One New England governor went unmentioned. Paul LePage, the Republican governor of Maine, recently vetoed a bill that would have raised the state’s current minimum wage of $7.50 an hour to $9 an hour by 2015.
“It is time to aim higher than the minimum,” LePage wrote in his veto letter. “We must create the environment for well-paying careers, to give hard-working families an opportunity to succeed. Mainers deserve more than the minimum and if we give them the opportunity, they will earn it. Let us refocus on lowering energy costs, continuing to streamline and reform regulations, and reducing our tax burden. It is time to move out of 50th place. Quite simply, it is time to put Maine people before politics.”
The hardware suppliers like Home Depot and Loews will benefit the most by the minimum wage increase as business are shuttered and they need plywood and nails to board up the windows. If you think I am kidding, just look at the result that a minimum wage increase had on San Jose California:
In San Jose, Calif., for example, which raised its wage to $10 an hour one year ago while its neighbors remained at $8, the conservative Employment Policies Institute reported harsh effects including at least 12 businesses closing.
I can't wait to start hearing the stories about the people who were being fired because the employer needs the money they used to pay that person to pay the higher wages to other people at the company. Of course, that will all be the fault of those evil rich people!
I guess he didn't want to go to Capitol Lunch even though the Courant has it listed as the #5 treasure in all of Connecticut.
