OPEN FORUM! TWELVE
Added Issues to the Beehive Lights
FRANKSMITHSAYSNB EDITORIAL:
Alderman Larry Hermanowski's answer to the athletic crowd in attendance over the Beehive lights issue "the council fully intended to approve the project."
With Alderman Phil Sherwood adding "I would be upset too after reading what I read in the newspapers, it was a radical misrepresentation."
The radical part of all this, Alderman Sherwood, is the council's attempting to place the blame everywhere else but where it really belongs---- to the Radical Democratic side of the council membership.

Hometown Grille's first Anniversary, East Berlin, Ct.
With the Hard economic times surrounding the restaurant industry such as the closing of many restaurants throughout our state, Mr. Michael Vince of Prospect, Ct. stated it is hard to survive but "I am looking forward to next year." Before purchasing this location Mr. Vince brought with him twenty five years of experience in this business.
He approached this venture after knowing that two former owners failed at this location also known as the route 72 diner. He continued by citing that "the political arena has done little in helping out small business ventures such as mine."
I arrived Sunday morning, shortly after 11 AM, finding the parking lot full with approximately 110 patrons enjoying their breakfasts inside.
With four waitresses serving their guests, adding the kitchen help required to handle the many orders from their customers, this business is bent on survival and will not accept defeat.
I was a customer of the old Route 72 Diner, but I had never experienced having to look for an empty seat like I did this morning.
I wish Mr. Vince and his staff a very happy anniversary and success for many years to come.

Linda McMahon is ready for all on comers
FRANKSMITHSAYSNB EDITORIAL:
In Linda McMahon's fight for the nomination against U.S. Rep. Rob Simmons for the Republican nomination, it is apparent she will use his past votes against him like his vote proposing approval of partial birth abortions on three separate occasions. Then there is his support for Card Check--the elimination of a secret ballot for union elections--a measure that will empower union thugs to coerce every employee to vote for the union or face the implied consequences.
After her victory in the primary, McMahon will take on Connecticut's Attorney General, Richard Blumenthal, all the way to the floor mat for a count of three.
Blumenthal cited he has taken notice of the results of the Massachusetts election but that doesn't prepare him for his first wrestling match in the ring with LINDA.
Blumenthal addresses lessons leaned from Massachusetts
The lesson of Massachusetts is the need to listen to voters and to campaign aggressively -- and I will continue to do both. This result shows people are angry and frustrated with Washington D.C. and they should be.
I understand that people want change in Washington. I will be going to every corner of Connecticut listening to people and showing that I will fight for them tenaciously and tirelessly everyday and working hard to earn their support and trust as I have done as Attorney General.

The Hartford/New Britain Busway Project & The Waterbury to New Britain Commuter Rail Line.
FRANKSMITHSAYSNB EDITORIAL:
Both proposals have merit however the Busway project has been already funded and slated to be underway this spring. With the downtown redevelopment project currently in progress and if the planning for the busway is discontinued that would serve as a death warrant for attracting any future businesses to the downtown area, and possibly, other city areas as well.
Reviewing the many articles that appeared in our local newspapers it appears that the commuter Rail system would require at least a period of ten years or more costing a half billion dollars to complete.
As I have indicated both proposals offers commuters travel needs and both operations should be implemented but the busway proposal that has spent fifty million dollars for design and purchasing of needed properties should not be discontinued to await the rail plan that may never materialize because of a lack funded.
Therefore, please support the busway plan without hesitation.

THE BEEHIVE LIGHTS ISSUE RECONSIDERED!
Chairman Giantonio of the parks and Recreation in Support of reconsideration
After listening to nine speakers who addressed the council in support of replacement of the lights, the council voted to reconsider their vote, but a statement by President Pro Tempore Trueworthy blamed the press for erroneously reporting that the Beehive lights had been voted out at the last meeting, when in reality the council , he said, had voted for the Martha Hart baseball field improvements. It must be noted that Alderman Trueworthy did express, at the last council meeting, it was unfair for these LOCIP funds to go to one department of the city, The parks Department, without sharing them with the rest of the city departments--departments that didn't even bother to apply for the funds.
With all that being said, the council passed the reconsideration motion to approve the installation of new lights at Beehive.

THE BEEHIVE LIGHTS
FRANKSMITHSAYSNB EDITORIAL:
AT THE LAST council meeting the democratic leadership didn't like to see the parks and recreation department get all of the LOCIP funds by their insisting that the "wealth should be spread around" by the money being equally shared with all the other city departments.
"Sharing the wealth" is a mantra of another Democrat's failed policies.
Yes indeed, sharing the wealth is turning our city into a socialist disaster.
After Alderwoman Shirley Black introduced the resolution and with the charade played out by both Trueworthy and Sherwood, the rest of the Democrats voted against their own resolution! A great show but, the admittance price is too costly for the taxpayers.
The lights need replacement and by sharing the wealth with all the other departments, the safety issues continue to befall the Beehive.
Maybe a motion of rescission should be introduced at Wednesday's council meeting in order to rescind the outcome. How many additional stadium visitors need to be injured due to the poor lighting before these Democrats awake from their slumber?

Apology to Mr. James Craven Staff Writer of the New Britain Herald
In my recent story "The Herald Wrong With the Capacity of Police Commissioners" I incorrectly attributed the article to reporter James Craven instead of the actual author of the story, reporter Lisa Backus. I was correct (as supported by the state statute cited in my article) in pointing out the misstatement in the article reporting the position of Police Commissioner as being "largely a ceremonial function," but did accidentally attribute this missinformation to the wrong reporter. James Craven has recently demonstrated his ability for investigative reporting, so I should have realized that was not the type of error normally found in his stories. I apologize to Mr. Craven for this mistake as I set the record straight.

Reader Sees Ray of Hope for Common Council
Letter to the Editor, New Britain Herald
It was a pleasure to read James Craven's (January 8) article about last week's meeting of the New Britain Common Council's Administration, Finance & Law Subcommittee. The persistent effort of Majority Leader Phil Sherwood and his three lackeys to oust the City's auditing firm – even if it cost $250,000 and exposed the City to a lawsuit – was stopped in its tracks by a bi-partisan group of two Democrats and three Republicans.
If Mr. Sherwood had the best interests of the City in mind he had a strange way of showing it at the committee meeting, ignoring the consequences of his actions while posturing about the sole authority of "this body" to choose the auditor. Fortunately cooler heads prevailed. The dissenting group included all three newly elected alderpersons on the subcommittee, which may indicate a shift toward rational decision-making at Council and subcommittee meetings after years of partisan bickering. I certainly hope so!

The Herald Wrong with the Capacity of Police Commissioners
In an article written by Lisa Backus of the New Britain Herald on January 14, 2010 whereby he states " The Police commission is an advisory board to the police chief." And he went by saying " It serves largely as a ceremonial function and does not administrate the day to day functions of the police department, according to the City Charter.
The City Charter does not supersede the State Statute Sec 7-276 Powers of the Commissioners:
Sec. 7-276. Powers of commissioners. Such boards shall have all of the powers given by the general statutes to boards of police commissioners, shall have general management and supervision of the police department of such town and of the property and equipment used in connection therewith, shall make all needful regulations for the government thereof not contrary to law and may prescribe suitable penalties for the violation of any such regulation, including suspension or removal from office of any officer or member of such police department. Such board shall have the sole power of appointment, promotion and removal of the officers and members of such police department, under such regulations as it adopts for the purpose, and such appointees shall hold office during good behavior and until removed for cause upon written charges and after hearing. The members of such police department shall have all such authority with respect to the service of criminal process and the enforcement of the criminal laws as is vested by the general statutes in police officers and constables.
(1949 Rev., S. 659.)
I hope Ms. Backus when you read this state statute you will admit to your error made with your comments .

Wednesday Night's Council Meeting About The BEEHIVE!
This show, led by our two Democratic leaders, Aldermen Sherwood & Trueworthy with their efforts to stymie the outcome because they felt it was unfair for the Parks and Recreation Department for having the fortitude to keep applying for the LOCIP funds, year after year, and other departments did not. Both Aldermen expressed that it would be best to deny this request because it would be unfair to not share these funds with other city departments.
I was totally shocked to watch the Council's P&R Liaison, Alderwomen Shirley Black introduce this worthy motion that would help the sports minded children of our city, and then turn around and vote against it.
The council meetings are shown on channel 96 the following night but what is not on film, which is extremely the most important and is missing, is what truly happens during the Democratic caucus.
In Spite of Mr. DeMaio's plea, Ms. Black proposed it and then voted against it along with her fellow Democratic council members Cruz, Platosz, Centeno, and Trueworthy which forced the proposal to fail.

Scott Whipple's column in the 1/9/10, New Britain Herald, [Business leaders:"State headed down wrong path"] ,a must reading. Nowhere in Connecticut are the premises of this column more true than right here in the city of New Britain. A quote from the late Paul Tsongas, "Brennan said Paul Tsongas, the late Democratic Senator from Massachusetts, summed up the situation when he stated, “You can’t be pro-jobs and anti-business.”
Tell that to the Democrat controlled by Sherwood and Trueworthy of the New Britain Common Council. Phil Sherwood and his Council followers are determined to block any effort forwarded by Mayor Tim Stewart in New Britain to bring New Britain out of the economic doldrums. They insult potential investors, falsely accuse the City's auditors of fudging figures and saying that the City hid a $10 million deficit in its budgets. Why? Because they are more interested in partisan Democrat politics than they are in the well being of New Britain and its residents.
Another quote, “Businesses are concerned about the growing anti-business sentiment in the legislature and have lost confidence in our lawmakers. " with ability to take actions that will stimulate the economy and increase business investment,” said Joe Brennan, CBIA’s senior vice president of public policy. “Only through investment can our companies remain competitive and keep our residents employed.”

Minority Leader Salvio Speaks Out
1/11/10
To the Editor,
Results of the 11/3/09 Municipal Election ended with the election of 11 Democrats and 4 Republicans. Those results alone are not surprising. What was surprising was the margin of victory especially considering the history of proven Democratic ethical, professional and potentially criminal acts committed by some Council Democrats the previous two years.
Then, the Ds oust Alderman Trueworthy from his position as Majority Leader and vote in known troublemaker, Phil Sherwood to assume that position. Trueworthy is voted in as Mayor Pro Tem,a horrible joke and slap in the face to the people of New Britain.
The Ds professed a new era of cooperation with the Stewart administration to move New Britain forward. The rest was predicted: with their 11 – 4 majority, the Ds then stacked each subcommittee with a D majority and elected Ds to all chair and vice chair positions.
Then, in their first attempt at obstructing Mayor Stewart, new Majority Leader Sherwood and his D leadership cabal attempt to dismiss/fire the city’s independent auditor. They offer only as a reason, “there should be a new set of eyes auditing the city’s books.” This move is led by the quartet of Aldermen, Sherwood, Trueworthy, Catanzaro and Hermanowski. This group offers not a shred of evidence of any wrong doing by the city’s auditor, but only say in their infinite stupidity, “there should be a new set of eyes.” I offer the following quote from Alderman Sherwood: “If it is sufficiently proven to this body that we have entered into a contract for numerous years with Blum Shapiro and we can’t back out, fine. Then this might sound widely irresponsible but cut them the check. I want a new set of eyes looking at our books.” Imagine that! Sherwood has set himself up as the supreme dispenser of taxpayer monies! What unabashed conceit.
What this D cabal didn’t count on is that a couple of their Democratic colleagues would decide to think for themselves. The attempt failed.
Watch for it, this Sherwood led quartet of malcontents is not finished. I predict that in the next two years, the “Sherwood Quartet/Cabal” will continue in their quest to obstruct every positive move by the Stewart Administration to move New Britain forward to a positive future. This quartet is not interested in voting in the best interests of the citizens on New Britain, rather they are only interested in themselves and partisan (D) politics.

My Friend,
On Tuesday, January 19, voters in Massachusetts will head to the polls to elect a new United States Senator. I am proud to be strongly supporting our Republican nominee, Scott Brown, who is rapidly closing in the polls. Scott and his campaign have made incredible gains in a state that is solidly democratic; his victory will be a huge upset to the Obama machine and carry on the momentum of our wins in Virginia and New Jersey last November.
A Scott Brown victory is also important as it will mean the Democrats will lose their 60 seat grip on the United States Senate. For anyone who has watched the recent health care debate, you know how powerful that 60th seat has been for Barack Obama and Harry Reid. Scott Brown will magnify our party's voice in the Senate in ways that no other single seat can do today.
Scott Brown needs our help today to make history and that is why I'm emailing supporters throughout New England asking you to consider volunteering during the final days to help Scott turn out the vote. They are looking for volunteers to help make phone calls and knock on doors in the final 5 days of the campaign.
If you are available to volunteer from Friday, January 15th through January 19th please follow this link to fill out the online application the Brown campaign has provided. They will then contact you with further information. The campaign will provide volunteers who are willing to help with these essential GOTV efforts with food and lodging for Jan 15th through the 20th.
For anyone willing to help who cannot travel to Massachusetts, the campaign has put together an online phone bank, giving us the ability to make calls from our homes.
I cannot overstate the importance that Scott's election will have on our ability to impact the Obama agenda in the Senate. I'm proud to be supporting Scott, excited about his momentum and hopeful you will consider helping him reach the finish line victoriously.
Sincerely,
John McCain

Palin signs on with Fox News
By Howard Kurtz
Sarah Palin, who regularly rips the media, is becoming a television pundit at a place where she's likely to feel at home.
A Fox News executive says the network will shortly announce that the former vice-presidential nominee is signing on as a contributor.
Palin, who resigned as governor of Alaska last summer, will appear as a commentator on various Fox shows. She will also host an occasional program that will examine inspirational tales involving ordinary Americans.
Palin will join Mike Huckabee as a Fox contributor who was also involved in the 2008 campaign. The exposure can only help Palin if she decides to pursue a 2012 presidential bid.
At the moment, Palin makes pronouncements mainly through her Facebook page. The Fox connection would give her a platform on the nation's top-rated cable news channel.
Palin is extremely popular with her conservative base, which has fueled the sales of her best-selling memoir. But she is a divisive political figure who not only draws the ire of liberals but some Republicans, including staffers who deal with her during her run as John McCain's running mate. Steve Schmidt, a top McCain strategist, said on "60 Minutes" last night that "there were numerous instances that she said things that were -- that were not accurate that ultimately, the campaign had to deal with."
Hiring Palin could further boost the popularity of Rupert Murdoch's network among conservative viewers. The network already employs former Bush White House aide Karl Rove and former House speaker Newt Gingrich as highly visible commentators.
