The Demise of Recreation for New Britain Citizens!

FRANKSMITHSAYSNB EDITORIAL:
With the Board of finance proposing to eliminate many of the family activities, such as, the 4th Of July fireworks, Memorial Day parade, race in the park, Walnut Hill concerts and the reduction of labor at the country club which will destroy the membership roll to this well-known club.

To add to the demise of the city’s family entertainment within this proposal was the suggestion of the elimination of the Nutmeg Games which historically brings millions of dollars to the city’s businesses and its surrounding communities.

Needless to mention, that these commissioners are appointees of the Mayor’s administration and under the control of Phil Sherwood.

Trusting the Park and recreation commission and the membership of the common council will not adhere to these recommendations but resolve with the necessity “to raise taxes”.

EAST HARTFORD'S INTEREST IN NEW BRITAIN POLITICS IS ANSWERED!

In December 2012 Adrean Rodrigues of East Hartford, CT filed a complaint with the State Elections Enforcement Commission alleging that a website is running political advertising without specifying who is paying for the ads or which political action committee is responsible for them.

When asked why he filed the complaint, Rodriguez said, “I have no further comment, the complaint speaks for itself.” So, who is Adrean Rodriguez?

Why is someone from East Hartford so concerned about New Britain politics, and political attacks to unseat New Britain Mayor Timothy O'Brien?

In connecting the political dots...we find Goodwin College located in East Hartford and David DeFronzo employed as a teacher and career service advisor at the college.

The New Britain Herald Writes All Negative Comments from City Hall

Over the past two weeks The Herald has posted a few negative articles regarding city business that sing the same old song coming from the Mayor’ office, to wit, everything “bad” is the fault of the previous administration.

 One article entitled, “Pay up” and the other, “Downgraded.” Recent research into City Commission archives provides ample evidence that claims by the City regarding blame for a loan being given to a prospective developer without a contract - and using HUD funds - were blatantly incorrect. As reported by the Herald, because of these faulty claims by the city that “accepted accounting principles” were not used, the City will have to repay HUD, $100 thousand.  Interestingly, that is the same amount of money O’Brien gave to a PR firm to do what? Was there a contract approved by the Council here? Guess!

The article entitled, “Downgraded” reports that the City’s Bond Rating was reduced by Moody’s Investors Service. Phil Sherwood, “Blame Guru” of the Mayor’s Office, once again blamed the previous administration citing “ ... several years of structurally imbalanced budgets.” I conclude that this claim is false since when I left office as a Council member in November of 2011, New Britain’s Bond Rating was the highest it had been in many years. In addition it has been determined that the practice of the City sending representatives from the Finance Dept. and the Mayor’s Office to the Investor services offices for questioning and presenting evidence, had been abandoned during O‘Brien’s tenure. Thus, Moody’y just went by what they were given by the Mayor’s Office.

As for the former Shaw’s Supermarket proposal. I think it’s a BAD idea to use this property as a CREC School. Where is the gym? Where are all required school safety measures in place? Where is the outdoor recess or playground area? Are there ample bathroom facilities? Have all health considerations been addressed? Are all academic considerations satisfied? What happens to taxes if CREC decides to buy the building after four years? Right, no more tax revenue! Too many questions, too few answers.

Shaw's Empty Store on West Main Street.

The O'Brien administration, in a local media, touted that CREC is taking the property under the existing Shaw lease therefore taxes will still be paid.

What Mayor O'Brien neglected to explain to the city's taxpayers is when this lease expires then, CREC being a non-profit entity, this property will become non-taxable.

This is allowing a backward move for the taxpayers of New Britain Mr. Mayor.

Moody's Investor's Service Downgrades City of New Britain

From A1 to A2 due outstanding Bond obligations. Moody's reasoned is that the city's tax base has a limited revenue since the mayor is insisting to not raise taxes with expenditures continuing to rise.

The Mayor's Democratic Party continues to spend & spend and of course blaming his predecessor, when in reality, he is indirectly blaming the leadership of the common council since it has been under his own party's control for many years.

CREDIT WHERE CREDIT DUE:

     Wal-Mart Picket with State Rep. Tim O'Brien- Smith Photo
FRANKSMITHSAYSNB EDITORIAL:

If O'Brien is going to take credit for things that happened before he was mayor, then he should have included how he, by following his handler and paid agitator Sherwood like a little puppet as he usually does, formed radical protests in front of the Walmart store until the owners had enough and closed their New Britain store completely. This was about 4 years ago, and still the building that once housed Walmart on Farmington Avenue sits there empty. They managed to drive this employer out of the city taking their 170 jobs and the taxes they once generated to the city with them. The parking lot that still sits there empty with weeds growing out of the pavement should be considered a monument to the monumental stupidity of these two buffoons.

This all may have happened while O'Brien was still a state representative and Sherwood was still a paid agitator for a private organization, but if he is going to take credit for things that happened before he was mayor that he had nothing whatsoever to do with and even things he opposed simply because he didn't want former mayor Stewart to get credit for those accomplishments, then he needs to take credit for the harmful things he and his personal handler did to the city too.

Where's the beef Mr. O'Brien?

Scary Obituary

In 1887 Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the
University of Edinburgh, had this to say about the fall of the
Athenian Republic some 2,000 years prior: "A democracy is always
temporary in nature; it simply cannot exirst as a permanent
form of government.
A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury.

From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse over loose fiscal policy, (which is) always followed by a dictatorship.

"The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:

From bondage to spiritual faith;

From spiritual faith to great courage;

From courage to liberty;

From liberty to abundance;

From abundance to complacency;

From complacency to apathy;

From apathy to dependence;

From dependence back into bondage."

The Obituary follows:

Born 1776, Died 2012

It doesn't hurt to read this several times.

Professor Joseph Olson of Hamline University School of Law in

St. Paul, Minnesota, points out some interesting facts concerning

the last Presidential election:

Number of States won by: Obama: 19 Romney: 29

Square miles of land won by: Obama: 580,000 Romney: 2,427,000

Population of counties won by: Obama: 127 million Romney: 143 million

Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by: Obama: 13.2 Romney: 2.1
Professor Olson adds: "In aggregate, the map of the territory Romney won was mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens of the country.

Obama territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in low income tenements and living off various forms of government welfare..."

Olson believes the United States is now somewhere betweenthe"complacency and apathy" phase of Professor Tyler's definition of democracy, with some forty percent of the nation's population already having reached the "governmental dependency" phase.

If Congress grants amnesty and citizenship to twenty million

criminal invaders called illegals - and they vote - then we can say

goodbye to the USA in fewer than five years.

If you are in favor of this, then by all means, delete this message.

If you are not, then pass this along to help everyone realize just how

much is at stake, knowing that apathy is the greatest danger to our

freedom..

A Republican Reaction To O'Brien's Address to The Common Council

O'Brien took 4300 words to do what he usually does, say nothing of substance. Of course, he said nothing about how he continues to lie to the NB public. Obviously he has given inaccurate information to the NB taxpayers so many times, he believes he's telling the truth! And the local papers keep printing the stuff/garbage.

It's difficult to see and understand how O'Brien can make the statements he does with a straight face and have the Herald report that he was interrupted by applause several times. Who applauded? All the members of the Council? Were there WFP plants in the audience?

Did O'Brien mention the purloined $16 Million or so funds from the Water Dept. reserves that he mingled with the General fund? Did he mention the questionable uses of HUD Funds for "certain" expenditures? Did he mention hiring a $100 Thousand PR fund under an emergency purchase order? Don't forget who is one of the principals in that firm who was once one of Gov. Malloy's closest advisors. Did he mention why and for what purpose he paid $Tens of thousands to the Pudlin firm, a firm that once used a current, well-known Democrat Alderman? Did he mention and as reported in The Herald the prevarications/lies about from where he got the money to hire the Community Organizer and from where the funds would come to pay for updating the City's Website?

The speech was also full of the usual garbage of how "O'Brien's initiatives" WILL bring this and that to NB and how this and that have been improved, "greatly"; as usual, long on self praise and woefully short on specifics!

The speech was full of the kind of specious claims O'Brien uses to tout his so-called accomplishments while abandoning the truth about his tenure as mayor.

Can't wait to see the usual response to my post from

"Mr. Anonymous."

Mayor O'Brien's State of the City address.

Claiming that New Britain is on its way back as reported in the Courant with claims that all city's adversities were originated by his predecessor, former Mayor Tim Stewart.

O'Brien claims in his address included the Streetscape downtown, the blight ordinances which was re-written during Stewart's administration to correct the former Alderman O'Brien's imperfect resolution, Costco which was also originated by the Stewart administration, claiming the blight resolution being his own when it all started through his predecessor's efforts, The Polymer negotiations started a good five years ago by Stewart.

Continued use of the term "I INHERATED" was a planned bashing of the his predecessor's efforts.

Why Didn't the mayor stick to the truth?

Oh yes, he would have nothing to report as being his accomplishments.

O'Brien ran with the claim he would fix things so get to work Mr. Mayor and start fixing what you promised during your election.

In short your presentation was a complete disarray including a bucket of "bull mess."

Taxpayers Pays the Hidden Bill

It is amazing that the New Britain Herald Had posted an article dated March 7th. that the City of New Britain will update its website with the city hiring a firm called CGI to complete this work citing that this project will be paid for by the National League of cities. On the very next day the Herald printed a correction that the League would not be providing this cost.

One could only assume this has become another hidden cost, being paid by the city, with the taxpayers not being informed that they are the payees

New Britain Herald Questioned Its Authenticity

Date: March 10, 2013 8:51:48 AM EDT

To: Robert Storace

Robert:

About the corrections on page 2 of today's Herald.

I don't suppose that you and The Herald will consider apologizing to NB readers of the Herald for printing yet, another blatant lie from the Sherwood/O'Brien Administration? Does this kind of shoddy writing and publishing make you and the paper accessories to lying? What a sorry situation. Does Sherwood give you this stuff and do you (pl.) print it without checking its authenticity?

Cheshire Faces Reality

Cheshire, Ct. is anticipating a tax increase of nearly 38% if the legislature approves Malloy's recommendations of eliminating the Pilot program along with elimination of the car taxes.

One can only assume that the City of New Britain faces a similar circumstance with its Mayor still promising no tax increase and we will all have to see what he plans to say at his "Mayor's State of the City Address" Wednesday Evening.

Will it be taking more funds from the Water Department?

Letter to the Editor:

I wonder, how many lives have been saved by researchers like Edward Jenner (never saw a virus), Jonas Salk and others that have worked tirelessly to discover effective treatments for life threatening diseases? When these people did their research were they “absolutely sure” that the results would prove fruitful an d benefit humanity? How has the world been changed by the ideas of pioneers like Henry Ford and Thomas Edison? Were they “absolutely sure” their ideas would benefit humanity in general? Please, answer these questions for yourself. People live longer today; every aspect of our lives has been made better by pioneers and chance takers.

Reading the comments in the on line version of the Herald regarding the neighborhood schools proposal and in today’s letter to the Herald by former Mayor, State Senator and now Commissioner Don DeFronzo reminds me that the folly of demanding “absolutes” in life is alive and well.

Where were these people when President Obama promised that nobody that made less than $200 thousand per year would see even a dime increase in their taxes? How do you like that one for an “absolute”? Where were you when Mayor O’Brien told New Britain taxpayers that Community Organizer, Brigitte Brown’s salary would be paid from HUD Funds? How about $100 thousand for a PR Firm, or another $30 thousand for the Pudlin Firm - for what I don’t know? Are taxpayers of New Britain “absolutely sure” that they know how these expenditures will improve life in the city or our city budget?

Yet, our exalted politicians such as Commissioner DeFronzo, Herald bloggers and others want Superintendent of Schools, Dr.Kelt Cooper and the BOE to give them “absolutes” and “clear” figures for how much money will be saved and how that money will be used.

At the risk of being chastised for intoning a deity, GOD HELP US!

Mayor O'brien's Blame Game!

FRANKSMITHSAYSNB EDITORIAL:

Today's Headline in the New Britain Herald cites that HUD is requesting the return of $100,000 given to the failed developer's project. According to informed city hall sources this fund was to be held in escrow until such time as the construction began.

The Arete firm was not able to obtain any bank mortgage money to support the plan and now the O'Brien administration quickly reacted with their usual blame game towards the possible Republican candidate for Mayor in next November's election, and also placing blame onto Mayor O'Brien's predecessor (once again everyone is responsible for O’Brien’s long list of failures except O’Brien himself).

Details have already emerged about the mayor’s hiring of 2 different “consultants” at a cost to the taxpayers of at least $138,000 that we know of (who knows how much more taxpayer money could possibly be involved), and the hiring of a “community organizer” (paid agitator) under false pretenses with the mayor falsely claiming that HUD was paying the entire cost for this agitator position when in fact your taxes are. Since all these expenses were expended either in secret without council approval or through false claims by the mayor, could it possibly be that the escrowed funds were used by the O'Brien administration for yet another unknown secret expense to further his radical agenda?

Given this administration’s track of record of secret back door deals benefiting their cronies, who really knows what this administration may have done with the $100,000 in federal money intended for this development. Perhaps they will even see the need to hire another paid consultant to deal with this newest mess. One thing is for certain, if they do feel the need for a public relations firm to sell their liberal spin on this latest debacle, the details and funding source for that consultant is likely to be kept secret from the public that is footing the bill for their cronyism.
