Democrat Knucklehead of the Week – Representative, Timothy O’Brien of New Britain

State Rep. Timothy O’Brien, D-New Britain, wins this award for the second time this year. O’Brien was the Democratic candidate for Mayor in New Britain last fall where his campaign highlight was when one of his legislative aides was disciplined for spending state time posting libelous comments about Mayor Tim Stewart. But this week, O’Brien broke into new ground by proposing more taxes on those property owners who have large homes. The Connecticut Mirror collected all of the hair-brained ideas by the House Commissars Friday, and O’Brien’s idea was by far the most confiscatory.

“O'Brien's proposal would levy a state property tax of $10 for every $1,000 of assessed value over $1 million - if the mansion's owner does not already pay state income taxes. For example, if a millionaire with homes in Connecticut and Florida, where there is no state income tax, claims residency there, a big tax bill still will be due back here.”

"The advantage of having a mansion tax is that you can't move a mansion to Florida," O'Brien said, adding that if a millionaire tries to sell a Connecticut mansion, only another millionaire likely could afford it.”
O’Brien actually believes his rhetoric, which is slightly more frightening that the original premise of his proposal.

House Speaker Pelosi is Pressuring

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is recommending that her colleagues to back the Health Care bill even if it threatens their re-elections and their political careers.

Hopefully, this direct order to ignore the voters' wishes by the House Speaker will cause a public up-roar that the House Democrats will not support the bill as presented.

Trusting this will be the end to the "Obamacare".

Gerry Garcia Candidate for the Secretary of State

As a candidate for the Secretary of State, Gerry Garcia presented his comments to the Democratic Town Committee meeting Thursday evening; the following are some of his comments:

Mr. Garcia, from the New the Haven area, stated a reason for his candidacy simply was that that he felt the Hispanics had no reason to go out to vote since they were not offered people for them to vote for in the last New Britain elections, and that is why he is a candidate, to give the Hispanics a reason to come out and vote.

He mentioned he had worked on the O'Brien campaign in New Britain and that the Hispanics did not come out to vote because they had nothing to vote for.

I totally disagree with his comment as to why there was a low vote result here in New Britain.

If he had worked the campaign here in New Britain, as he stated, he would have known that The Hispanics had choices under both slates with two Hispanics winning on the Democratic slate and one on the Republican slate.

Mr. Garcia stated that the reason for his candidacy is to give the Hispanics a reason to come out and vote.

They did have a reason to vote in the last election, and made their choice known by rejecting a working families party endorsed socialist candidate and instead choosing the vision of Mayor Timothy Stewart by reelecting the Mayor for his fourth term.

The House Ethics committee has found Rep. Charles Rangel D NY has broken the House rules; The news broke about 7PM tonight. 2-25-10

In response to the Herald’s glowing editorial this weekend about the amazing Alderman Sherwood, I have the following editorial comment to offer:

FRANKSMITHSAYSNB EDITORIAL:

The Herald’s ravings about how wonderful he is, comes just a few days after it was made public that Sherwood’s recent campaign for re-election is the subject of a pending complaint before the state Elections Enforcement Commission for his campaign’s alleged failure to report an estimated $1055 in campaign donations on his campaign reports—some champion of ethics!

It also comes just a short time after Alderman Sherwood announced plans to mandate through a city resolution that the city continue to pay advertising fees to the Herald for advertising public notices that no one ever reads--despite Governor Rell’s efforts to end this requirement at the state level as a way to save municipalities the funds spent on advertising these notices in print newspapers.

Governor Rell’s solution to preserve open government is to require the towns to post these notices online, but Sherwood insists that the city still be required to continue advertising in the Herald, in what has been touted by some as saving the Herald from failure—at city expense. In my view, this special editorial about Sherwood, the first one ever done on an Alderman who is simply one of fifteen Aldermen, is little more than the Herald repaying the favor for his efforts to save this floundering newspaper from failure with your tax dollars.

Then we have Sherwood’s recent comments opposing the pending contract agreement with local 992, the city firefighter’s union. Sherwood’s reason for opposing this contract, simply stated is that the mayor, who was once a firefighter, participated in the negotiations. Hopefully at election time, these firefighters will remember his opposition to their contract.

Perhaps Alderman Sherwood should consult the city charter before spouting off on a subject that he obviously knows little about? Section 5-3 of the charter identifies one of the mayor’s required duties as “to participate in negotiations with the unions representing city employees,” so if the mayor failed to perform these duties, I have little doubt that Sherwood would then be spouting off about the mayor’s failure to perform his sworn duties.

Just about a month ago, Alderman Sherwood opposed using a state grant for replacing the lights at Beehive Field. Sherwood said he didn’t think that all the money should be spent by just one department, and felt that the money should be spread around evenly among all departments, in what is easily described as a socialist “spreading of the wealth.” After there was a large outcry from the public, Sherwood recanted and supported replacing the lights.

Then there is Sherwood’s failed attempts to replace the city audit firm. Sherwood offered some wild accusations about the firm’s performance, but never offered any evidence to support his claims. The only thing that seemed clear was that Sherwood did not like this particular firm for unknown reasons, and wanted them replaced. In the end, even some members of his own party broke ranks with him and voted to continue the city’s relationship with the existing firm.

Let us not forget the controversy over the reappointment of William Candelori to be Chairman of the Mattabassett District. When it was brought to the mayor’s attention that this individual was a convicted felon, the mayor felt strongly enough about this person’s background to veto the appointment. Sherwood was quoted as saying that in his opinion, Candelori’s federal conviction for tax evasion was in the past and shouldn’t matter, despite the fact that Candelori would be in a position to manage a $10 million annual budget and an estimated $100 million expansion of the plant—all of it taxpayer funds.

It should also be noted that when the appointment was originally made by the council Democrats, Candelori was several months delinquent paying his own property taxes to the City of New Britain and that he was approximately one year delinquent in paying his 2008 property taxes—but if you believe Alderman Sherwood, Dr. Candelori’s tax problems are all in the past. Alderman Sherwood and his Democratic majority on the council overrode the mayor’s veto, like on most votes that occur on our council, on a straight partisan vote. Ironically, Candelori paid his delinquent taxes just a few days before the vote to override the mayor was held.

Also don’t forget Sherwood’s childish behavior in dealing with the proposed developers of Pinnacle Heights. When the developer, who was planning to invest $5 to $6 million in our city, was unable to identify what tenants he was planning to negotiate with, the developer even offered the explanation that he was unable to offer such information until the city turned over control of the property to him, Sherwood went on to insult him by asking “Where’s the Beef?” Sherwood’s comments were so childish, that Mayor Stewart said it was an embarrassment to the city to have someone like Sherwood representing the city.

Of course this was the second meeting to be held on the subject, because even though Sherwood had prior knowledge that the developer was going to be away on vacation and would not be able to attend his July Planning & Zoning Committee Meeting, Sherwood went ahead and held the meeting anyway. When the developer was not in attendance, as was common knowledge at least a week in advance that he wouldn’t be, Sherwood went on in his condescending way, criticizing someone who can afford to invest in a project of this magnitude, and not be able to pay someone to represent his interests at the meeting. Sherwood even suggested that the mayor should have spoke on behalf of the developer. I can only imagine the conflict Sherwood would have dreamt up on that one!

Finally let us not forget Sherwood’s comments criticizing Walmart for not employing Hispanic supervisors, and his participation with other radicals in forming protests outside their store. Who can believe the company’s claims when they deny that the radical pickets outside their store had nothing to do with their decision to abandon New Britain and layoff an estimated 120 city workers?

Does this sound like an Alderman worthy of being elevated about the other 14 Aldermen, especially with such glowing praise as bestowed upon him by the editorial board of the Herald?

You decide.

Meet and Greet with Candidate Linda McMahon in Cromwell

Linda McMahon, a candidate for U.S. Senate to fill the seat being vacated by Chris Dodd, held a meet and greet for residents of the Cromwell/Middletown area at the Crowne Plaza in Cromwell Saturday night.

Ms. McMahon was introduced by New Britain Mayor Timothy Stewart, who stated that he knew when he first met Ms. McMahon that she was a person who is concerned with the adversities happening in Washington and is a worthy candidate without any political baggage in her hip pocket. The Mayor said that she came to New Britain and supported my last campaign and I was absolutely surprised on how people immediately took a liking to her.

The Mayor continued by stating that is why he supports her, because she is a great person and knows what is needed in Washington. The Mayor said “I am glad to be here in support for her this evening and will be glad to help her in her campaign along the way.“

Ms. McMahon said that as Senator, you must represent all the people of CT, and that you must have good management and negotiation skills, to fully represent your constituency. Linda said “If our current representatives in Congress had been working for my company, they would all have been fired by now because of their poor performance.” She continued by indicating that she will not accept funding from special interests and Pac’s and as a result, will not owe anything to them. Linda said her company employs over 500 people in CT, so she has the experience to know what it takes to run a business and what it means to have to meet a payroll. With the ten percent unemployment rate nationally, Linda said she decided to run in order to make a difference in Washington.

She said that she supports term limits for Congress and that the stimulus is not working just like the TARP funding failed. She acknowledged that she originally had supported the TARP proposal after hearing the Treasurer and financial experts claiming that without Tarp, the country would collapse, and went on to acknowledge those claims have turned out to be inaccurate. Linda also explained that many of the banks have repaid the TARP money--with interest, and that she disagrees with the plans the current administration has for spending the repaid money on more programs--instead of using the payments to reduce America’s debt.

Linda went on to tell the crowd that the stimulus failed because it didn’t include money for small businesses with tax incentives which would have changed the business climate in our nation, and instead the administration is trying to force small businesses to provide health insurance to their employees. She went on to say that she believes that the current leaders in Washington do not recognize the financial risks businesses face by investing their own capital for a potential profit, and that the stimulus bill did not put money into the pockets of small businesses so they could expand their production and hire more employees—which she said could have been accomplished simply by lowering the corporate tax rates to make more cash available for businesses to invest in their own success.

She went on to explain that Washington is stifling the ability of small businesses to expand and that businesses should be free to hire the people they want and need to grow their businesses, but right now most business owners are afraid to expand—mainly because of the fears of what bureaucrats in Washington have in store for them through future increases in taxation and mandates like mandatory health care, “card check” and “cap & trade.”

Linda closed by addressing the major issues facing America, such as the way Congress just approved the massive 1.6 Trillion dollar increase in our nation’ s debt ceiling, the need to bring back industry to our nation and the need to fight the “cap & trade” proposal, and “card check”.

Linda said that as a nation, we should not spend what we do not earn and that we must have a balanced budget. Linda also spoke of the need to protect our borders because we are facing increased challenges by terrorists who want to harm us. Linda spoke of the need to change the way business is conducted in Washington and said that we do not need career politicians, but instead, people with business experience and the knowledge of how to balance a budget.

NEW BRITAIN: Sherwood Unhappy With Fire Union Negotiations: The Herald

FRANKSMITHSAYSNB EDITORIAL:

The Czar of Ethics is at it again (as reported in The Herald article above), or could he simply be trying to deflect attention from his own unethical behavior regarding potential violations of the election laws by his own political campaign--as reported in The Herald just yesterday?

His constant attacks against Mayor Stewart seem to be as common, and certainly as tiring, as those who continue to blame George W. Bush for the failure of their own liberal policies. In fact, I cannot ever recall a time when Alderman Sherwood ever acknowledged that Mayor Stewart accomplished anything positive or that he even offered a good idea--regardless of how many good things the Mayor may continue to do. Is the Mayor capable of mistakes? Aren't we all? But, day after day, all we ever hear from Alderman Sherwood is more negative attacks against anything the Mayor attempts to accomplish for this city. As I see it, Alderman Sherwood apparently believes his place in society is to throw monkey wrenches into anything positive the Mayor tries to accomplish--regardless of the negative impact his games may cause to the city, so long as he can detract from the Mayor's efforts. Unfortunately for Alderman Sherwood, the public demonstrated in the recent election that they didn't share his obviously negative opinion of our Mayor.

The public made a choice and they chose Mayor Stewart over your party's liberal candidate, whether you like it or not. GET OVER IT, Mr. Sherwood. Put the petty games aside. The people expect and deserve leadership, not more of the same old partisan bickering. This city, like the state and the nation, is facing serious challenges. The Mayor has demonstrated time and again that he is doing his best to meet those challenges. The fact that this city is in better financial condition than virtually any other city in Connecticut speaks volumes about the Mayor's accomplishments. What have you ever brought to the table besides your liberal agenda and petty partisan games to go with it? While you're out joining radical protests, Mayor Stewart is doing what we all expect him to do--running this city the best way he knows how.

Isn't it about time the Democratic leadership of the Council put a stop to the childish partisan games and started doing the job the people elected them to do?

Wouldn't that be change we can all believe in?

One thing is certain: I think it is about time you grew up!

Second Hand Smoke Was Always a Problem But Now a Third issue has Arrived!

FRANKSMITHSAYSNB EDITORIAL:

Third Hand Smoke is also very bad for you: [PNAS] The National Academy of Sciences.
When a cigarette burns , nicotine is released in the form of a vapor that collects and condenses on indoor surfaces such as walls, carpeting, drapes and furniture, where it can linger for months, said the study, which was published by the Academy.

Opening windows to air out the room while a cigarette burns does not eliminate the hazards of third hand smoke. And smoking outdoors doesn't help either, because while smoking outside the nicotine residues will stick to the smokers skin and clothing and these residues will follow this smoker back into the house permeating throughout the house as though he smoked inside.

The biggest risk is to the young children and pets who are forced to breathe the third hand smoke residue.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio Considers Run For Arizona Governor!

Sheriff Joe also points out that Maricopa County lacks a real newspaper--a problem that seems to plague the entire nation. (click the headline above to read the entire article).

Remember Lee Iacocca, the man who rescued Chrysler Corporation from its death throes? He's now 82 years old and has a new book, 'Where Have All The L

Lee Iacocca Says:
'Am I the only guy in this country who's fed up with what's happening? Where the hell is our outrage with this so called president? We should be screaming bloody murder! We've got a gang of tax cheating clueless leftists trying to steer our ship of state right over a cliff, we've got corporate gangsters stealing us blind, and we can't even run a ridiculous cash-for-clunkers program without losing $26 billion of the taxpayers' money, much less build a hybrid car. But instead of getting mad, everyone sits around and nods their heads when the politicians say, 'trust me the economy is getting better.'

Better? You've got to be kidding. This is America , not the damned 'Titanic'. I'll give you a sound bite: 'Throw all the Democrats out along with Obama!'

You might think I'm getting senile, that I've gone off my rocker, and maybe I have. But someone has to speak up. I hardly recognize this country anymore..

The most famous business leaders are not the innovators but the guys in handcuffs. While we're fiddling in Afghanistan, Iran is completing their nuclear bombs and missiles and nobody seems to know what to do. And the liberal press is waving 'pom-poms' instead of asking hard questions. That's not the promise of the 'America' my parents and yours traveled across the ocean for. I've had enough. How about you?

I'll go a step further. You can't call yourself a patriot if you're not outraged. This is a fight I'm ready and willing to have. The Biggest 'C' is Crisis! (Iacocca elaborates on nine C's of leadership, with crisis being the first.)

Leaders are made, not born. Leadership is forged in times of crisis. It's easy to sit there with a thumb up your butt and talk theory. Or send someone else's kids off to war when you've never seen a battlefield yourself. It's another thing to lead when your world comes tumbling down.

On September 11, 2001, we needed a strong leader more than any other time in our history. We needed a steady hand to guide us out of the ashes. A hell of a mess, so here's where we stand.

We're immersed in a bloody war now with no plan for winning and no plan for leaving. But our soldiers are dying daily.

We're running the biggest deficit in the history of the world, and it's getting worse every day!

We've lost the manufacturing edge to Asia, while our once-great companies are getting slaughtered by health care costs.

Gas prices are going to skyrocket again, and nobody in power has a lucid plan to open drilling to solve the problem. This country has the largest oil reserves in the WORLD, and we cannot drill for it because the politicians have been bought by the flea-hugging environmentalists.

Our schools are in a complete disaster because of the teachers’ union.

Our borders are like sieves and they want to give all illegals amnesty and free healthcare.

The middle class is being squeezed to death every day.

These are times that cry out for leadership.

But when you look around, you've got to ask: 'Where have all the leaders gone?' Where are the curious, creative communicators? Where are the people of character, courage, conviction, omnipotence, and common sense? I may be a sucker for alliteration, but I think you get the point.

Name me a leader who has a better idea for homeland security than making us take off our shoes in airports and throw away our shampoo?

We've spent billions of dollars building a huge new bureaucracy, and all we know how to do is react to things that have already happened.

Everyone's hunkering down, fingers crossed, hoping the government will make it better for them. Now, that's just crazy. Deal with life.

Name me an industry leader who is thinking creatively about how we can restore our competitive edge in manufacturing. Who would have believed that there could ever be a time when 'The Big Three' referred to Japanese car companies? How did this happen, and more important, look what Obama did about it!

Name me a government leader who can articulate a plan for paying down the debt, or solving the energy crisis, or managing the health care problem. The silence is deafening. But these are the crises that are eating away at our country and milking the middle class dry.

I have news for the Chicago gangsters in Congress. We didn't elect you to turn this country into a losing European Socialist state. What is everybody so afraid of? That some bonehead on NBC or CNN news will call them a name? Give me a break. Why don't you guys show some spine for a change?

Had Enough? Hey, I'm not trying to be the voice of gloom and doom here. I'm trying to light a fire. I'm speaking out because I have hope - I believe in America . In my lifetime, I've had the privilege of living through some of America's greatest moments. I've also experienced some of our worst crises: The 'Great Depression,' 'World War II, 'the 'Korean War,' the 'Kennedy Assassination,' the 'Vietnam War,' the 1970s oil crisis, and the struggles of recent years since 9/11.

Make your own contribution by sending this to everyone you know and care about. It's our country, folks, and it's our future. Our future is at stake!!*******************************

Political Pandering By The Democratic Council Members--- Seniors Beware!

Ask any Democrat on the Common Council if they support tax relief for senior citizens and they will gladly point to the money they annually set aside in a special account for senior tax relief. However, if you ask them to point to the plan that addresses how to distribute those funds, they will come up empty handed. Question them further and the whole story begins to unravel. Ask them how much of the funding that they have allocated that has been spent on senior tax relief and the answer will be “none.” Ask them how much of the funding allocated from last year, or the year before, has been spent on senior tax relief and again the answer will be “none.”

Be even more direct and ask them why they are putting large sums of money into an account simply to allow it to lie dormant because of their own inaction? It would be interesting to see if they even have an answer for that one, at least one they are willing to admit. The answer, however, is simple. They are pandering for senior votes. They are hoping that the senior citizens of New Britain will be naive enough to buy into their empty promises. They are all hoping that the seniors of New Britain won’t ask the tough questions about how they can get the money, or what they need to do to receive tax relief from the city.

This is just another example of a horrible mismanagement of city funds. While programs such as senior tax relief are noble gestures, they are also empty gestures. The Democrats in this town have failed to deliver on their promises of tax relief for seniors year after year, and yet each time they pull out the same tired propaganda machine to demonstrate how much they care. And who suffers? All the citizens of New Britain do, as the money set aside does nothing but accrue small amounts of interest and dust. Everyone can agree that it would be far better to have that money spent doing good for the city, keeping the pools open in the summer, helping pave roads and clean up blight, rather than just doing nothing but giving the Democrats something to campaign on.

So please show the Democrats that you are not going to accept the same old broken promises. If you have a neighbor or family member who is a senior, get them to ask the tough questions, or ask them yourselves. The Democrats will only change if they are voted out of office and realize that the public is not going to accept “business as usual” any longer.

FRANKSMITHSAYSNB EDITORIAL:

A supporter of the rail system from Waterbury through Bristol, New Britain and onto Hartford citing " he looks at issues from a regional perspective and what is best for all the communities in his district" as reported in today's Herald.

Frankly, His district does not include Waterbury or Bristol. Was a deal made for his support of the rail system vs. the busway? I hope not! As I have stated that the busway will put people to work this coming Spring and the Rail System which approximates one billion dollars in cost will possible never materialize due to a lack of funding some fifteen years from now.

As a former Mayor of New Britain he should be supporting what is an immediate benefit to the city of New Britain and its residents and that is the busway project.
