Two More Facilities for New Britain’s Friendship Center Underway.

The new facilities will deliver 21 new apartments to help the homeless. One new building is currently under construction at 85 Arch Street and the second location is a renovated building at 57 Arch Street--commonly known as the “ Vega Building” which housed the old Vintage Shop.

This facility will serve people and families who are in trouble, while providing them with a place to live during their healing process, and is intended to help them move on with their lives.

Let us all hope the completion dates, for both operations, will have them in service for the upcoming cold weather.

  2. President Clinton actually formed the welfare to work program in the 1990's and placed a 5 year cap on receiving welfare benefits. The problem has been that poverty rates have increased. Poor persons encouraged to get off of welfare have not found work that either affords them healthcare benefits or at their rate of pay precludes them from purchasing private health insurance. Programs such as the goverment funded husky plan have placed many
children but often the adult family
member has found themself either in-eligible for coverage or the program has been tapped out and
    closed at times.

This has simply been a shift in how
welfare is paid. The person actually performs some degree of work for benefits. This isn't a bad thing but studies have revealed
that poor people have not really improved their economic situation.

The new goverment healthcare initiative is simply a big additional welfare program that aims at getting a much larger cross
section of society dependent upon it. Europe has lived this way since the 1940's. The difference
is they pay the majority of their salaries into the social system and are left with very little to advance themselves financially. They work less in Europe and suffer from less stress. Everything is provided for them through the goverment from maternity coverage, time off for a new baby, childcare, healthcare,
retirement and so on. They still enjoy long lunch breaks and receive a month off each summer. Their housing is often controlled.
Who can buy, where you can buy how
you can buy. In Holland for instance you have to get on a list
for home ownership. You don't have to think too much for yourself
and because you can't think too much for yourself. There is no motivation and no rush to excel or achieve.

Like anywhere they have their wealthy too that aren't tied to the system because they are financially free.

We are in the midst of time in the U.S. where our current goverment is pushing to take us to greater dependency. With that we will see
increased taxes and decreased independence. It will be interesting to see if the spirit of the American will stand up and
revolt or if we will just be revolted. I want the month of July off and I am looking forward
to shorter work days and 2 hour
    siestas.

  4. Agreed. The last thing we need to do encourage unsightly vagrants to come or stay in OUR city. We should take away housing for these freeloaders because that is exactly what they are!

The dumbocrats don't get this or maybe they do and they dont care. Vote for Salvio and all the other Republicans if you want to clean up our city! He says it like it is. We need to bring OUR city back to the good old days.

  5. Even better question, where would the Democrats get all that money they love to give away to everyone without the Republicans that they hate so much to work so hard and pay all those ever increasing taxes to fund all those give-a-ways?

  6. Wait, please correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t it Tim Stewart who has an initiative to end homelessness in New Britain on the tax payers dime?

He puts them up in apartments and feeds them all with the taxpayer’s money. How much of taxpayers monies are being spent for this? Good luck finding that out!!!

As far as I can tell, we have 2 parties in New Britain, a crazy ultra liberal Democrat party and a more conservative Democrat party who call themselves “Republicans”!

  7. It's the mayor's 10 year plan to end homelessness, started under DUMBOCRAT LUCIAN PAWLAK - and continued after he was gone. The program doesn't let the homeless live and eat for free. The program works with businesses associated with the New Britain Chamber of commerce to get them JOBS and OFF THE STREETS. Under the Mayor's plan, these people don't get off for free, they have to pay rent once they are given a job through the program. It's designed to get them back on their feet and give them real world training so they can begin their life as one like the rest of us. Hell, if its getting them off the streets and stopping them from haggling me down for money, I'm happy. AND its NOT specifically New Britain taxpayers money that goes towards it. Talk to your friends at the state, they find the money to fund it.

  9. Yea, How much of taxpayers money is being spent on Tim's Handout Program?

  10. I work in a service industry (no give-aways) and have met a number of people who live in shelters of some sort, and who have told me that they never dreamed they would be in such a situation. Divorce & medical expenses are just 2 reasons that could put hard-working people over the edge; causing them to lose their homes and require a fresh start. Mayor Stewart has compassion for people in this kind of need. There is a difference between a hand-out and a hand-up. I hope that you who have no compassion never find yourselves in a situation where you legitimately need a helping hand, since you are so fast to diss those who do.

    ReplyDelete
  11. which one of Tim O'Brien's hundreds of handout programs are you referring to? O'Brien apparently never saw a tax he didn't like to increase or a social program he didn't want to waist our money on, so you will need to be more specific.

  12. These types of programs that are meant to help people who have been dealt a bad blow in their lives to get back to working and supporting themselves are commendable.

I think many people are confusing this program with so many programs that are just meant to allow people who just don't want to work to live forever off the rest of us. Connecticut is so bloated with "freebies" for anyone who doesn't want to work, you can't blame some of us for not recognizing the difference.

  13. “Mayor Stewart has compassion for people in this kind of need.”

If Mayor Stewart is having compassion for people in this kind of need then maybe he should use his money and give it to these people in need.

As another blogger pointed out, there are “so many programs that are just meant to allow people who just don't want to work to live forever off the rest of us. Connecticut is so bloated with "freebies" for anyone who doesn't want to work…” certainly these people who had a “devoice or medical expenses” could sign up for these programs and use them for the purpose they were intended for.

Mayor Stewart is throwing good money after bad in hopes to make himself look compassionate. I have an idea, how about showing compassion for us hard working families who can’t keep up with the spend and spend some more mentality that dominates City Hall.

Rumor has it that O'Brien and company used to go to Boston and other cities to have them come to New Britain and apply for low-income housing (Section 8).

I have an idea, how about showing compassion for us hard working families who can’t keep up with the spend and spend some more mentality that dominates City Hall.----So what is your solution, to vote for a Liberal like O'Brien who has a record for supporting jacking up taxes and giving away money to socialist programs like it grows on trees--at least that is what his voting record in the legislature shows, so why not give him the keys to the city so he can give them away?

  16. Tim O'Brien will not succeed in his run for mayor. The residents in New Britain didn't even give Obama a win.

  17. We should trust in the decisions that Tim Stewart is making for this city including support of the Friendship Centers family housing.
You can be a conservative and still have a heart where it is needed and where children come in,
    especially those who are homeless
    we should give a hand-up.

It has been reported that during these economic times more families with children are finding themselves without a home or place to sleep at night. I cannot imagine, can you? Tim Stewart has pledged to end homelessness in New Britain. This doesn't make him a money wasting liberal it proves his commitment to New Britain.

Vote Tim Stewart and his team for re-election in November.

  18. I hope that the provisions that New Britain is making for the homeless is for only New Britain residents. If other surrounding towns need to place someone or a family, they should be charged accordingly.

In my opinion, Tim O'Brien is even more liberal than Obama! Check out his voting record in the legislature!

  20. “We should trust in the decisions that Tim Stewart is making…” Trust is earned not simply given! Tim Stewart gave me his word on three different occasions and still he hasn’t made good on his word which tells me that his word is worthless! It has been said that a man is only as good as his word and since his word is worthless what does that tell you about the man?

Anyone who knows me knows I am a person of compassion however I would never take your hard earned money and give it to those who are lazy and refuse to work. I understand that people meet challenges in life that may appear to great to overcome, but expecting the government to meet these needs is ridiculous. That is what “family and friends” are for, helping each other in times of need. If someone’s own family and friends refuse to help them out what does that tell you about those people?

I only liked one freeloader, that was Freddy The Freeloader.

What are you saying, you are going to go to bed with the devil so to speak? You said you don't like supporting those that are lazy and refuse to work. Put O'Brien in city hall and you might as well just turn over your wallet too! Check his legislative record of voting for tax increases (seizing 30% of all business income and 30% of inheritances for examples) and for spending more on social programs (free health care and other benefits for the employees of private contractors doing work for the state for one example). It will probably shock you to see the things he has voted for! Let his record speak for itself.

Don’t be ridiculous, I wouldn’t waste my time voting for Tim O’Brian! But don’t think for one moment that I will gladly vote for Tim Stewart either. The way I look at it is I will be voting for the least of two devils, literally.

If Tim is so proud of his ending the homeless in New Britain program than why is it that he isn’t willing to share with the rest of us how much of our money is being spent on his program? He is not being very transparent is he? What happened to full disclosure?

  23. Most often what is overlooked when it comes to emergency shelter and transitional housing within New Britain is that these shelters/apartments as with shelters/apartments in most inner city communities actually serve all of the surrounding towns.

As we struggle with the issue of homelessness we should be asking our neighbors (Southington, Berlin, Newington, Farmington, Plainville, Wethersfield and others) to contribute.

Also if these apartments are to be even partially funded by New Britain taxpayers than those who receive these benefits should be required to pay off some of these entitlements by working to improve the community as a whole.

Graffiti removal in the town center and refuse collection in city parks and downtown are just a couple of examples of work that could be required. Of course some of these folks have other valuable skills that could benefit the community as a whole as well.

Though some would have you believe that conservatives are heartless uncaring bigots that in fact is not true at all.

We just believe that personal responsibility is the true key to breaking the chains poverty of homelessness.

  24. >"Mayor Stewart is throwing good money after bad in hopes to make himself look compassionate."<

    -It's ELECTION TIME A-G-A-I-N

    >"Mayor Stewart has compassion for people in this kind of need."<

-So the homeless are CAREFULLY moved to Broad St and the view from his perch isn't "messy".

    >"Wait, please correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t it TIM STEWART who has an initiative to end homelessness in New Britain on the tax payers dime?"<

-YES, But as I SAID that was called ELECTION TIME.

    >"He puts them up in apartments and feeds them all with the taxpayer’s money.">

-Spending $XXXXXXX of taxpayer money helped those 8 people but MORE IMPORTANTLY... he was re-elected!!!

    >"How much of taxpayers monies are being spent for this? GOOD LUCK FINDING THAT OUT!!"<

-Freedom of Information does NOT apply here:
    (New Britain Herald)
A letter from Mayor Timothy Stewart threatened alderman Greg Gerratana with prosecution last week, directing him to a section of city charter setting out penalties for those who “hinder or obstruct” the mayor’s work.
“He needed to be set straight,” Stewart said.

The first-term alderman said he’d merely A-S-K-E-D Parks and Recreation Director Bill DeMaio whether work at Stanley Golf Course was being done by ->city employees.<-

His (Gerratana) concern was ensuring public funds were not being used for rehabilitation work at a course restaurant that was to be done by a private contractor, but the mayor took it as an affront, he said.

-Any questions regarding the use of taxpayer money must go through the mayor first or it may hinder and/or obstruct his job, "alignments" are given free of charge.

    >"Rumor has it that O'Brien and company used to go to Boston and other cities to have them come to New Britain and apply for low-income housing (Section 8)."<

-??? What ??? Rumor=I heard it from a friends daughter who's brother-in-law's cousin heard about it from some guy who lives in Ohio but knows a kid from New Britain.

    >"Graffiti removal in the town center and refuse collection in city parks and downtown are just a couple of examples of work that could be required. "<

-In fact Mayor Stewart did offer a reward that happened to be the DAY before elections and perhaps those 8 homeless residents did the clean up job?

">The last thing we need to do encourage unsightly vagrants to come or stay in OUR city. We should take away housing for these freeloaders because that is exactly what they are!"<

-So the announcement the mayor said about helping the homeless getting jobs and housing was a good thing or bad thing?

    >"The dumbocrats don't get this or maybe they do and they dont care. Vote for Salvio and all the other Republicans if you want to clean up our city! He says it like it is. We need to bring OUR city back to the good old days."<

-The good ole days are GONE, rose colored glasses went out of style 50 yrs ago. Clean up OUR city? Rent a giant pooper scooper?

  25. If some of you are going to leave inane attacks with no evidence, at least sign your name, you cowards! The usual suspects, I bet, with axes to grind because they don't agree with the Mayor.
