When is Phil Sherwood going to stop treating taxpayers like a never-ending checking account? He was elected to act in our best interest, not to redistribute wealth, protect his favorite special interest groups or advocate on behalf of the unions.
Richard Marzi is not a representative of the city. And even if he was, he continually acts in a reckless and defamatory manner, outside the scope of his official capacity. Taxpayers shouldn’t be forced to foot the bill for him once again letting his personal opinions, grudges and unchecked emotion override his common sense. If Sherwood wants to do Marzi a favor, stop acting like an enabler and convince your friend to take a class on impulse control.
This is classic slippery slope - once we set this precedent, then the city is on the hook for all similar situations.
Rich Marzi is a private citizen and the NRZ's are not municipal entities. Therefore, he should not have the city be responsible for his legal representation. Phil Sherwood should keep out of it, regardless of his "friendship" with Mr. Marzi.
Phil Sherwood Believes that New Britain taxpayers should foot the legal bill for Mr. Marzi's inept leadership of the Oak St NRZ?
Give us a break.
When Mr. Marzi brought his personal grudge into the NRZ he should have been removed from his leadership position. If Rich represents the city interest as alderman Sherwood claims than I for one would like some accountability for the profane comments made on my behalf by Mr. Marzi.
The ineffective leadership of the North Oak NRZ is already costing the City due to opportunity lost. Now that leadership wants us the taxpayer to defend his slanderous behavior in a court of law?
Rich get real. And please ""RESIGN"" so that the NRZ can move on to doing the business it was intended to do.
The only ignorant one is you Rich! You continue to try and play politics with your so-called leadership position in the NRZ because you do not have a real job. I'm sure O'Brien promised you a job when he got elected, oops, sorry he lost! You simply are an unemployable lazy slob with axes to grind. Someone should check out the slum that you live in and compare it to Ancona's properties. You are not a public servant for the city and are not entitled to any representation for the allegations of slander against you. Perhaps a good role of duct tape will suffice for you and your cohorts on the common council. Apple didn't fall too far from the tree, eh?
I do not know you, I only know of you. The one thing I can say about this matter is that you do need to resign from this position.
When someone is in a position in the public eye, weather it be elected, volenteer, or paid, it is your soul responsibility to act within the best intrest of that organization and it appears that you were unable to do so.
That being said I am apauld that alderman Sherwood tried to ram this down the councils throat. Considering this law suit was filed on 10/22/09 and it appears that you responded on 10/28/09 which proves that it was another back door move by Sherwood trying to use his 11 to 4 ace in the whole to get what he wants. It appears that you have had enough time to prepare for this case and should do so at your own expense, considering you were in no way, shape or form representing the best intrest of anyone in this city let alone the NRZ.
There is no room in this City for people like you and Sherwood, who think that you are above the law.
The only good thing that has come of all this is that the North Oak NRZ will get new leadership and Sherwood just added to the large list of wrong doing for this Great City, Hopefully putting another nail in his coffin not to be re-elected in 2012
Sherwood must have access to Obama's printing press, or at least seems to think the taxpayers of New Britain do.
Just in the past week, he is pushing for the public to start supporting the failing New Britain Herald by forcing us to pay for endless advertising in their paper, even after the State of Connecticut removes that requirement on municipalities--for the sole purpose of saving the municipalities. Most people seem to view this effort as Sherwood paying back the Herald for printing only stories that agree with his extremist ideology.
Now just a few days later, Sherwood is attempting to commit the taxpayers to paying for the legal fees to defend a private citizen who is not acting in any official capacity to represent the city (wouldn't we all like to have the city pay our legal bills?).
The city will soon go broke, from having to support "The Friends of Sherwood" which is rapidly becoming a bigger club than the freinds of Angelo.
Sherwood said Marzi, who was made president of the organization in March 2008, deserved the services of city attorneys because of his work in the NRZ and the community. Sherwood went on to say that if the city did not support people like Marzi, the fear of lawsuits could have a chilling effect on local advocates. Maybe the City should consider if it should provide some protections to NRZ members, but if so, it should only be when they are acting in the best interest of the City, and on the advice and consent of the membership as a whole. I don't think Rich's comments met that standard. He messed up, and should not be rewarded for it. Thanks to Councilman Skunky, now all volunteers and NRZ members have this hanging over their heads. It's a lose / lose proposition. If the City does in fact show that NRZ's have no protections, why should any of us participate in NRZ activities. On the other hand, if we somehow prove that the City is responsible, why would the City and taxpayers support these types of organizations in the first place since it opens them up to potential liability?
Some of you do very meaningful and appropriate work on behalf of your neighbors. Don't let yourself be used by Sherwood and other hate mongers; help others, not politicians who don't care about you except to use you.
Before talking about what the tax payers should not be flipping a bill for, check out what you are paying for and you might be very surprised. This is the good old USA let's never forget that we are aloud to voice our opinions. You may disagree with some of the things being said but give your fellow American the entitlement to speak what he feels, experienced knows, etc. There are both sides to a story somewhere in the middle lies the truth.
It is amazing that a country that bellows out to the world how united we are; would be amazed how far we are away from that term. Name calling, belittling? than you wonder why our children have no respect. Don't shake your heads the next a teen or child is acting in a manner you disapprove. Read your blogs (for those who are insulting) and understand you are part of the cause of a nation loosing its respect, compassion and the fear of facing the truths
This Jim Sanders Jr. must be the son of Jim Sanders St.
If if he is GO Go Jim Jr. Your father is a great man and is a big asset to the community and it sounds like you are headed in the right direction. Keep up the good work.

I hope that the alderman from Russwin Rd reads this one and thinks about how he told fellow council members 'Hope you rot in hell'
Given the opertunity to call Richard Marzi after a response to my recent comment on this issue, I did call him.
After about a 30 minute phone conversation with Mr. Marzi I am able to say that he was abble to offer some very interesting information on this issue. I will not comment on most of our conversation, only to say a couple of things.
The first thing being that this to issue needs to be looked at on all sides to determine what happens next.
Iknow that sounds very vague but it's really all I can say at this time.
The most interesting and disturbing part of our conversation was when I asked him when he informed the counsil of this issue, he responded by saying THREE WEEKS PRIOR TO THE MEETING!!!
I did not ask him who he spoke to but I would guess it was Sherwood. ( I hope richard will confirm this) That being said we need to confirm this is true and ask Sherwood why he withheld information from the rest of the counsil. Could it be that it did't fall in line with his anti bullying campaign?
These actions are inexcusable and answers must be given in a timely manner, and should also be brought to the attention of the ethics commission
Thank you for giving me the oppertunity to speak with you Richard.
This whole argument is stupid. If Rich Marzi did not slander Mr. Anconia then, when he wins the court case he can request that Mr. Anconia pay his legal fees.
However If the city pays for Rich Marzis legal fees and in fact he did slander Mr Anconia than the city is left holding the bag.
This is simple and if you folks cannot see the political gamesmanship that Alderman Sherwood is employing here than you might be blind.
And don't for a minute think I am defending the property owner I am not.
I have stated time and again that Rich Marzi is the wrong person for the job. His hot headed responses to anyone who disagrees with his approach are unprofessional and only damage his cause. See his response to critics above. Really Rich challenging people to street fights will not help our cause.
Please resign so we can get back to the work of improving our community!

Just saw Jim Sanders'report on his report of when he called Rich Marzi. Typical sleazy gamesmanship by Sherwood; he is told by Marzi of Marzi's problem 3 weeks before the Council meeting. ReplyDeleteI got a speeding ticket on my way to the North-Oak NRZ meeting. Could you please submit a resolution authorizing my reimbursement?
