New Britain Budget Dispute Becomes Verbal Brawl - Courant.com

  1. "There was overwhelming support from people saying 'Do not neuter our schools,' and he took exception to that," said Sherwood, who predicted the school board will sue Stewart for misusing his line-item veto to cut the $1.5 million. Sherwood said the council would probably join the suit if that happens. He conceded that the council can't override Stewart's vetoes, but said it might simply transfer $1.5 million to the schools."

Now let's see if I have this accurately: Alderman Sherwood predicts that the BOE will take money it does not have and sue Mayor Stewart for misfeasance. Then Sherwood predicts that if such a ridiculous action by the BOE occurs, the Common Council will take money from the taxpayers of NB (money the City does not have) and join in a BOE suit of the Mayor. Really!
More granstanding by Phil? You bet! And which Council members will join in that suit? I guess Sherwood is counting only votes of his loyal Dem minions. He won't get any Republica votes.

  2. Mayor Stewart said:
"Throwing more money at the problem does not guarantee success," Stewart said Thursday. "In these times of fiscal hardships, raising the mill rate to increase education is like a successful operation that kills the patient."

The Mayor is completely accurate in his assessment. Throwing money at the Board of Ed that simply ends up in the pockets of union members has no correlation to the quality of education.

The best way to improve education would be to start hold teachers and school administrators accountable for a change!

  3. I guess Mrs. Sherwood can be expected to renew her reported desires to move out of town for better schools?

  4. Lou,
You missed another point, and that if the BOE and the Council spend all this money to sue the mayor, the city must provide the mayor with legal counsel and indemnify him for any actions, because he was acting in his official capacity, so in a nutshell, the BOE and the Council are going to spend taxpayer dollars to sue themselves!

Did you ever hear anything so ridiculous!

Sounds like more childish grandstanding by the little boy they appointed to lead the misfits on the council!

  5. Sounds like Sherwood has more doors to kick, since he didn't get his was again!

  6. Aren't some of these aldermen the same agitators who formed radical protests outside Walmart, driving them to move out of town and take about 150 New Britain jobs with them?

When is the public finally going to wake up to their radicalism and finally say they have done enough damage to this city?
