OUR VIEW: Task force a win-win - Belvidere area, The New Britain Herald (newbritainherald.com)

31 comments:

  1. What happened to the Task Force that has been meeting several times a year at CCSU. It included city officials, neighbors,CCSU administrators and students. They seemed to be making strides. Did it disband or is Sherwood upset because he was not asked to be a member of the original Task Force?

  2. Since the editorial is written by Smith, doesn't he mean kool-ad instead of lemonade?

  3. I appreciate the Herald's remarks about the task force. It was my intention right from the beginning to try to solve a problem in a positive manner, where everyone would benefit.

I want to make it clear that this is a non-partisan committee and I don't want to make this a political issue. This is simply about bringing business into our downtown, and providing options for students who deserve a place to go and have good clean fun.

I am not aware of any other task force that was meeting at CCSU as referred to by "Anonymous". Not to be critical of anyone, but obviously the "task force" referred to was not making headway, or the problem would not still exist. Before the Common Council meeting I met personally with Phil Sherwood and Mayor Stewart to discuss this idea. Both were very receptive, and Phil offered to draft a resolution. This resolution passed unanimously, I might add. So to me, the most encouraging thing about this is that it is a bi-partisan effort by our Common Council, so because of this, I am confident this issue will be resolved to the benefit of everyone involved. In addition this should highlight the advantages of the new police station, and the bus way, as important components to the revitalization of our downtown.

  4. Perhaps. Mr. Mardis should contact Chief Gagliardi and the mayor who were always present and several PR people at CCSU.

This was an off shoot of a gathering of 200 angry people in Belvedere who met at Holmes School. The Task Force met for two years to discuss these same problems.

I am surprised that the mayor did not mentin this.

This is the problem with reporters leaving soon after they are hired. They get garbage for money or they are dumped for speaking the truth as they see it instead of the liberal view. There is no longer a continuity of news and no one looks back for references.

Good luck, David. You have a great idea. I am just curious what happened to the last Task Force or did the money run out.

This is what happens when the only paper in town is run by zealots who care more about pushing their own radical liberal agenda than they do about reporting the news fairly and accurately.

You mean a fair newspaper would not have ignored the arrest of a New Britain State Representative when the Hartford Courant even had color pictures of him being hauled away in handcuffs and yet never even a mention in the Herald?

No wonder they ignore the allegations that a state representative is living in Hartford and using a relative's address to qualify for his elected office in New Britain.
Didn't they do the same thing for another State Representative who was reportedly living in Manchester?

I believe that Jim Craven's thorough reporting of Mr. Gerratana living in his father's Berlin pool house while serving on the New Britain City Council was the end of Mr. Craven's career because he worked for liberals who will only report negative news about Republicans and as far as the Herald seems to be concerned, Democrats can do no wrong, no matter how much wrong they do.

Can you imagine the blistering coverage the Herald would run day after day if the Mayor was silly enough to appoint a 22 year old Republican with absolutely no qualifications that he could offer the public about the youth other than the fact that he lives at a New Britain address? With so many elected officials opting to live out of town, that might just be enough qualification, but I have little doubt it would be headlines day after day if this same individual had an "R" next to his name.

Just imagine the endless coverage if one of the Republican Aldermen was to move to Hartford and use a relative's address in New Britain so he or she could continue to stay in office?

And they wonder why they continue to lose readers?

  7. When I heard about that terrible hit and run that killed one person by Hartford Hospital last night, I was worried it might have been Pete Tercyak because he lives nearby where it happened.

    ReplyDelete
  8. When there is a perception, if not a reality that Peter Tercyak does not live in the district he serves, why can't the republican leaders call him out on it. Has anyone staked out his mother's house to determine how often he is there?

Is there not a political agency that can make a representative accountable? Why does the RTC not go after this issue?

I gave up on the voters. Ct voters have to be the most uninformed voters in the nation. Or, perhaps, we have the most state employees per capita, including retirees, of any state in the nation. They vote for personal interests only.

  9. Don't paint everyone with the same brush. I am a unionized state employee and I voted Republican all the way this time because I am tired of these Democrats destroying our economy and I am even more tired of my union forcibly taking my money against my will and donating it to democrats I do not support. Could be we just have too many liberals in this state who expect to live totally free off the rest of us who do work and pay taxes.

  10. I heard Mr. Tercyak lives in an apartment on Retreat Avenue in Hartford. That seems to be common knowledge from what I was told.

  11. To those that don't know the Town and Gown Task Force is alive and well. Our most recent meeting was held at the CCSU Student Center and the people of the Belvedere area of town were invited to discuss any of their concerns. Several residents came and the majority of the issues are the same as they have been for many years, speeding/traffic issues, loud parties, lewd behavior in their neighborhoos, etc., etc. The focus of the group has and will always be to address the concerns in the neighborhood, not trying to bring the students to the downtown to support the businesses there.
To your comment Mr.Mardis about not being political, you make it sound as if I met with you and Adlerman Sherwood together which could not be further from the truth. Notice the reaction when you meet with him is he will propose to legislate something to correct the problem instead of taking a different approach like working within the confines of an already constituted organization that has been meeting regularly for years, of which he is not a part of. The only solution to bringing more students to the area rests with the CCSU administration, bringing more classes to the ITBD building has already been done, building dormitory space downtown takes time and money, the latter of which is the hardest to find.
The answer is yes we have been working on many things with respect to the college and all one had to do was ask, not start a task force to duplicate what is already being done.

    ReplyDelete
  12. As one concerned with the CCSU student problem in the Belvedere neighborhood for many years, I have nothing but praise for Mayor Tim Stewart.

He has been front and center with the neighbors and CCSU Administrators. We could not expect more.

    As for Sherwood, GO AWAY!

Thank you Tim Stewart for correcting a wrong message. I know you were always with the residents and never missed a meeting.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Just to set the record straight, I did not meet with Mayor Stewart and Phil Sherwood at the same time. To further set the record straight, I had no intention to make it sound as though I did. There is nothing I could possibly gain in that. Far be it for me to accuse a Democrat or a Republican of meeting together to work something out.

The average New Britain citizen would just like to see problems solved, and they little or no interest in partisan rhetoric.

I just thought the idea of shuttle transportation from CCSU would address a number of problems, partying in the Belvedere neighborhood being only one of them. Also, more people and economic activity in our down town, as well as an outlet for students who may well be bored, and therefore party and raise hell as a result of it. Maybe a little more piece and quiet for the Belvedere residents, and who knows maybe even a few jobs could be created.

Never was there any intention to conflict with anyone on any level. Now I hear about a task force that has been meeting for years. Well if I am accepted, I am willing to work with anyone including a present task force, to better our city, but I guarantee you this ........ I have no intention of taking years to work this out.

The partying is never going to stop, get real. The shuttle solution won't make every problem go away, but it will help, and it is something that could be achieved in weeks. plus it should show how the bus way could help our downtown development.

However, to this date I am still waiting on the members of the task force created by the Common Council at the last meeting to be appointed. That is one of the reasons I did not want this to become political. It means it drags on forever while we have to listen to a bunch of political rhetoric. I want the support of the Common Council, but I don't want to move at a snails pace.

To anyone on the Common Council who is to appoint a committee member, please go ahead and make your appointments. If you would like us to work with the Town and Gown task force then I'm all for it, let's just get a move on. Less talk and more action is the best solution to solve problems.

  14. Once again this idiot Sherwood is talking just to hear himself speak about his own perceived self importance.

I am glad to see the people in the neighborhood are finally starting to see this elitist jerk for the liar he seems to be.

  15. Lower than whale s***November 22, 2010 at 11:06 PM

I would think that once the police department determined that Sherwood's complaint was unfounded, his credibility became lower than whale droppings with most people.

  16. I guess Sherwood is finished screwing the cops by intentionally derailing the new police station, so now it appears he is trying to "stick it" to the Belvedere neighborhood by derailing years of cooperation between the city and the university?

Why else would he be sticking his nose in where he wasn't invited in the first place?

    ReplyDelete
  17. You are either 1) incredibly naive or 2) taking some posture to pretend you are not the tool of Sherwood and company to further their usual alternative, self-centered agenda.

For those who are not familiar with Mr. Mardis (and that is probably most people) he came on the scene earlier this year at the Arts Alliance jumping in to side on a divisive issue on state grant funding with the infamous Rick Lopes.

Seems our great state legislators wanted to "advise" the Alliance on which organizations were worthy of grant funding, although there were no stipulations in the legislation. One of their targets to not receive funding was the City of NB, which I believe has been a member of the Alliance since its inception.

So Mr. Mardis went along with these political games at the Arts Alliance, now he's going to branch out into CCSU.

He doesn't want to be poltical, but has already taken an indirect swipe at the Mayor and has already "misspoke" about a meeting with the Mayor and Sherwood.

Then when called on his "mispeaking" by the Mayor he makes a sarcastic remark about it. A great way to start off on the righit foot - I see you must have taken diplomacy lessons from your mentor, Commrade Sherwood.

Mr. Mardis, don't insult our intelligence that this is not about politics as everything Sherwood and his ilk on the Council do is about politics.

Wise up - you are the company you keep.

  18. Incredibly naive, that's what I am, yes I am incredibly naive. I had an idea that I thought might help our city on a number of levels and I wanted to pursue implementing it. And I get attacked personally???

First off I never said I misspoke, because I didn't. I am just to naive to see the importance of clarifying that I met with the Mayor and Sherwood separately. I was actually naive enough to think it was a compliment to the Mayor and the Common Council for working together. And I should further clarify that the resolution passed unanimously, so I guess the entire Common Council are now "tools" of Phil Sherwood.

So, you have obviously served on the board of the Arts Alliance, and I guess feel as though someone has peed in your Cheerios over the grant issue. Of course you fail to clarify that I served on a committee with Rick Lopes, or did you just misspeak? Or do you also fail to clarify that Lisa Carver was also on that committee, and that I met with her in her office regarding the committee's course of action?

It's this simple, and try and stay with me here, I wanted the resolution to pass, so I met with the Democratic majority leader and the Republican Mayor ahead of time. If I got the Democratic Majority leader to draft the resolution that gives it the best chance to pass, ya think? But everybody be careful, because I am just sneaking in here with some radical political agenda.

Well, maybe we should clarify that I am actually a registered Republican, that is of course public record. And further clarify that I support Mayor Stewart, and his two biggest projects right now, the police station, and the bus way.

And maybe we should clarify that I was directed to this blog by my friend Alderman Lou Salvio, or that on Thursday night I sat in Vito's for over an hour with Alderman Pabon, among others, or Saturday, I hung out with Alderman Bernacki at a private party. Just so we might clarify the company I tend to keep.

I just wanted to try and help solve a problem. I don't care if there is a committee or not, or if I should bring it to an already established task force or not. Just do something and quit complaining.

And last of all, don't be so cowardly as to not use your name, when you post. But then I guess when you post embarrassing crap like you did, I'm sure you don't want anyone to know who you are.

  23. Doesn't "unfounded" mean that even the police don't believe what Sherwood said?

According to my Webster's dictionary, "unfounded" means "Not based on fact or sound observation; groundless"

  24. Why are we doing this? What sense does it make to attack a fellow Republican when the guy is just trying to something good. That discourages anybody from trying. Good luck David, I hope your successful, just be careful of Sherwood.

  27. Hey David welcome to the blogosphere, where many hide behind their anonymity to chide and poke fun at others regularly. Your political persuasion means nothing here as there are many wolves in sheeps clothing in NB. Do yourself a favor and get out of the kitchen if you cannot stand the heat! It is a daily occurrance here.

  29. Mr. Mardis -

I think thou doth protest too much. Three posts in response to one comment - give me a break. Perhaps young Sherwood's thin skin is contagious.

I don't know you, but I know one thing: I don't like name droppers. In one post, you manage to mention the Mayor, the Mayor's secretary, Rick Lopes and 4 aldermen. You appear to be trying too hard to prove you are somebody.

I don't care if you had a drink with Lou Salvio, a spotted owl or channeled an afterlife cocktail with Ronald Reagan, you will indeed be judged by your actions as well as by the company you keep. Sherwood has a habit of hiding his dirty deeds behind RINOs - just ask Leslie Jacobs.

And one more piece of advice - you'd also do well to drop Sherwood's annoying habit of reinventing the wheel like nothing happened in NB before you got here. Duplication of effort with the Town and Gown costs the City money and the Mayor is doing fine without help from the peanut gallery.

    ReplyDelete
  30. What is all this crap about the Town and Gown task force? It's nothing but a bunch of bull. I went to a couple of meetings and I couldn't take it anymore. After all this time what has it changed? Come stand in my front yard on a Thursday night and you will see. Absolutely nothing has changed.

The typical response of a politician, all talk no results.

"We'll meet and talk, and then we'll meet and talk some more, but we won't actually DO anything. But if we show our face every blue moon and pretend were doing something it will look like were on the ball."

Look Mr. Stewart, maybe this new committee won't do anything either, but don't sit there and try to take credit for do nothing task force like it's making any kind of difference. You don't live in the Belvedere neighborhood, so of course nothing is going to change.

  31. I don't know this gentleman who is dropping Sherwood's name as if it makes him somebody to know the infamous Sherwood, but in my opinion, if you lie down with dogs, you will wake up with flees, and you are admitting to lying with one of the sleaziest dogs NB has ever seen.
