New Britain School Board To Decide On Union Offer - Courant.com

  1. The primary contributors to the New Britain Democratic Town Committee and its candidates are the members of the municipal employees unions. They give these candidates large sums of money, volunteer on their campaigns, hand out information, make phone calls, register voters and drive voters to the polls. Given that fact, why would the Democrats ever tell the unions no? Anything the unions want, the unions get - that is why it has been so difficult to reduce taxes and control spending in New Britain. I applaud Mayor Stewart for attempting to break this cycle of insanity.

Additionally, while these municpal employees support the Democrats here in New Britain where they work, most of them live in the surrounding suburbs, and in their own home towns, they support Republican candidates who pledge to control spending and cut their taxes. Ironic, isn't it.

  2. On this particular issue -accepting the union's offer - the BOE should agree with Dr. Kurtz, to wit, in the long run, the union offer will coast NB Taxpayers cost the city millions more than it purports to save.

Perhaps the radicals in the city council need to wake up to the fact that because these employees live out of town, they are not a threat to any elected officials the way they woke up long ago in Hartford's city hall. Hartford unions are virtually powerless because everyone knows the majority of their members live in the suburbs because the city pays so much, they can afford to live in towns run by Republicans.

  4. Amazing 21st century union math; give $1.5M worth of concessions get back $2.8M in contract goodies. Where are the savings? The teacher union VP made her heroic statement, and to the applause of the crowd, the night of the city council budget meeting that her teacher's union gave the board of education $1.5M to help the district. How is this helping if the district has to pay $1.3M more?

No wonder the teachers union complained when Dr. Kurtz required competency testing for teachers in math. Some flunked the test. Now the district can "lay off" more senior but less competent teachers.

After all, it's for the children.

  6. In a letter to the editor that appeared in today's Herald, someone wrote:

If that means that teachers don’t get a raise and have to take a furlough, then so be it. If I have to pay more in property taxes, then so be it. If teacher layoffs are determined by merit and ability, then so be it.

The trouble with this logic is that the layoffs are by seniority. The young an eager teachers who are trying to make a career for themselves get laid off while a bunch of lazy old prunes are retained because they have tenure and are protected by the unions.

In a perfect world, the layoffs would be by merit, but in a perfect world, there wouldn't be such a thing as teacher unions either.
