Growing up in New Britain and attending NB schools, as the date approached Dec. 25th., ALL students - regardless of religious faith, if in fact their family practiced one - anxiously awaited and looked forward to, “Christmas Vacation.” Nobody called it anything else. If your home had the room and your family could afford one and the decorations, you had a “Christmas Tree” under which there was a “Nativity Scene.” For me and for most of the kids I knew everybody celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ. In school we all sang Christmas Carols and made Christmas decorations and there was even a Christmas Tree in main hallway of the school. Nobody objected. All the stores downtown proudly displayed Merry Christmas greetings. Most of the stores were owned by non-Christians.
Fast forward to “modern times”; now, everything is different because some folks object to the outward public celebrations of one Christian Holiday, Christmas, especially in public places. To me, it seems that the objectors are playing “dog in the manger”, i.e., “I can’t get any enjoyment out of Christmas so I don’t want you to either.” The politically correct language nowadays calls for a “holiday tree, holiday music, a school winter vacation, holiday shopping, etc.” Imagine, these folks would have you forget Charles Dickens‘ “Christmas Carol”, Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas” all of the Christmas Carols, etc. Who would deny children hearing, “Dominic The Donkey” or, I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas? ONLY A SCROOGE WOULD DO SUCH A THING! There actually appears to be a “war” on Christianity.
I’ll end with a little story that I feel sums up my feelings and those of many. I retired from my public school teaching career many years ago. My last assignment was at Hall High School in West Hartford. Hall is located in the northern part of town, an area known locally as “the reservation.” Many of the streets have Indian names. Also of note is that a large number of Jewish families live there - there is a large population of Jewish students at Hall. Also of note, Hall is famous for its Music program. It was my last year of teaching and we were approaching the Christmas vacation. It was the last period of the day on a Friday and as was the tradition at Hall, members of the Choir roamed the hallways singing many well known Christmas Carols. Without missing a beat, one of my students remarked, “where else but at Hall High School in West Hartford could you see and hear 14 Jewish kids roaming the hallways singing Christmas Carols?” The whole class applauded, teacher included - of course they applauded the music. I rest my case, Merry Christmas everybody!!

A Gift That Keeps On Giving!
A FRANKSMITHSAYSNB EDITORIAL:
A political comment was passed on to me when referring to Mr. Sherwood as being "a gift that keeps on giving." I immediately asked if this was referring to Christmas. The reply referred to Sherwood's clowning approach to everything he does or touches to the point of telling city managers to not talk to certain newspapers.
This happens to be beyond the open policy promised by his boss Mayor O’Brien, during his campaign for the office of Mayor.
With the month of December upon us, I mistakenly misunderstood my friend to be referring to Xmas when he really was mentioning the typical shenanigans Sherwood is well known for by his being nasty, arrogant, and underhanded when he doesn’t get his way.
That mannerism was well expressed in a recent local newspaper article enough to be the main subject of discussion during the morning breakfast with some of the residents.
Mayor O’Brien by allowing this dismal attitude towards the public his office is supposed to represent will certainly make himself a one term Mayor.

The O'Brien Administration Has Done it Again.
FRANKSMITHSAYSNB EDITORIAL:
Naming a street honoring a tax scofflaw who happens to owe back taxes as reported in the tax collector's records dated Friday November 16,2012.
Alton Brooks is a nice gentleman however, his politics is very socialistic, which leads one to recall the old saying "that birds flock together."
The administration would have made a much better selection if they had considered naming the entrance road to the Pinnacle Business Park after a man that worked there, as New Britain's Housing Authority's Executive director, Mr. Arthur D'Amato.
Or after another great individual as deserving to be honored, Mr. George Springer Sr., a well known educator.

Freedom of Speech Allegedly Denied for City Employees.
FRANKSMITHSAYSNB EDITORIAL:
A gag order has been issued stopping all telephone communications by city employees instructing them to not return telephone inquiries from Robin Vinci of the New Britain City Journal including all department heads and the Mayor’s office. Dwight Blint quoted Phil Sherwood who “allegedly stated that he would be limiting his contributions from the mayor’s office and would have to see day by day if he deemed the paper worthy of comment.”
Apparently, the Mayor’s office is showing its disapproval of the paper’s content that may have offended his or Sherwood’s “likes” being a cheap attempt to control the paper’s editorial choices.
Public scrutiny being squashed through this dictator style edict should cause every New Britain citizen grave concern regarding the Constitutional freedoms of speech and the press as they related to our New Britain Gulag.

CPOA's President is Correct
FRANKSMITHSAYSNB EDITORIAL:
Mayor O'Brien states that the Reevaluation of city real estate will see lower taxes, however, Nick Mercier, the President of the New Britain's CPOA, states that the grand list will be smaller. Therefore, we will have to raise taxes or cut spending as Mercier further states.
Now Phil Sherwood, O'Brien's Deputy chief of Staff, is on the attack by claiming Mercier has it wrong again.
Nick is correct that with property values plummeting down twenty to twenty five percent, the mil rate will have to be increased or drastic spending cuts will have to occur.
One cut should be made right away when many are asking why the need for an assistant Deputy chief of staff that draws $86,000 per year--a cut the taxpayers would save happily.
Another attack that surfaced came from the Democratic party Chairperson, Mr. McNamara, citing that absentee landlords are fighting the two new ordinances and the party chairman claiming that the landlords are making outrageous lies about the ordinances and who would be effected by it.
The imposed $150 annual fee per apartment for absentee landlords will affect the tenants adversely and please note that many of the so called absentee landlords do live in the city.
The Mayor calls it a fee and not a tax since he had promised to not raise taxes, when he was campaigning but, opted to impose this fee on a selective group of taxpayers and to not all taxpayers--------Unconstitutional ???
That is why the city is facing two court injunctions costing the city's taxpayers large amounts of dollars that could have been avoided if the common council had approved two legal resolutions instead.
If Mayor O'Brien is completely sincere to do what is right for the electorate then he should order a repeal of these two adverse ordinances by the city's common council membership.

This Story is no Bull !
A DEA officer stopped at a ranch in Texas , and talked with an old rancher.
He told the rancher, "I need to inspect your ranch for illegally grown drugs."
The rancher said, "Okay , but don't go in that field over there.....", as he pointed out the location.
The DEA officer verbally exploded saying, " Mister, I have the authority of the Federal Government with me !"
Reaching into his rear pants pocket, he removed his badge and proudly displayed it to the rancher.
"See this badge?! This badge means I am allowed to go wherever I wish.... On any land !!
No questions asked or answers given!! Have I made myself clear......do you understand ?!!"
The rancher nodded politely, apologized, and went about his chores.
A short time later, the old rancher heard loud screams, looked up, and saw the DEA officer running for his life, being chased by the rancher's big Santa Gertrudis bull......
With every step the bull was gaining ground on the officer, and it seemed likely that he'd sure enough get gored before he reached safety. The officer was clearly terrified.
The rancher threw down his tools, ran to the fence and yelled at the top of his lungs.....
(I just love this part....)

State Commissioner and Former New Britain Mayor Spins Democratic Fees
The negative spin by Democrats re this issue goes on and on. In a letter to the editor today, Herald 11/20/12, [ Don DeFronzo defends fee on rental property ] former Mayor Don DeFronzo spins this issue falsely; he writes, " Earlier this year, Republican leaders on the City Council proposed a large across the board mill rate increase that would hit middle income home owners and retired seniors on fixed incomes the hardest." This is patently not true and is also disingenuous. The proposed increase was 1.5 mills. DeFronzo said further, " Majority Democrats rejected this in favor of the more targeted fee on for-profit out-of-town Landlords." Since the ordinance targets any landlord (or family member) not living in their rental property, the ordinance and associated fees targets them also. Yet another false claim by the former Mayor.
It's bad enough that O'Brien/Sherwood or their plants do this kind of spinning but it is less than genuine that a former mayor and high level state official takes part.

Mayor O'Brien Doesn't Have Laryngitis
In reading an interesting commentary that appeared in the New Britain City Journal entitled " Mayor Should Speak for Himself" dated 11-16-12 it amazingly points out that the residents and taxpayers rarely hear directly from the mayor, who they voted into office but commonly hear from his so called "ventriloquist", the Mayor's deputy chief of staff Mr. Phil Sherwood, who apparently has complete charge of the everyday business activities of the Mayor's office.
The article continues by asking "does the Mayor Have Laryngitis?" The answer is no but he does have a good ventriloquist working in his office.

Busloads Of Landlords Protest New Britain's New Licensing Fee - Courant.com
Property owner Sam Zherka of New Britain led the protest calling for citizens to vote the New Britain council out of office if they do not back down on a levy on landlords Wednesday night. "It's not right. It's not fair. It's unconstitutional," he said. Owners of rental properties and tenants protested against a proposed $150 per apartment fee on landlords in New Britain Wednesday night. (Rick Hartford, Hartford Courant / November 14, 2012)

Amazing how Phil Sherwood's Story Changes Over Time
His attack, together with Mayor O'Brien, first appeared using of the term slumlords and we need to attack the city's blight. And then after promising that we will not raise taxes we come up with a solution to charge non residential landlords a $150 fee for each apartment they own no matter where the owner may live.
Additionally, the Mayor added another tool calling it the hotspot whereby if a property gets more than a set amount of emergency calls the landlord will be fined for each call subsequently received by the emergency team of the city. Why should this be charged to the landlord and not the tenant who is making the calls?
And it doesn't end there the common council approved a list of charges or fees for building permits, etc. and that list has not been made public with the owners and the public awaiting for this list.
Reading a recent newspaper article all the aforementioned reasons for attacking the non residential landlords they are now calling it out of state landlords. Or could this change of attitude be directed towards a particular city Landlord?

Mayor O'Brien Spends Sunday at Farmington Hills Door Knocking!
City Hall sources have reported that Mayor O'Brien together with two community organizers were out at Farmington Hills this Sunday door knocking with a letter advising the tenants that their rents cannot be raised by their landlord. They apparently were advised to file complaints with the "New Fair Rent Commission".
The management of the property received 40 complaints from their tenants on the following Monday that the no solicitation and no trespassing signs were ignored and violated by Mayor O'Brien and his associates, aka, community organizers.

Editor:
The term despot once referred to high level autocratic rulers (tyrants) in ancient times, e.g., monarchs, aristocrats, etc. In today’s parlance, the term can be applied to any elected official of a municipality, state or country that exerts his or her will by absolute power derived from majority voice, i.e., in this letter, political party.
In New Britain, despotism is rampant as an inept Mayor O’Brien, his staff and a legislative body, Common Council, composed of a super majority of sycophantic Democrats.
The citizens of New Britain have life straining edicts forced on them by toadies like Sherwood, Trueworthy, DeFronzo, Bielinski, Sanchez and others. Peoples' voices are ignored. Some groups such as landlords are referred to by pejorative terms such as, absentee or slumlords. Many are accused of creating blight conditions while some of their tenants that create the damage and blight in their rental units, remain unscathed by impotent housing laws and housing courts.
Our despotic Mayor and Common Council create punitive, discriminatory ordinances against one segment of our population, landlords, to increase revenue for the city. This is just plain wrong. The city now has created a situation where the landlords and some tenants have been forced to seek a legal remedy to right this terrible wrong perpetrated by the O’Brien administration.
This legal action may end up costing the city many thousands of dollars in court costs. The brunt of this folly will become an additional burden on New Britain taxpayers. From the beginning of Mayor O’Brien’s term, the public has been given apparently specious information about budget deficits. With each deceptive budget figure, the need to create punitive measures to solve the problem grew. Pinocchio's nose grew longer and longer and landlords were singled out as responsible. What’s next for the citizens of New Britain from this Mayor? More angst? More lies? More punitive ordinances?
Thank you to the property owners’ group that will challenge Mayor O’Brien in court.

THE CITY OF NEW BRITAIN PUNISHES GOOD LANDLORDS:
With the common council passing the $150.00 per unit rental fee together with the Hotspot. the Landlords claim that these implemented legislative acts, by the City's Aldermen, decreased property values and discouraged future investors to invest in New Britain's income properties. These property owners wonder if these fees are only act one and will be raised when the city needs more income with act Two?
They also ask what is the fair Rent Commission's purpose? To stop Landlords from raising rents being within their hidden agendas? The Subsidized rents, by HUD, was not excluded from this legislation.
Never the less, the association of property owners, are blaming Mayor O'Brien and the eleven Aldermen who voted for the legislation's introduced by Alderman Emanuel Sanchez and ask that all the landlords and tenants, who may have their rents raised, to participate in Next Wednesdays Council meeting November 14 at the city hall council chambers at 7 P. M. and suggest come a little early.

Czech Republic Newspaper Speaks of Danger who Voted For OBAMA
Some people have the vocabulary to sum up things in a way that you can quickly understand them. This quote came from the Czech Republic . Someone over there has it figured out. It was translated into English from an article in the Prague newspaper.
~ Prager Zeitungon
"The danger to America is not Barack Obama, but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America . Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools, such as those who made him their president."

Head of AFRICOM Fired for Wanting to Assist Personnel in Benghazi By GerardDirect Staff - October 28, 2012
General Carter Ham relieved of duty as Commander of AFRICOM
Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta announced on Sunday that General Carter Ham Commander of GOC Africa Command (Africom), headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany has been relieved of his assignment for refusing to obey orders not to assist the US personnel in Benghazi on the night of September 11. Army General David Rodriguez has been appointed by President Obama to replace him. U.S. Africa Command is one of six unified geographic commands within the Department of Defense unified command structure.
Gen. Ham refused to take responsibility for the decision not to provide essential air coverage and other support for the beleaguered personnel at the Consulate. After the information was leaked last week that three urgent requests for support were denied to the Americans trapped in the Consulate and the Annex, President Barack Obama said on Sunday, “The minute I found out what was going on, I gave three very clear directives – Number 1, make sure that we are securing our personnel and doing whatever we need to.” According to the highly decorated, four-star General, Carter Ham, the President is lying.
The Ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens, another official, and two CIA assets and former NAVY SEALS disregarded repeated orders to stand down, and rescued several people from the burning Consulate under heavy fire. They requested assistance at least three times and were summarily denied each time. They had AQ mortars painted with laser pointers and requested a C130 attack on the target or a missile strike with a F-22 or F-35. They had laid the groundwork for a military response that would create minimum collateral damage. In return for their heroism, their urgent requests were denied and they died defending America.
According to our sources, General Ham received copies of the e-mails that had been sent to the White House from Benghazi, requesting military support at the Consulate and the Annex after the attacks began. General Ham had a rapid response unit ready to deploy and communicated that to the Pentagon. He then received the order to stand down. His response to the Pentagon was essentially that he could not do that. Within a few minutes after sending that response, his second in command told General Ham that he was relieved of his command, effective immediately.
On Saturday, October 27, Panetta confirmed that General Ham had been relieved of his assignment.

New Yorkers Please Take Notice!
Sadly, the news media keeps on talking about Gas rationing for the New Yorkers and crying that many of the stations still have no electricity.
The blame belongs to the electrician unions because some sixty or so electrical crews arrived from a southern state to work on New York's electrical problems but were returned because they were non-union electricians.
So New Yorkers don't blame the Mayor or your Governor for your problem. Blame the Electrical Union and stop your crying while you are forced to wait in the gas lines.

N.J. Governor Claims that it is not his fault that Mitt Romney lost!
We call all recall the photo op
with President Obama and the Gov. where he praised the President for doing so much for his state. Claiming his activity with President Obama was about getting things done then to care about partisanship.
Many political pundits of the area's political scene are placing Christie's move with the praising President Obama was to ensure his own re-election bid for governor in next year's New Jersey election.
Or could it really be, that Romney had decided to make him his vice president choice and then reneging, by naming Ryan for his running mate.
New Britain's Administration Flaws Through Its Common Council
It all began with young Emanuel Sanchez's resolution with his offering the $150 per apartment annual fee tied together with the Fair Rent commission that included a caveat forcing Landlords not be allowed to make more than 15% profit "because everybody has to live someplace" according to Sanchez . You may recall this vote on his resolution was lost with a 5-4 vote. And the look of dismay upon the President Pro-Tempore's, Michael Trueworthy's, face indicating his displeasure that how could this motion fail?
He was subsequently quoted in a local newspaper that he will find a solution to get this matter back onto the common council's agenda.
With his new introduction Trueworthy was successful in getting the seven votes to get his motion passed with some modifications eliminating the 15% profit issue limit but adding the license fee agreement for the landlords to execute.
I have recently blamed Young Emanuel but Trueworthy must have been the driving force behind Sanchez's efforts from the very beginning. I also indicated that Mayor O'Brien will be only a one term Mayor. I should have referred to Trueworthy would be serving his last term as well.
The City Landlords have promised a law suit and or an injunction which will create an enormous legal defense costs to the cities taxpayers for which the Democrats on the common council could care less since it's not their money since it’s the taxpayers.

As usual, the members that voted for this unwanted proposal were, Beloin-Saavedra, Carlos Pina, Judy Greco, Erin Stewart.
Voting against the motion were members Paul Carver, James Sanders, Sr., and Anthony Kane with two members of the board being absent.
Apparently, if the student's parents sign the agreement documents they will lose what may occur with medical services that will be administered to their child without the need of parental permission thereafter.

Condoms Issue is Resurrected By NB BOE Member
To all,
It is quite evident that the survey to hand out condoms indicated that the students are not concerned and that they see no problem leaving things the was they are getig condoms for free at different agencies in town.
Of the 2700 students at NBHS only 26 (1 %) saw the need.. Some people might say that 50% of those responding to the question of handing out condoms responded favorably, this is a RIDICULOUS SPIN ON REALITY.
The need is clearly not there and only in the minds of certain individuals.
None of the reports can justify handing out condoms. Only distorted claims of 95% of student being sexually active and 50 young pregnant women walking the halls of NBHS. SMOKE SMOKE.
Lets all get down to the REAL business of straightening out the finances and working to raise test scores.
ENOUGH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sadly, Mayor O'Brien and eleven Aldermen Voted for a $150 Rental Fee Per Apartment to be Paid by the Landlords When the original Proposal had Failed With a 5-4 Vote.
This action by the Common Council will lead to possible rental increases for the tenants, punish good landlords, discourage new investments in our town, and certainly will decrease values to all properties for single families including the multi families properties.
Forcing the property owners to execute a license agreement that forces them to agree be under the jurisdiction of the city's newly formed "Fair Rent Commission" and with the Mayor's spokesman Phil Sherwood warning the tenants that if your landlord attempts to raise your rents call the fair rent commission and file your complaint. Landlords will be facing a commission appointed and directed by Sherwood which I will leave to your imaginations.
