Union Leader Calls For State To Follow Taxing Model That Is Proven To Fail

FRANKSMITHSAYSNB EDITORIAL:

Once again, AFL-CIO President John Olsen shot off his mouth about raising taxes to punish those evil rich people while supporting no cuts for his unionized state employees (one of his recent statements was that state employees shouldn't be punished because they didn't cause the problem).

With this latest statement, Mr. Olsen is demonstrating what an ignoramus he is.

Try learning from history Mr. Olsen.

A couple of years back, socialist Democrats in Maryland got the brilliant idea that they would balance their bloated budget by raising taxes on millionaires. One year later, the state had 1/3 less millionaires because they fled that socialist state for more conservative responsible states (probably right to work states where they could get away from unions too!).

The end result was that with the much higher tax rate, Maryland took in less revenue than they did at the lower rate.

For a misinformed person like Mr. Olsen let me explain it in a way that a 2 year old could understand.

The rich do what is called voting with their feet. When you punish them by singling them out with huge tax increases to pay for an endless socialist agenda, they move to where they are welcome--great states like Texas (right-to work state with no income taxes of any kind), South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and soon to be Wisconsin & Ohio.

What's the next issue for these unions? After that ridiculous case in Orange, I have little doubt they will soon be demanding free coffee and donuts for all state employees.

  1. Olsen is also proving himself to be a dinosaur who doesn't understand the changing times.

The best way for a Governor to become popular these days is to royally screw the unions. Take a good look at how popular Governor's Christie, Walker and Kasich are:

In NJ, the teachers union went to war. They said, "Christie is trying to kill the unions," so they tried to kill him politically. They spent millions on ads trying to take him down.

And it backfired. They didn't kill him, they made him. The more he screwed the unions the higher his approval rating skyrocketed.

As a result, Christie is now becoming the front runner to run for the White House in 2012 and it will be how he deals with the unions that will assure him a huge victory over any Democrat.

  2. since only 11% of Americans are in a union, the numbers are certainly against them!

  3. Gov. Malloy better learn where the Democrats get their money from. The unions may get made at him. But have confidence in our great CT Dem controlled legislature who will push aside any talk of union concessions with the rallying cry of tax the rich, tax the rich, the business and anyone making over 30k a year.

After all they only have to keep the big cities poverty happy and the unions. Of course when the business and jobs are gone, who will pay the taxes to pay off the unions.

  4. What The Hartford Courant didn't tell us (copied from the Danbury News-Times Newspaper ) During a question period, John Olsen, president of the state AFL-CIO, said that the state's wealthiest should take a bigger role in paying state expenses. "There are people who have made a lot of money," Olsen said. Tax the rich. They have the dough, the money, tax them.

  5. Olsen is proving to be the poster boy for why Connecticut desperately needs to become a right-to-work state.

Hey Olsen, I guess Bill O'Reilly is correct when he says your organization is on the way out. Too bad, so sad!

"The cold truth is that unions are on the way out. High tech means big changes in the workplace, and labor protections are not needed as much as they once were. What we are seeing in Wisconsin is the beginning of a new attitude toward the American worker. And there will be pain until we get things sorted out."

  7. Olsen probably doesn't know any better. I would guess that he went to one of those inferior unionized public schools where you graduate whether you can read or not.

  8. Hard as it is to believe, this idiot not only seems to have a bigger mouth than Larson, but he seems to be and even bigger dope, which would make him amazingly stupid.

  9. A dedicated shop steward was at a convention in Las Vegas and decided to check out the local brothels.

When he got to the first one, he asked the Madame," Is this a union house?" "No, I'm sorry it isn't." she replied.

"Well, if I pay you $100, what cut do the girls get?" the union man asked. "The house gets $80 and the girls get $20."

Mightily offended at such unfair dealings, the man stomped off down the street in search of a more equitable shop. His search continued a long time...

Finally he reached a brothel where the Madame said, "Why yes, this is a union house."

"And if I pay you $100, what cut do the girls get?" "The girls get $80 and the house gets $20."

"That's more like it!" the man said. He looked around the room and pointed to a stunningly attractive redhead. "I'd like her for the night."

"I'm sure you would, sir," said the Madame, gesturing to a fat sixty-year-old woman in the corner, "but Ethel here has seniority."

  10. Olsen is out of touchMarch 6, 2011 at 12:19 AM

Even the liberal editorial staff of the Herald is saying that Olsen is out of touch with reality:

"As we see it, the union leadership’s reaction to Malloy’s efforts may be historically justified but today it is, at best, short-sighted and is harming both rank-and-file workers and the state of Connecticut."

  11. Get used to it loony lefties: the party's over. No more handouts. No more goodies from those of us who pay all of the taxes. Get used to it. No amount of shooting off your fat mouth changes the fact that our state and our Federal government have been bankrupted by liberals who curried favor and stayed in power by giving away the farm. There's nothing left to give.
