Mayor Tim Stewart’s Passionate side,a job well done by both the Mayor and the Fire Commissioners.
The Mayor undertook a difficult fight in helping a fellow firefighter who was injured at an Oak Street blaze in 1993 when his breathing apparatus malfunctioned, causing a disabling medical condition.
The Mayor recognized that the worker’s compensation received by the injured fireman was exhausted through medical bills and needed better income in order to support his family. The mayor, against all odds, fought for increased benefits to be instituted retroactive to the date of injury. This was a long hard fight and Mayor Stewart didn’t stop with his passionate plea to anyone who would listen.
His effort paid off when the fire commission, at their Wednesday night meeting, approved granting a full annual pension doubling the annual payment to the stricken firefighter.
The mayor and I often disagree on many issues but on this item we are both on the same page and I commend the Mayor’s efforts for pursuing this matter against all odds, and thanks to the members of the fire commission for fulfilling their obligation to this stricken firefighter and his family.

This is a commendable effort on behalf of both Mayor Stewart and each and every member of the Fire Commission who voted in support of helping this individual who made such a sacrifice in the assistance of the citizens of New Britain. Someone on an earlier blog had the nerve to say that New Britain Firefighters are not heroes, and here is a perfect example of the sacrifices each and every one of them may possibly make in the line of duty.

I didn't know Obama won the election. We still have freedom of speech until Obama abolishes that and silences any opposition. You will need to clear all comments through the Obama Propaganda Minestry beginning in January!

Anonymous, that does make more sense rephrased that way, but you must admit it was very fair on Frank Smith's part to post such a positive article about the mayor when they rarely agree on anything. I think that shows what a fair minded individual he is when he is willing to acknowledge the good work of a member of the opposite party, especially when they disagree on so many other issues. Maybe if more politicians could reach across the isle like that, this city, state, and even the country wouldn't be so screwed up.

I never mentioned Frank. I agree with you - 90% of the time Frank disagrees, but at least he is man enought to give an "atta boy" when it is desrved.

Too bad our own coucil cant do that. They like to shoot things down that come from the Repub's, and then put them through as their own a short time later...

Mr. Smith, I think that guy is telling you he supports the voucher program like they currently have in Washington DC so that these parents can send their children to private school if they choose to. That is one of the promises of the McCain/Palin ticket to give all parents the same choices over education that he and Senator Obama currently have through the use of vouchers which has been very successful in Washington DC.
In answer to the anonymous that questions my position on the special teacher alleged abuse of the autistic children, at our New Britain’s Chamberlain School.
First of all I take great exception to the BOE members for allowing the board’s Superintendant of schools to not immediately place the employee on paid leave when the alleged incident became known.
I commend the concerned Parents for filling a police complaint against the action of Both the BOE Board and its emaployee.
The fact that there has been an arrest in this matter makes any further comments inappropriate since a person is innocent until proven otherwise.
