408.7 million barrels which cost the United States about $17 billion, so the transfer of wealth from America to foreign governments is continuing.

That’s an increase of about 7 percent over December’s imports!

New Britain's Council democrats are by and large, nice people. They are ordidinary NB citizens who really want to do what they can to help. The problem is that there are a few of them whose only purpose in life at this point is to denigrate and bring down the Mayor. These Democrats are led by the nose by Mike Trueworthy, Suzanne Bielinski Larry Hermanowski and of course, the major dirty tricks person, Phil Sherwood. The Party Leader of this group is Democratic Town Chair, John McNamara, purveyor of hate, snide comments and socialistic sentiments.
These five named people have enlisted the "talents" of former Herald reporter, brain dead Guinness and the unpfessional provateur, Rich Marzi to do their dirty work. Meanwhile the nine other Council democrats sit mutely by and do what they're told. Too bad!
Watch the 2/25/09 Council meeting next week and see what I am talking about.
During public participation - for which he shows up a disrespectfully late, 20 minutes - Trueworthy allows disrespectful scurrilous diatribes by, McNamara, Guinness and Marzi something which is anathema to Council rules of operation. Sherwood laughs while Guinness performs. Then Marzi accuses another citizen of collusion with the Mayor. Using a Point of perspnal privilege, Hermanowski, de facto accuses the Finance Director of lying.
This is what it's all about for Council democrats: don't do anything positive to help NB citizens, just try to make trouble for the administration.
As citizens, if the people of NB want to do something useful, get rid of these charlatans in November and elect some honest hardworking people to the Council who are interested in you and not self aggrandizement.

Of course, you're the one paying for the Democrats' trillion-dollar wish-list: electric golf carts, new cars for government bureaucrats, "tax cuts" for people who don't pay taxes, ACORN, and other items that do little or nothing to create new jobs.

The so-called "stimulus" also gutted welfare reform and opened the door to government rationing of health care.

  30. According to Ann Coulter:
You know what really irritates me about liberals? (Besides the fact that they're spineless little girls in pretty dresses who can't play rough because it musses up their hair...)

They always think liberalism fixes the problem -- even when it was liberalism that caused the problem in the first place!

Case in point, the Financial Meltdown of 2008 (and counting). To hear liberals tell it, it all goes back to Ronald Reagan -- who with his seductive "B-actor" charm fooled America into thinking that by slashing taxes, regulation, and government spending we could unleash free enterprise and create a new wave of prosperity.

Sure, liberals concede, that seemed to work for, oh, the better part of three decades, but now we're paying the price for all that "greed." The solution? A return to the pre-Reagan policies of Jimmy Carter, LBJ, FDR... Speaking of which, what will victory look like in the "War on Poverty"? When are they going to produce an "exit strategy" from that quagmire?

Unfortunately, the facts -- as always when you're talking about liberal theories -- tell a different story. A story in which all the major villains, it turns out, have one thing in common: government.

That's right. From the "Community Reinvestment Act" that pressured banks into affirmative-action lending, to those "government-sponsored enterprises" Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac -- who bought up all the resulting subprime loans and repackaged them as "investment grade" securities -- the greasy thumb-prints of government were all over this fiasco from beginning to end.

But those, as I say, are facts. And facts have no place in the fantasy world of Democratic policy-makers. Nor does history -- true history, that is, as opposed to the public-school propaganda that teaches, for instance, that FDR's New Deal got us out of the Great Depression, when in reality it only deepened and prolonged it.

But the question remains: What can those of us in the fast-dwindling, Reality-Based Community do to survive financially as the Obamacrats prepare a "New New Deal" that threatens to outspend the original by about ten thousand to one?

Limbaugh said Obama and the Democrats are waging an “assault” on capitalism by raising taxes on those who make more than $250,000 and by expanding welfare, limiting deductions on charitable contributions, increasing the deficit and giving the government an expanding role in Americans’ lives.

  54. Obama: Pants on Fire
By Alan Caruba Sunday, March 1, 2009

There is simply no point going forward without acknowledging a simple truth. President Barack Obama is a shameless liar.

One always feels constrained to pass judgment on a President, assuming that he has access to information only his office can possess. Then there’s the long campaign in which, in theory, the candidate was thoroughly vetted by the mainstream media.

In truth the MSM made almost no attempt to investigate the rather thin resume and biography of Obama. If you think about it, he had already written two biographies by the time he ran for office. One assumes he thought himself the only subject worth writing about.

The media, with a few notable exceptions, became a group of swooning teenage girls. They made those of us who had been fulltime journalists cringe.

Several books were published about Obama during the campaign and one of the best was by Dr. Jerome Corsi, a political scientist, and the data he unearthed or was unable to unearth depicts a pathologically deceitful man. The world has yet to have seen Obama’s real birth certificate, nor any evidence of his school and college records. There is no paper trail for Obama and you can be sure that is no accident.

Even when he served as editor of the Harvard Law Review, Obama contributed just one article to it, but where he secured the funds to attend, first Columbia University and then Harvard remains a mystery too. There is some testimony to the effect that it came from Saudi patronage. Why the Saudis would give support to a professing Christian is another mystery, if in fact the story is true.

Obama is a mean-spirited liar. When he announced the withdrawal of troops from Iraq he never once used the word “victory” even though he was addressing an audience of military personnel. Iraq is unquestionably a victory for our military. It is now a functioning democracy.

Moreover, 50,000 troops will remain in what is called a training or “protective” capacity. That is far less than the 140,000 we had at one time, but it’s hard to call it a full withdrawal. Not once! Not once did Obama make any reference to former President Bush’s achievement.

And some troops, perhaps 14,000, will transfer to Afghanistan. Obama is going to discover that Afghanistan will become his war. Those of us who think it is a very bad war, far worse than the Iraq expedition, will be as vocal as he was about “Bush’s war.”

Bush conquered a relatively modern nation, but Afghanistan is the wild lands ruled by tribes. Right beside it is Pakistan, coming apart as this is written, the prey of the Taliban who want to turn this nuclear-armed nation into a 7th century redoubt from which to wage war. Afghanistan is essentially a counterinsurgency operation and they take years to achieve any success and, as often as not, fail. Ask the Russians.

  55. Dow plunges every time he speaks in public about the economy

All those billions and trillions being conjured up by the financial wizards that Obama has surrounded himself with are completely disconnected to his claims of millions of new jobs, a quick turnaround of the economy, or any other of his many lies to justify the borrowing, taxing and spending that will leave this nation far worse off than any deficit he faced when taking over the office.

It is for this reason that the Dow plunges every time he speaks in public about the economy. As he begins his third month in office, more and more ordinary, common sense people are beginning to distrust him as much as I have for a very long time.

    * He is no friend to investors who are thunderstruck by his ineptitude.
    * He is no friend to the banks that suffered from the toxic assets the Democrats put in motion with their idiotic demand that loans be made to those who everyone knew would never pay them back.
    * He is no friend to corporate America.
    * He is no friend to small business owners whose taxes will rise.
    * He is no friend to the working man whose increasing unemployment can be traced in part to his performance in office and the policies he has announced.
    * He is no friend to Israel, our most important ally in the Middle East.
    * He is no one’s friend except Michelle’s and she is his Lady MacBeth.
    * He is the worst kind of liar; one who does not care if the lie is revealed.

About a week after the 2/25/09 Council meeting the Herald carried an article by Jim Craven regarding the NB Council's rehiring of the firm of Blum Shapiro to complete a comprehensive financial audit of the City.
A Democratic Alderman had indicated that he was "bluffed" into voting in favor of rehiring the same firm for this year. I magine that?! I guess his leaders didn't get to him fast enough to tell him how to vote. Could it be that another Dem Alderman has connections to another auditing firm he would prefer? HMMMM!

Professor Called Police After Student Presentation
Posted by admin on 2/24/09 • Categorized as News

For CCSU student John Wahlberg, a class presentation on campus violence turned into a confrontation with the campus police due to a complaint by the professor.

On October 3, 2008, Wahlberg and two other classmates prepared to give an oral presentation for a Communication 140 class that was required to discuss a “relevant issue in the media”. Wahlberg and his group chose to discuss school violence due to recent events such as the Virginia Tech shootings that occurred in 2007.

Shortly after his professor, Paula Anderson, filed a complaint with the CCSU Police against her student. During the presentation Wahlberg made the point that if students were permitted to conceal carry guns on campus, the violence could have been stopped earlier in many of these cases. He also touched on the controversial idea of free gun zones on college campuses.

That night at work, Wahlberg received a message stating that the campus police “requested his presence”. Upon entering the police station, the officers began to list off firearms that were registered under his name, and questioned him about where he kept them.

They told Wahlberg that they had received a complaint from his professor that his presentation was making students feel “scared and uncomfortable”.

“I was a bit nervous when I walked into the police station,” Wahlberg said, “but I felt a general sense of disbelief once the officer actually began to list the firearms registered in my name. I was never worried however, because as a law-abiding gun owner, I have a thorough understanding of state gun laws as well as unwavering safety practices.”

Professor Anderson refused to comment directly on the situation and deferred further comment.

“It is also my responsibility as a teacher to protect the well being of our students, and the campus community at all times,” she wrote in a statement submitted to The Recorder. “As such, when deemed necessary because of any perceived risks, I seek guidance and consultation from the Chair of my Department, the Dean and any relevant University officials.”

Wahlberg believes that her complaint was filed without good reason.

“I don’t think that Professor Anderson was justified in calling the CCSU police over a clearly nonthreatening matter. Although the topic of discussion may have made a few individuals uncomfortable, there was no need to label me as a threat,” Wahlberg said in response. “The actions of Professor Anderson made me so uncomfortable, that I didn’t attend several classes. The only appropriate action taken by the Professor was to excuse my absences.”

The university police were unavailable for comment.

“If you can’t talk about the Second Amendment, what happened to the First Amendment?” asked Sara Adler, president of the Riflery and Marksmanship club on campus. “After all, a university campus is a place for the free and open exchange of ideas.”

Brown woos Obama on global deal
    Jonathan Oliver, Political Editor

GORDON BROWN hopes to forge a partnership with President Barack Obama in Washington this week, to call for a “global new deal” to lift the world out of recession.

As he prepares for his first White House visit since the president’s inauguration, the prime minister has hinted that he is ready to make further tax cuts to boost the UK economy.

Brown will meet Obama on Tuesday and address a joint session of Congress on Wednesday. Aides say he has both to demonstrate to a sceptical British public that he commands the respect of the president, and to persuade the American political establishment that global action is needed to rescue the US economy.

Brown is under pressure to persuade American political leaders to sign up to bold aims for the G20 summit of industrial and leading developing nations, which is to be held in London next month.

Many US politicians believe economic policy should put America first, and have shown little interest in concerted global action. Brown will argue for a renewal of the transatlantic relationship, with the two powers working together to solve global economic problems.

The prime minister will borrow from the rhetoric of Franklin Roosevelt, who introduced the government-financed New Deal to tackle the US Depression of the 1930s. He will argue that his 21st century “global new deal” will also require public spending on a huge world-wide scale.

Writing in The Sunday Times today, Brown calls for “universal action to prevent the crisis spreading, to stimulate the global economy and to help reduce the severity and length of the global recession”.

His stress on continued economic “stimulation” will increase speculation about next month’s budget. No 10 sources said that, while no final decision had been taken about further tax cuts, the prime minister would do “whatever it took” to pull the UK out of recession.

As the Dow keeps dropping, the President is running out of people to blame.

As 2009 opened, three weeks before Barack Obama took office, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 9034 on January 2, its highest level since the autumn panic. Yesterday the Dow fell another 4.24% to 6763, for an overall decline of 25% in two months and to its lowest level since 1997. The dismaying message here is that President Obama's policies have become part of the economy's problem.

Americans have welcomed the Obama era in the same spirit of hope the President campaigned on. But after five weeks in office, it's become clear that Mr. Obama's policies are slowing, if not stopping, what would otherwise be the normal process of economic recovery. From punishing business to squandering scarce national public resources, Team Obama is creating more uncertainty and less confidence -- and thus a longer period of recession or subpar growth.

  70. WHERE'S THE FURLOUGHS AND LAYOFFS THAT MAYOR STEWART PROMISED? EVEN HARTFORD IS STEPPING UP TO THE PLATE AND DOING THE RIGHT THING---CUTTING JOBS AND CUTTING THE BUDGET!

Hartford School Budget Plan Calls For Over 250 Job Cuts

By JODIE MOZDZER | The Hartford Courant
    March 4, 2009

More than 250 jobs in the Hartford school district would be eliminated in 2009-10 under Superintendent Steven J. Adamowski's $373.9 million budget proposal.

Adamowski and Chief Financial Officer Paula Altieri presented the proposal, which decreases spending by $6.4 million, or about 1.7 percent, to the board of education at Greater Hartford Classical Magnet School Tuesday night.

The staff reduction would shrink the Hartford schools workforce by about 8 percent, with most of the cuts among teachers and support staff, spokeswoman Nancy Benben said. The specific positions to be cut will be announced March 17, Benben said.

"While this is not good news, it is better news," Adamowski said, referring to original estimates that as many as 365 positions would be eliminated.

Although the job cuts would save the district about $14.8 million, Adamowski's budget proposal includes $8.5 million to create two new accounts: a $6 million reserve fund and a $2.5 million account for minor improvements to school buildings.

The new accounts drew criticism from Councilman Larry Deutsch.

"What's the reserve for if we're laying off teachers today?" Deutsch said. "Usually you create a reserve in good times."

Andrea Johnson, president of the Hartford Federation of Teachers, said she was upset about the job cuts, but relieved that the numbers weren't as bad as the district had originally estimated.

"Less is better when you're talking about people's lives," Johnson said.

Still, Johnson was concerned to see money in the budget to continue opening new schools under the district's reform plan, while the district was cutting jobs.

Although specifics weren't discussed at the presentation, Altieri said the Little Owls Learning Center day-care program at Hartford Public High School was included in the proposal, at $170,000, which would increase the number of infants in the program from nine to 18.

The district had originally told the Little Owls staff that the program would not be funded next year.

The budget proposal assumes a $3 million increase in the city's contribution, to about $96.3 million. The city currently contributes about 32.8 percent of the school budget. Under the proposal, the city's portion would be 34 percent. The rest of the district's revenue comes from state and federal grants, which are projected to decrease by more than $9 million.

The board of education will review the proposal and hold a public hearing March 17. The board is scheduled to present its budget to the city council on April 14.

Adamowski said copies of the draft would be available by request through e-mail. The district's main phone number is 860-695-8000.

  71. EVEN THE LIBERAL MEDIA KNOWS WHAT A LIAR THE PRESIDENT IS:

BLANKLEY: Obama lied; the economy died
Big government is really his bag, but he doesn't own up to it
    Tony Blankley
    Tuesday, March 3, 2009

    OP-ED:

I am trying to capture the spirit of bipartisanship as practiced by the Democratic Party over the last eight years.

Thus, I have chosen as my lead, the proposition: Obama lied; the economy died. Obviously, I am borrowing this from the Democratic Party theme of 2003-08: "Bush lied, people died." There are, of course, two differences between the two slogans.

Most importantly, I chose to separate the two clauses with a semicolon rather than a comma because the rule of grammar is that a semicolon rather than a comma) should be used between closely related independent clauses not conjoined with a coordinating conjunction. In the age of Barack Obama, there is little more important than maintaining the integrity of our language - against the onslaught of Orwellian language abuse that is already a babbling brook, and will soon be a cataract of verbal deception.

The other difference is that George W. Bush didn't lie about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. He was merely mistaken. Whereas President Obama told a whopper last week when he claimed he was not for bigger government. As he said Tuesday night: "As soon as I took office, I asked this Congress to send me a recovery plan by President's Day that would put people back to work and put money in their pockets. Not because I believe in bigger government - I don't."

This he asserted though the budget he proposed the next day asks for federal spending as 28 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), higher by at least 6 percent than any time since World War II. Moreover, after 10 years, Mr. Obama's proposed spending as a percentage of GDP would still be 22.6 percent, nearly 2 percentage points higher than any year during the Bush administration, despite the full costs of the terrorist attacks of Sept, 11, 2001, the Iraq and Afghan wars and the rebuilding of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

Consider also his assertion in his not-quite-State of the Union address that:

"My administration has also begun to go line by line through the federal budget in order to eliminate wasteful and ineffective programs. As you can imagine, this is a process that will take some time. But we're starting with the biggest lines. We have already identified $2 trillion in savings over the next decade."

But, lamentably, a few days later, The Washington Post reported: "A senior administration official acknowledged yesterday that the budget does not contain $2 trillion in spending cuts over the next decade. Instead, the figure represents Obama's total efforts at deficit reduction, including tax hikes [of more than $1 trillion] on families making over $250,000 a year. It also includes hundreds of billions of dollars 'saved' by not continuing to spend $170 billion a year in Iraq."

Only a big government man would think of calling a trillion-dollar tax increase a spending cut or "saving." Technically, of course, it is true. A trillion-dollar tax increase will reduce spending by a trillion dollars for those private citizens who were taxed. And, from the perspective of the federal government, a trillion dollars taxed is a trillion dollars saved from the greed of the taxpayers who produced the wealth - and might well want to spend or invest it in non governmental activities.

But the foregoing are merely pettifogging numbers compared to Mr. Obama's bigger ideas about energy and health care.

Our president shares a fascinating idea about energy with most of what used to be known as the "small is beautiful" crowd. It is a curious phenomenon that one needs a very big government to enforce the beauty of small.

As Mr. Obama's energy secretary, Steven Chu, said last year: The price of electricity in America is "anomalously low." You see how much smarter that Nobel prize winner is than you. You probably thought you were already spending enough on electricity and fuel.

And sure enough, Mr. Obama explained last week that in order to make alternative energy sources wind, solar - perhaps eventually human muscle power? - economically competitive, he intends to raise the price of carbon-based energy until it is so expensive that even solar power will be such-a-deal.

This level of destructive irrationality cannot be accomplished in the private sector. It will take a very big government indeed to bring such inanities into being. (disclosure: being rational, I give professional advice to carbon-based energy producers.)

If President Obama were to try to misrepresent his positions for the next four years, there would be nothing he could say that would approach the inaccuracy of his claim last week that he is not for big government. It is the essence of the man and his presidency. He doesn't like America the way it has been since its founding - and it will take an abusively big government to realize his dreams of converting America into something quite different. If you don't know that, you don't yet know Barack Obama.

  73. Remember Mary Jo?:

Mary Jo Kopechne (July 26, 1940 – July 18, 1969) was an American teacher, secretary and administrator who died in a car accident in Chappaquiddick Island while being driven by United States Senator Ted Kennedy.

On July 18, 1969, Kopechne attended a party on Chappaquiddick Island, off the coast of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, held in honor of the Boiler Room Girls.

Kopechne left the party at 11:15 p.m. with Robert's brother Ted Kennedy, after he allegedly offered to drive her to catch the last ferry back to Edgartown where she was staying. Kennedy stated he made a wrong turn on the way and came upon a narrow, unlit bridge without guardrails. Kennedy drove the 1967 Oldsmobile Delmont 88 off the bridge and it overturned in the water. Kennedy extricated himself from the submerged car but Kopechne died, after what Kennedy said were several diving attempts to free her.

Kennedy contacted several aides that night, but failed to report the incident to the authorities until the car and Kopechne's body were discovered the next morning. Kopechne's parents said they learned of their daughter's death from Ted Kennedy[1] before he reported his involvement to the authorities, and that they only learned he had been the driver through wire press releases some time later.[citation needed]

A funeral for Kopechne was held on July 22, 1969, at St. Vincent's Roman Catholic Church in Plymouth, Pennsylvania, attended by Kennedy.[6] She is buried in the parish cemetery on the side of Larksville Mountain.

A week after the incident, Kennedy pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident after causing injury. He received a two month suspended sentence.[4] On a national television broadcast that night, Kennedy later said he was not driving under the influence of alcohol or had not engaged in any immoral conduct with Kopechne.[4]

The Chappaquiddick incident and the death of Kopechne became the grist for numerous books as well as a fictionalized treatment by Joyce Carol Oates. Questions remained about Kennedy's timeline of events that night, about his actions after the accident, and the quality of the investigation and whether official deference was given to a power politician and family.[7] The events surrounding Kopechne's death damaged Kennedy's reputation and are regarded as a major reason that he was never able to mount a successful campaign for President of the United States.[8]

Now he is hailed by the Democrats as a hero?

    March 5, 2009

The town has renegotiated the contracts of eight employee unions, saving on previously negotiated wages or freezing salaries for the 2009-10 fiscal year.

Police, fire, municipal and three board of education unions are among those that were renegotiated, town council Chairman Michael Clark said. He said the teachers' union considered, but did not grant, wage concessions.

In addition, the town manager, town clerk, interim school superintendent and the next school superintendent will forgo wage increases next year. The contract and raise concessions will save the town more than $615,000 in the overall budget, Clark said.

Clark said the town's work in renegotiating the contracts is "exceptional" because it involved town and school union contracts. He said the savings will help town officials reach their goal of avoiding a town budget increase

  76. Obama at War With America
    By: Scott Wheeler

Obama has declared war on America.

He says he is gearing up to fight anyone who disagrees with him, and he has singled some of us out by name: Joe the plumber, Rick Santelli and of course the mightiest voice among us, Rush Limbaugh.

Rush, as the Democrats tell it, is the leader of Republicans. The Democrats say this because they need to attach a face to represent the patriotic Americans that they are planning to attack.

The Obama administration and the Democrats keep repeating Rush's line that he wants Obama to fail, and they say that nothing could be more un-American than to root for Obama to fail.

Well there are a great many things more un-American than wanting Obama to fail — Democrats rooting for the United States to fail in the war on terrorism, for example. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said in April 2007, “This war is lost, and the surge is not accomplishing anything”; and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced to the world that we had lost in Iraq, and we should bring the troops home in defeat, empowering our enemies to kill more American soldiers.

Why did they make these inflammatory statements?

They did so for selfish reasons. Undermining the war effort and dividing the nation provided them with an opportunity to win more seats in the House and Senate and win back the White House.

That is far more un-American than anything anyone has said about Obama.

The truth is, nobody hopes Obama fails; but many of us are rooting for America's survival as a free and prosperous nation and that means blocking Obama's agenda everywhere we can.

What is striking about this is that while Obama has declared war on his fellow Americans at home, he is attempting to establish friendly relations with some of the worst people in the world — anti-American dictators and self proclaimed enemies of the United States.

Perhaps voters should have noticed when so many of our nation's enemies were supporting Obama during the presidential campaign. Hamas leaders endorsed him, as did Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Cuba's Fidel Castro, Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez and others.

Obama says he wants talks with the Iranian leader and even the terrorist group Hamas, while savaging patriotic Americans.

“I know these steps won't sit well with the special interests and lobbyists who are invested in the old way of doing business, and I know they're gearing up for a fight as we speak,” Obama said in his weekly radio address.

He's right — we are gearing up for a fight.

I am not ready to surrender the greatest nation in the history of the world to tim pan tyrant who never outgrew his adolescent communist stage.

“The old way of doing business” as Obama puts it, is the American way, and it has lead to more prosperity than any other “way” and provided more opportunity and economic freedom than the world has ever seen.

That “old way” of limited government and free enterprise however, is an impediment to Obama's aggressive socialist agenda and so he declares that he is going to fight us. Obama is fine with burning the bridge of prosperity behind him because he has his wealth, but he didn't earn it the “old way” — he got his the easy way, by trading favors from his public office for private ones and using his elected office to sell books about himself.

If he had gotten it the hard way, like many of the people he plans to take from, he would have too much respect for their work ethic to take from them their resources to buy votes that increase his power and his lot.

Maybe he should try his “new way” with some of the former Soviet Republics, who in the 1990s, broke free from the chains of tyranny. He would have a hard time selling his views to get them to trade their new economic freedom for his promises of government-sponsored security.

They have been down that road before.

Obama has fired a shot at those of us who oppose his onerous socialistic policies by characterizing our dissent as preparing for battle. he warns us, “My message to them is this: So am I.”

My message to Obama is this — Mr. President why don't you stand up to those who hate America instead of declaring war on those of us who love it?

  78. The battle in Congress over forced unionism and the so-called "Card Check" scheme is heating up dramatically, and it's vital I have your help today.

As I write you today, right now, Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis are meeting behind closed doors with ALL of America's top AFL-CIO union brass at their "Executive Council" meeting in Miami, Florida.

My sources tell me at the top of the agenda is how to ram the Card Check Forced Unionism Bill through Congress as soon as possible.

As you know, this disastrous compulsory unionism power grab would eliminate the secret ballot in workplace unionization drives and would subject millions of American workers to union intimidation and demands to pay union dues or be fired from their jobs.

Make no mistake -- giving union bosses even more compulsory unionism power in the middle of an economic crisis is a prescription for disaster. And giving union bosses hundreds of millions of dollars in additional compulsory union dues will enable them to gain a hammerlock on Congress for years to come.

You can bet the Pelosi-Reid Congress won't give us advanced notice of their strategy.

  79. Just another in a long list of Obama Lies:

Obama Lies To Gun Owners As Holder Reveals Gun Attack Plan

As a presidential candidate, Barack Obama deliberately and repeatedly lied to America's 90 million gun owners across the country when he insisted that he would not try to take away anyone's firearms, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said today.

CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb, reacting to yesterday's remarks by Obama's Attorney General Eric Holder that the president will seek to reinstate the ban on semi-automatic firearms, said Obama "knew he was lying to the nation because his own website touted his plan to revive the gun ban and make it permanent."

"We warned America that Obama's 'support' for the Second Amendment was empty rhetoric," he stated, "and now Holder's disclosure has confirmed it. Obama was lying, and now gun rights may be dying."

Several times on the campaign trail, Obama told voters "I'm not going to take your guns away." He said it at rallies in Duryea, Pennsylvania and in Boise, Idaho. He also told a news conference that "Lawful gun owners have nothing to fearÂ...I think people can take me at my word."

"Right now," said Gottlieb, "I wouldn't take Obama's word if he said it rains a lot in Seattle. Apparently, law-abiding gun owners have nothing to fear unless they own sport-utility rifles, semiautomatic shotguns, handguns and any other firearm that Obama and his anti-gun attorney general don't like.

"Thanks to Eric Holder, who has been far more honest than his boss about his anti-gun philosophy, it is now clear that the new president doesn't support the Second Amendment at all," he observed. "American gun owners should remind Democrats in Congress that the Second Amendment means what it says, especially when the president doesn't."
