To The Editor:

Some things seem never to change. Consider the current shenanigans of the NB Common Council. For 8 long years, Council Democrats have worked diligently to discredit and obstruct any positive initiatives put forth by Mayor Stewart; positive means, would benefit NB citizens and in particular, taxpayers. The Council meeting on Wednesday, 8/10/11 was a prime example. Led by a bombastic, totally irrelevant and incoherent rant by Mayor Pro Tem, Mike Trueworthy and a completely inane gesture by Ald. Larry Hermanowski to petition the Mayor to compel the COSTCO Co. to come to a special meeting of the PZ&H subcommittee of the Council and present their development plans. Hermanowski’s gesture was particularly troubling since, other than Alderman Bernacki, Hermanowski has more years of service on the Council than any currently serving member. He should know better.

First issue, rehab of former St. Thomas Aquinas High School on Kelsey St. Since the school closed many years ago, it has become an environmental problem/eyesore/blight location. The property has been sold and resold a number of times. Finally, the city took it over in foreclosure. The City has tried through numerous RFPs, to attract developers. To date, a well-known & reputable redevelopment company, Community Builders, has made only ONE viable proposal. Despite efforts by the Mayor, Community Builders, the City DMD Dept. and the East Side NRZ, certain neighborhood residents and some who live nowhere near the area have riled the residents to believe lies about the proposed development. This culminated in an ill fated, secret meeting between a few Council members and rabble-rousing residents. Result? Obstruction complete! Council Democrats kill proposal. City revenue, lost. Blight continues. Trueworthy rants that the City is incompetent in seeking developers.

Second issue, COSTCO. Readers should appreciate these facts: Mayor Stewart and the City did not approach Costco in an attempt to lure them to New Britain, COSTCO approached the City with a proposal. The proposal involved taking over a portion of the Red Nine at the Stanley Golf Course. The City considered the proposal. Costco produced a temporary rendering showing how they “might” relocate three golf holes in AW Stanley Park and assume ALL costs for the relocation. They’re NO hard and fast plans, only a suggestion. Later, after much opposition the Mayor produces a proposal for a possible, Plan B, involving the Town of Newington and the State DOT. Again, NO PLAN! So, now, what does the illustrious Hermanowski do? He produces a petition to compel the Mayor to tell COSTCO that they must come to a special meeting to “Present Their Plans.” RIDICULOUS! There are no plans, only a proposal by the City for a Zone change. The zone change would indicate to COSTCO that the City is interested in their proposal. Period! But, Hermanowski insists there are plans and, COSTCO must show them. In other words, MESSAGE TO COSTCO FROM COUNCIL DEMOCRATS; THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN NEW BRITAIN. WE’RE NOT INTERESTED IN

$ MILLIONS IN REVENUE OR HELP FOR NB TAXPAYERS! WE’RE MORE INTERESTED IN KILLING ANY POSITIVE EFFORTS OF THE REPUBLICAN MAYOR FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. “THANKS BUT NO THANKS!” WE APPRECIATE YOUR OFFER BUT WE HAVE OUR PRIORITIES. LATER!

All Democrats (no Rs) present signed the petition, even those that are positive toward Costco. Go Figure!

Lou Salvio, Alderman

  1. Lou,
It totally figures because these radical socialist Democrats have no higher priority than their zealousness to demonize anyone who is successful. Those evil rich people need to be destroyed for having more wealth than any of the Democrat's base of supporters--a group of more than half of the population that has never worked a day in their lives nor ever paid a dime in income taxes--surviving for free by bleeding the remaining population who is responsible enough to work, own their own home and actually pay taxes. These responsible people are usually called Republicans.

  2. Those "evil rich people" who have more wealth than any of the Democrat's base of supporters...
they are what is needed to make New Britain a city bustling with businesses...without their investment in the community, New Britain will not improve much. We need new businesses to employ our residents and to contribute their share in taxes.
It's beyond me why voters keep electing the same dumbocrats over and over!!

  4. On Channel 96 The Nutmeg TV's The One and Only the Larry Hermanowski pitch, with his talking political puppet voice manipulated by Mike Trueworthy, vocally stated ..."We don't know if it is Costco Plan A, B or C or if it has gotten to Z yet" ?

Why The Letter Z ...Larry ? Time for your bed time?

Z Z & ZZZZZZ= 26 and/or the sound of Z sleep or the 26th letter of the modern English alphabet as the "Z" in word Zabre - A city and industrial center of Poland.

If Larry doesn't want Costco in New Britain, maybe Larry will relocate him self to the City of Zabre in Poland.....

Larry why are the people in Poland happy? Because, the first American Black Hawk helicopters have been assembled in factory located in Mielec, Poland, that has 2,000 people working there — a 30 percent increase in employment over last year.

Yes Larry, the Black Hawk Helicopter is made by Sikorsky — you know, UTC here in Connecticut. We know they own a former Polish fighter jet plant there as well, and make parts for the jet engines in Poland that are assembled here in Connecticut.

    "So Where's The Beef - Larry ?"

  6. I'm really surprised that Costco held on this long. I would expect they will simply abandon any plans to build in New Britain and will decide on a location in a town where businesses are welcomed instead of demonized and discouraged.

  7. There are many area towns that would roll out the red carpet for Costco, so I agree it is amazing that they are putting up with all this hostility from the city council. If this is how they are treated before they even build, how do they think these radical extremists are going to treat them once the store is built?

Someone needs to show Costco executives the stories about New Britain's elected officials forming radical protests in front of Wal-Mart until the world's largest employer had enough and abandoned New Britain--taking 170 jobs with them.

Just wait until radicals on the council decide they don't like the race or ethnicity of Costco's choice for their store manager. They still don't seem to get it that this group of socialists will no doubt attempt to run this store through constant protests until the store does exactly as the socialists on the council demand.

I wonder if Costco has ever had to deal with a group of elected officials who are supposed to represent Costco as a taxpayer and instead buses in groups of ACORN style extremists to picket their store day after day until they hire the correct race or ethnic group?
