Democratic State Senator Proposes 5 Cent Tax on Your Grocery Bags: The Courant

Many people that use food stamps or other food entitlement programs probably couldn't care less about plastic bags/paper bags/cloth bags, etc. Will they be forced to pay 5 cents per bag for every one they get in a grocery outlet? Will the tax be applied in every store that uses plastic bags, e.g., clothing stores, convenience stores, etc.?

If the people using entitlement programs are exempt, who will pay for their plastic bags? Any guesses ? It will be those of us who don't use food stamps, etc.

If one orders take out food from a restaurant, will the plastic bags, STYROFOAM ang plastic containers be taxed? How about all the plastic packaging, styrofoam pieces, bubble wrap and all other types of plastic such as car bumpers?

Come on folks, do something realistic and stop the nonsense. Cut the state government workforce by 20,000. Stop the cadillac pensions and bonuses. Do we need two paid presidents for SCSU? Abolish the state universtiy system - nothing but a good old boy giveaway program.

Wow, what a nut case is the guy that proposed this tax.

The majority in control of the Connecticut General Assembly has learned nothing since the 80’s when businesses started to leave CT in droves for states that view business as a good thing and not a cow to be milked or an adversary to be subdued.

It was the General Assembly that was busily spending every dime the state brought in and then borrowing when the coffers were empty. CT is now first In terms of tax-supported debt, at $4,859 per state resident thanks to a General Assembly whose self-will started running riot decades ago when Democrats began their 30 yearlong control of both chambers.

CT now ranks 47th in Business Tax Climate, according to taxfoundation.org. Only New York, California and New Jersey rank lower than us. Sadly, CY voters continue to send Working Family Party and Union sponsored candidates to Hartford year after year. CT’s employment prospects will not brighten until its electorate finally connects the dots.

I think I finally have figured out why so many communists are here in Connecticut--especially centered around New Britain.

The weather makes them feel right at home just like in their fatherland of Russia!

Too bad their anti-business climate drove the only vodka distiller out of Hartford!

Lou apparently didn't read very carefully, it is a 5 cent tax on all bags plastic or paper simply as a way to raise more revenue for the Democrats to dole out like candy.

It has nothing to do with the environment, just another way for Democrats to seize our money for more socialist programs.

In state the size of a postage stamp, we have 3 independent systems of higher education, all doing their own thing.

New York State has a population of 20 million, a state almost 7 times the population of Connecticut and they have only one higher ed system. All state universities, colleges and community colleges are a division of SUNY.

If we were to do that here, we could eliminate a CSU Chancellor and his multi-million dollar operation, a Community College syttem Chancellor and his multi million dollar operation, 4 CSU Presidents,each making over $400,000 plus perks like state cars, and 12 community college presidents and their individual bureaucracies.

Clearly, having one higher education system under one President would save the state tens of millions of dollars, and in addition students would be free to transfer credits between the 17 individual schools, something they are limited on doing at this time.

Sounds like a "no brainer" with better customer service and huge savings to the taxpayers.

The only ones who would suffer are the political hacks all collecting these 6 figure salaries for their made up jobs.

If ones groceries use ten plastic bags checking out, it costs the customer 50 cents. Most people will say, so what? Those bags are added to the environment anyway.
And how about the plastic bags at the produce isle that the store asks you to take for produce? And those at the deli and fish counter. Does the store get charged for the plastic wrap used to prepackage meats?
Walmart has a bin where people can return used plastic bags; is there as rebate?

The questions are endless!

I would expect that soon it will be a 5 cent tax on each sheet of toilet paper?
