"NEW BRITAIN — With only seven days left until the Common Council’s budget must be delivered to the city, Mayor Timothy Stewart and Majority Leader Phil Sherwood expect it to be very close but taxpayers can expect less of a tax increase than originally thought."
Less of an increase! For those who pay the taxes that won't be enough until the number is zero.
Fact is, Council Democrats are looking for a way give the BOE another $3 million. Now we are again threatened with fears of more layoffs (see Craven's other article in tuday's Herald), 135 or so. The liberals are falling for this as they do every year.
The taxpayers of NB have been bled enough. The BOE must be made to live with what they have been "given." Doris Kurtz doesn't care - she keeps spending like a drunken sailor.
Social programs account on the flip side to revenue for the city. It's a double edged sword. The government offers up grants (free money) to low income areas like New Britain. Socialists live off of these grants and apply and wa la! Free money. This money creates jobs (employees to man the program, usually friends of a political person) and free stuff. Problem is, these grants are temporary. The money is usually retracted on a slow withdrawal or cut ASAP when the feds decide. Now then, we must eliminate the program, the jobs, the free stuff and everybody starts screaming foul. What a joke. Alot of towns would never apply for these indian giver programs because they understand how to live within their means and they send their budgets, (including their BOE) to referendum vote. Now there is a novel idea for New Britain. A referendum that wakes up the voting public.
The BOE is not the only culprit here. The city employees, fireman, police, dept heads, that still pull down ridiculously high salaries and pensions ,benefits; are also part of the problem. The city CANNOT CONTINUE in a viable manner if these problems are not corrected and soon. We are running out of time and taxpayer people and base to continue this charade! jccd
This article was another Sherwood trick! At the end of the Tues. night meeting between the BOE and the Common Council, Sherwood "promised" he would vote against any budget that did not include millions more for the Education budget. So Sherwood is really saying, "TO H#@* WITH THE NB TAXPAYERS."
IT'S LIKE THE OBAMA ADMISTRATION, THE PEOPLE SAID OVERWHELMINGLY, WE DON'T WANT YOUR HEALTH CARE PROGRAM BUT THE DEMS SHOVED IT DOWN OUR THROATS ANYWAY.
Wait and see the tricks that the Council Dems have for NB taxpayers on Monday.

I say let them lay off the 135 if they want and don't give them another dime.
ReplyDeleteWho would miss them anyway?
“We are looking at a lot of ways of making sure we deliver the best possible budget,” Sherwood said Monday.
ReplyDeleteHow about cutting some social programs????
