City Alderman express their thoughts at the League of Women Voters Meeting

As I promised that more information will be following:

I thought it would be best to follow through with some of the comments made by some of the alderman at the meeting:

1. Broad Street “Little Poland” when will the street and the sidewalks be done? Alderman Hermanowski stated that the Washington Street Project ran in adverse problems unexpectedly which delayed the laying of the new piping to Broad Street so that project could get started. He further stated that the Broad Street project could start around May of next year. He continued on “We have to watch spending. Have we cut spending? No! We keep on spending. Some of the three family and six families’ buildings taxes have gone up 180% with the landlords just passing the increases on to their tenants causing a lot of vacancies throughout town because the tenants are moving out.”

2. Alderwoman Eva Magnuszewski stated: That she has a friend that works at a local bank and that they are currently involved with 90 foreclosures.

3. Alderman Adam Platosz stated: We outsourced our Life Insurance and electricity and we are paying our electric bill to Texas at about seven million dollars and six millions for the water Department and the Mattabassett District. For the in Health we are spending thirty one million dollars. My electric bill at my residence in 1986 showed we were using 80 KW hrs. I am in the same house with no changes but my current bill runs five times higher. It happened to me. Implying why not you?

4. Alderman Phil Sherwood said He is a new face on the council but just out of the gate he was able to get a building commission and also a FOI ordnance eliminating the 50 cent charge per copy for city records the residents needs. He continued by stating that the council was able to make big changes with zoning changes for the downtown district in order to attract apartments In the center of town. He continued to state that he is very worried because many of the federal programs have been slashed because of Iraq. We have to end corporate tax loop holes and implement a progressive income tax in this state.

5. When will the Kolodney building be finished? Someone answered they currently have three tenants residing there.

6. The Majority Leader, Michael Trueworthy, talked about the state and congressional 509 program for education its not enough to what they need--- different way of feeding funds with nothing for the no child left behind program. The senior program, we can’t seem to get the administration to freeze the taxes for the fixed income seniors. You may have noticed roads being paved throughout our city as a result of a two to three year program and a 17 million dollar bond issue in order to allow a better under structure improvement to our streets and side walks by not just paving over the existing roads but rebuilding them for a longer expected life. Having a lack of state funding our financial outcome will not be so easy.

7. It was truly unfortunate that none of the republican alderman appeared for this meeting, it would have been very valuable to hear their view points on the problems the city faces.

It is my opinion that public attendance at all of the league’s interviews of all our public officials local, state, and federal informs the voters of any and all existing problems we all face together, as citizens, intelligently.

Therefore, I fervently urge that everyone should attempt to attend the league’s future venues in order to really understand the true hardships our elected officials face on our behalf.

The renewal of the Broad Street road surface and sidewalks would enhance the " Little Poland" image
that the polish community has been wishing for and hoping it to happen soon and not later

It is hard to believe that Councilman Salvio would miss an opportunity to shoot his mouth off!

How about the Mayor, what is he hiding from?

The Republican candidates did attend a meeting along with the Democratic candidates, including Republican Congressional candidate David Cappiello, but not Democratic incumbant Chris Murphy, sponsored by the New Britain Area Seniors, at the New Britain Senior Center on September 11. Many seniors were there, asking questions of the candidates...where was Mr. Smith then? He's a senior residing in New Britain, isn't he?

In answer to the "Voting Senior of New Britain" asking where I was on September 11th? I was at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington ,Ct.attending to my cancer issues. It is very hard for all elderly persons to attend daily venues as you describe that was held at the Sebior Center. I was referring to the meeting that was held by the New Britain Leaque of Women voters which was held on September 22, 2008 at the First Church of Christ on Corbin Ave. And again I repete there were no Republican New Britain Alderman in attendance to render their opinion of the problems facing New Britain as Our Democratic Alderman did. I also like to repeat that the Republican view points would have ben appreciasted by all.

Sincerly, Frank Smith

The "voting senior" must be a proud Obama supporter--attacking an elderly veteran for being absent from a forum that he might not have even been invited to on September 11th while he was receiving cancer treatments at the UCONN Health Center.

This is remarkably similar to Obama criticizing Senator McCain for not being able to type when in fact he doesn't have the full coordination of his hands from the 5 1/2 years of torture and multiple broken bones that were never set properly from when he was a prisoner of war in the service of our country.

Both attacks seem to be equally despicable.

Mr. Smith was correct for exposing that the Republicans failed to show up for a forum held by the League of Women Voters intended to offer a chance for the general public to meet ALL CANDIDATES, not just the Democrats that were responsible enough to show up.

Perhaps on election day, the voters will remember that the Republicans didn't care enough about the people to even take advantage of a chance to meet them.

Mr. Smith had a very legitimate reason for not attending the Seniors candidates meeting on Sept.11.
As for the League of Women Voters candidates forum, I for one was unaware of that meeeting. Also, many people are leery about going out at night. And there are people who believe the League of Women Voters is not bi-partisan, favoring the Democratic party. Mqybe that is why the Republicans didn't show.

If it is true that the Republicans boycotted the public forum because they believe the League of Women Voters favors the Democrats, that is a very poor excuse. Our city faces serious challenges and we need people willing to take on those challenges. It sounds childish that the Republicans would stay away because they are afraid of a few difficult questions. What might they have to hide? Maybe it is time the Republican party elected some responsible adults to the city council.

Anonymous said that the alderman are afraid to go out at night. I wasn't aware that they hold the council meetings during the day and not at night.

Maybe we could get Chief Gagliardi to assign a protection detail to the scared little Republicans so they can come out at night!!!!!!!!!!!

I could understand why Salvio would be afraid to show his face in public, but what are the rest afraid of?

As for the League of Women Voters candidates forum, I for one as a Senior Citizen was unaware of that meeting.

Also, many New Britain Senior Citizens are leery about going out at night. And many New Britain Taxpayers both men and women are working two jobs and do not have the spare time in the evening to participate in League of Women activities.

Also there are many New Britain residents who believe the League of Women Voters is high-society and is not bi-partisan, favoring the New Britain Democratic party and its plantation system of politics?

Maybe the two Republican Aldermen did not get an invitation about the League meeting?

Anonymous did not say the Republican candidates or Republicans in general were afraid to go out at night. I was referring to the general public, who also refrain from going to the Council meetings.
You should all read the posts more carefully...you might just "get it"

If Salvio is an example of what the Republican party in this town has to offer, is it any wonder why they wouldn't be invited?

maybe we can deal with Salvia on electin day
