CHRIS POWELL: What’s really behind UConn’s price increase? - The Middletown Press (middletownpress.com)

  1. This article is misleading in that it implies that UConn professors actually teach classes. While there may be some who do actually teach their own classes, UConn has a long standing practice of judging their professors by how many books they can get published. The adage at UConn has always been "publish or perish." There are many professors who have rarely if ever stepped foot in a classroom. You would probably be shocked to learn how many professors probably have never even met their students.

Many of them are too busy writing books and travelling to conferences to be bothered with actually teaching. They simply utilize Teaching Assistants to teach their classes so that they never have to show up. Most of the TA's are foreign students here on student visas and many times don't even speak much English, but they are teaching classes. Students frequently have complained that they have to try and learn their subjects from someone who doesn't even speak much English, and when they do, their accents are usually very thick and hard to understand.

  2. Someone has to pay for a basketball coach to get a $1.5 million estimated lifetime state pension, not to mention the free health care for the rest of his life.
