NEW BRITAIN — Mayor Timothy O’Brien has raised about $24,000 toward his re-election campaign, the mayor announced Tuesday.
“I’m grateful for this great show of support. We are well ahead of where we were this time two years ago,” said O’Brien, who noted that at the end of the first quarter in 2011 his campaign had raised just $4,200.
The campaign finance report for the first quarter of this year will not be available until next week, but O’Brien said his campaign raised the money at two fundraisers over a six-week period.
“A lot of people are pleased with our work,” the mayor said. “That is why they are giving to us. They want us to continue to make the city a better place to live.”
By state law, individual contributors cannot give more than $1,000 to a political candidate in any one quarter.
To date, no one has announced an intention to run against O’Brien, who is seeking his second term as mayor. The Republicans are expected to announce a candidate for the city’s top job soon, officials said.
