My congratulations to the New Britain Council members for their recent appointment of Mr. John Valengavich to the Mattabassett Regional Sewer District in Cromwell Ct.
John is a civil engineer who retired from the state Department of Transportation. I have known John for a number of years and I believe his frugal methods of operation will certainly have him looking into the denitrification proposal. The cost of this project was recently raised to 81.4 million dollars, as Mr. Brian Armet, the executive director of the district was recently quoting in a local newspaper.
This enormous sum of money has to be shared by New Britain’s taxpayers at an approximate 70% rate (roughly $57 million).
I have frequently stated publicly that the elimination in accepting sludge from non-member towns would reduce this cost enormously. To continue to accept this outside sludge will be forcing the taxpayers of New Britain to foot the bill for several other towns’ waste.
Additionally, the board requested that a review be done to evaluate the potential cost savings that would result from shipping all of the district’s own sludge to the MDC Hartford plant. This badly needed review never happened.
I wish John the best of luck and know he will utilize his expertise in making the best decisions he can for the good of the three member towns.

I agree with the gentleman who asked who is going to pay for this? What no one is even considering is that after they bond out this project, the total bill with interest would amount to an estimated 240 million dollars overall once the annual interest is figured in over a 20 year period. I am very concerned about the impact that these astounding figures would do to the taxes in my town. With Mattabassett, the world seems to center around New Britain, but there are two other towns who will be negatively impacted by this massive expenditure.

Now I know they are crazy if they think we can afford to pay the higher taxes for this. I pay too much in taxes for my little house on Ellis Street now.

Maybe if enough of us try, we could get the mayor to come off the golf course long enough to do something to fix this before we all go broke paying higher taxes.

Does anyone have the phone number for the golf course so we can actually reach the mayor more than one day a month when he holds his office hours?
maybe we could treat him the way he treated the fire chief and call him at home at 3 AM to yell at him.
Good idea. Is his number listed in the book or do we have to call his office where he ignores the public as if we don't exist?

Thanks, I will look up the number and give him a call at home. I would have suggested calling Salvio too, but that would be a wasted phone call since he is a member of the council's nothing minority party.

Mrs. Paula Mele of New Britain, Ct. was appointed to the district board of directors and she bring to the district her background experience in the medical field including a Bio Chemical background which as been completely lacking on the board of directors make up over the past years.
