IT IS ALSO A PLACE FOR THE RESIDENTS TO TELL THEIR ELECTED OFFICIALS HOW THEY FEEL ABOUT CURRENT POLITICAL ISSUES IN OUR CITY
I have been asked by some of my readers to have another open forum so they can vent their issues

Instead of running a candidate that amounts to little more than a "space filler" as a Democratic candidate for mayor, I think that the Democratic party of New Britain could do the city a great service to abandon their plans to nominate a place filler tomorrow night and instead cross endorse Mayor Timothy Stewart for mayor.
Then we can get on with the business of running the city for the good of everyone involved.

It is amazing how your page has evolved into such a "one stop" place for the latest in local, state, national, business news, sports, weather, and political commentary, all one place! After returning from vacation, I couldn't believe how much it has changed!
What does it take to request an open forum? Do we need a list of names to request this? I think the people need to take more control of their government. It is up to the people to make them work for us. People are getting lazy and having the government make choices for them instead of making the government work for the people. Please tell, there should be a process in place for the citizens to request an open forum.

(This is worth reading. It is short and to the point.)
Perhaps we are asking the wrong questions during election years.
Our Senators and Congresswomen do not pay into Social Security and, of course, they do not collect from it.
You see, Social Security benefits were not suitable for persons of their rare elevation in society. They felt they should have a special plan for themselves. So, many years ago they voted in their own benefit plan.
In more recent years, no congressperson has felt the need to change it. After all, it is a great plan.
For all practical purposes their plan works like this:
When they retire, they continue to draw the same pay until they die.
Except it may increase from time to time for cost of living adjustments...
For example, Senator Byrd and Congressman White and their wives may expect to draw $7, 800,000.00 (that's Seven Million, Eight-Hundred Thousand Dollars), with their wives drawing $275, 000..00 during the last years of their lives.
This is calculated on an average life span for each of those two Dignitaries.
Younger Dignitaries who retire at an early age, will receive much more during the rest of their lives.
Their cost for this excellent plan is $0.00. NADA!!! ZILCH!!!
This little perk they voted for themselves is free to them. You and I pick up the tab for this plan. The funds for this fine retirement plan come directly from the General Funds;

From our own Social Security Plan, which you and I pay (or have paid) into, every payday until we retire (which amount is matched by our employer), We can expect to get an average of
$1,000 per month after retirement.
Or, in other words, we would have to collect our average of $1,000 monthly benefits for 68 years and one (1) month to equal Senator Bill Bradley's benefits!
Social Security could be very good if only one small change were made.
That change would be to
Jerk the Golden Fleece Retirement Plan from under the Senators and Congressmen.. Put them into the Social Security plan with the rest of us
Then sit back.....
And see how fast they would fix it!

I enjoy reading your blog every day but to me, it's getting bogged down with state and national news. Said news tends to generate very little comment whereas your local blogs generate lots of comments. I'd prefer that you focus your attention on local issues.

I agree with this person. Some of your blogs eleicit NO COMMENTS FOR DAYS. Yet, you keep them in there. Those that read your column are less interested in national and state stuff and more interested in local news. E.g., Nobody seems to care that LeBeau wants to run for Governor. As our state representative you have proposed many a bill on property tax reform. You have had
a bill for Homestead exemption, Property Reval, Property tax fairness, Cap on annual increases to annual assesments? You also proposed a bill 5790 to suspend
all corporate tax credits during these economic times through 2011.
In reviewing what items you were able to get passed, I didn't see
that any of your bills made it through. That's ok we can't knock
you for trying. However I imagine
that these bills were short on how
you were going to pay for the tax
breaks you want to give. It is evident to me that you are pretty much anti-business based on bill 5790 and the fact that you interjected yourself with Walmart and their business. I guess big business will pay for the cuts you would like to see for property owners. Which brings us to your campaign to attract big business back to New Britain or the state for that matter? How do you propose to both attract big business by taxing them out of profit to provide lower taxes to property owners?
As a taxpayer I agree with some of your ideas about homestead and property relief for seniors. But we are seeking real solutions to the problem and we need to work with corporations in order to do business and create more jobs. The one thing I haven't heard from you is where you are going to also make necessary cuts from the fat goverment to help balance our state economy?

Without these horrid billionaires to tax, who would be paying for all the socialist programs these Marxists like to pay for with our tax dollars. Like Margaret Thatcher once said: "The problem with socialism is that sooner or later socialists run out of other people's money to spend."

I tried to answer this blog and it wouldn't go through. Am trying again, now.
Often, flags of other countries, etc., are displayed in Central Park. This usually done when an ethnic group is holding a special, cultural celebration or to honor a special historical person. E.g., The annual Greek Festival (Greek flag), Columbus Day (Italian flag). This tradition was started years ago and continues today. The special flag is flown on the lower, shorter flagpole along side of the taller more prominent flagpole flying "Old Glory. The City is merely paying particular respect in a cultural way to a particular etnic group. To my knowledge nobody has ever suggested that the "Stars and Stripes" is being "dishonored." Long may it wave - "GOD BLESS AMERICA."
