A decade ago, both New Britain and Bristol shared a veteran Congresswoman (Nancy Johnson) whose district also included Litchfield County and the Farmington Valley.
But when Connecticut lost a congressional district following the 2000 U.S. Census, because fast-growing Sun Belt States snatched it away, the required redistricting split the region into two districts.
Bristol landed in the 1st District, now represented by Democratic U.S. Rep. John Larson, while New Britain ended up in the 5th District, where Republican U.S. Rep. Nancy Johnson managed to hold on to her seat until defeated in 2006 by Democrat Carpet-Bagger & Ass-Hole Lawyer Chris Murphy. a resident of Cheshire CT.
