Mayor Tim Stewart Welcomes Statewide GOP Candidates

story and photos by: Frank Smith

Mayor Tim Stewart delivered the opening remarks on Saturday at the candidate training session held at the headquarters of Connecticut Republicans, located on Ellis Street here in New Britain. Mayor Stewart told the crowd that there is always a personal reason that draws each and every one of us into politics and he went on to explain that his reason was the need to get a handle on taxes. He said “I’m here to hold the line on spending and your taxes.”
The mayor then introduced me to the attendees, explaining that I am a local Democrat who runs a blog that he described as doing a good job keeping the public informed on current events. I felt honored to be a guest at such an event which reminded me how fortunate New Britain is to have been chosen as the headquarters for the state Republican Party.

The day long session, attended by Republican municipal candidates from across Connecticut, included some other prominent Republican speakers including Newington Mayor Jeff Wright, Norwalk Mayor Dick Moccia, and Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton, State Representatives Penny Bacchiochi of Stafford and David Labriola of Naugatuck. All of these elected officials shared one common denominator, and that is that they are Republicans representing districts where Democratic voters make up the majority of voters in their communities (including New Britain).
They shared some interesting insight into how to run a grass roots campaign and even some experiences from past campaigns.

  3. Frank Smith is a Democrat and a damn good one at that!

He understands clearly what can and does happen when people who are not Democrats infiltrates the Democrat Party. These Socialist/Marxist have infiltrated the Democrat Party and have saturated it’s ideals into the minds of those who are easily impressed by cunningly devised words.

They declare that those who disagree with their agenda are terrorist and anti-American.

Frank understands that he ought to stay in his party and expose those Socialist/Marxist politicians and ideals and change his party back to the way it was intended to be from the inside out. Frank, I admire your dedication, commitment and loyalty. You Sir, are a great leader of your party, whether the current DTC leadership acknowledges you as such dosen’t matter, many of those in your party can see past the smoke and mirrors of their tricks.

For this, I, a republican, am very grateful. I’m not one who has to experience something in order to learn from it. I am able to learn from others mistakes and I am very aware of the dangers and threats of allowing Democrats who have been fed up with the Socialist/Marxist agenda of their party and have jumped the fence to the Republican side without changing their own convictions to adopt Republican convictions and values.

This is unacceptable and must stop! The boundaries outlined by those who struggled to clearly define them must be honored and guarded. When our values and convictions are compromised our entire party suffers. If you don’t believe this is true, one only needs to look at the Democrat Party for the confirmation of this truth.

I believe that Democrats, Republicans and Independents can and must get together to fight off these Socialist/Marxist ideals that will be the death of America if we all are not vigilant in its defense. When approached by one of these Socialist/Marxist, stand your own ground and let them know they are not welcome in your own party. Be diligent in your battle knowing your fight is worth its scars.

  4. "WOW! Is frank smith still a democrat?"

Sort of, I heard he was unable to muster up a single vote on the 50 something person town committee to get on the ballot.

I think the dozens of his peers got it all wrong though.

  5. What does his covering an event as a member of the press have to do with what party he is affiliated with?

Following this logic, you would have to bar any liberal reporters from the Herald or the Courant from ever attending any future Republican events because I would guess they are all Democrats too.

Perhaps the host respected the fact that he is fair and balanced enough to cover such an event without adding his own party's liberal spin to things?

Isn't that a novel idea. Just telling the story the way it is. Some of us call it telling the truth. Maybe the New Britain Democrats should try it some time?

  7. Frank is a true Democrat of the old school when the Democratic Party represented the working man, and not the socialist values espoused by the radical extremists who have hijacked our party at the local and national levels by infiltrating it with Acorn Agitators.

You might classify him among the millions of "Reagan Democrats" which the Congressmen are quickly finding out represents the majority of the party.

  8. I saw on Fox News that the Democrat Party on the national level is "self-destructing." I think that is clearly happening here at the local level too! These nut jobs on the council are getting desperate and that is why their leaders like Sherwood and Trueworthy are acting so bazaar and making such wild outrageous statements.

  9. Frank,
Did they have a class teaching mayoral candidates to meet with the unions to advice them on how to fleece the taxpayers once he is elected? Oh sorry, wrong party.

  10. Frank Smith ought to force a primary for Alderman in his ward...I think he would get enough signatures.

  12. What do you call appointing 38 Russian style Czars, socialized medicine, government seizure of manufacturing like car companies, and government take-over the financial industry like the banks and wall street if it isn't communist and socialist?

How about a candidate for mayor meeting with a public employee labor union to help them get better benefits and higher wages that the taxpayers will have to foot the bill for? Is that not socialist? Apparently he couldn't even wait to be in office before starting to stick it to the taxpayers?

  13. Thank God we have Frank Smith to lead the movement to rid the city of commies masguerading as Democrats.

And as for the Obamacrats, I am against government health insurance. Medicare works well and should be kept the way it is.

  14. Mr. Don Naples, who is a candidate for city council in the 4th ward, made a good point in his letter regarding Alderman Sherwood's ridiculous comments to a developer planning to invest $5 million here in New Britain (Phil Sherwood: "WHERE'S THE BEEF?"

Mr. Naples makes the point that the young Sherwood doesn't understand that the council needs to put out a welcome mat for investors and not swing a baseball bat at them.

I finally think I understand the problem. Could it be that the young Sherwood is just too immature for the high office he currently holds?

There is a certain amount of life experience that makes one more understanding of different situations, so maybe he is just too young and too inexperienced?

  15. Not a good time to be a Democrat in Connecticut:

Who do you blame for Connecticut's budget mess?

    Gov. Rell
    18%

    The Democrats
    28%

    The Republicans
    7%

    All of the above
    45%
