League of Women Debate

During the League of Women Voters debate a one liner by candidate Don Naples was a home run out of the ball park when he commented "transparency is needed with a voice of reason and not the partisan sheep who vote whatever the mayor wants."
During the Mayoral debate Mayor O'Brien attempted to indicate that "New Britain needs the Blue Back Square and the Farmington Mall in order to improve New Britain." But, even after Erin Stewart waving her car tax bill for all us to see, citing "that her car value went down but her tax increased $100.00 this year."
The Mayor during his closing statement stated "after becoming mayor resolving all the problems he inherited he was able to not increase taxes."
On my way out of the building a local business man stated to me.   " The nerve of this guy saying he did not increase taxes."
I politely replied to him "that his check book lied to him."

Signage has become a critical issue in the Mayoral Campaign.

Arriving to the Cracovia Restaurant today and noticing that Erin Stewart's election sign had been taken down.

 When asking why?

I was only told that Mayor O'Brien together with his friend David demanded that the sign be taken down.

Would it not have been more "palpable" if the Mayor had simply requested that his sign be placed in another front window of the restaurant?

OBAMACARE WILL DESTROY THE VERY HEALTH AND WELLBEING OF OUR MEMBERS ALONG WITH MILLIONS OF OTHER HARDWORKING AMERICANS:

LETTER TO PELOSI & REID FROM: TEAMSTERS GENERAL PRESIDENT JAMES HOFFA, D TAYLOR, UNITE-HERE PRESIDENT & JOSEPH HANSEN, UFCW INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT

Dear Leader Reid and Leader Pelosi:
When you and the President sought our support for the Affordable Care Act (ACA), you pledged that if we liked the health plans we have now, we could keep them. Sadly, that promise is under threat. Right now, unless you and the Obama Administration enact an equitable fix, the ACA will shatter not only our hard-earned health benefits, but destroy the foundation of the 40 hour work week that is the backbone of the American middle class.
Like millions of other Americans, our members are front-line workers in the American economy. We have been strong supporters of the notion that all Americans should have access to quality, affordable health care. We have also been strong supporters of you. In campaign after campaign we have put boots on the ground, gone door-to-door to get out the vote, run phone banks and raised money to secure this vision. Now this vision has come back to haunt us.

Since the ACA was enacted, we have been bringing our deep concerns to the Administration, seeking reasonable regulatory interpretations to the statute that would help prevent the destruction of non-profit health plans. As you both know first-hand, our persuasive arguments have been disregarded and met with a stone wall by the White House and the pertinent agencies. This is especially stinging because other stakeholders have repeatedly received successful interpretations for their respective grievances. Most disconcerting of course is last week’s huge accommodation for the employer community—extending the statutorily mandated “December 31, 2013” deadline for the employer mandate and penalties.
Time is running out: Congress wrote this law; we voted for you. We have a problem; you need to fix it. The unintended consequences of the ACA are severe. Perverse incentives are already creating nightmare scenarios:
First, the law creates an incentive for employers to keep employees’ work hours below 30 hours a week. Numerous employers have begun to cut workers’ hours to avoid this obligation, and many of them are doing so openly. The impact is two-fold: fewer hours means less pay while also losing our current health benefits.,

Second, millions of Americans are covered by non-profit health insurance plans like the ones in which most of our members participate. These non-profit plans are governed jointly by unions and companies under the Taft-Hartley Act. Our health plans have been built over decades by working men and women. Under the ACA as interpreted by the Administration, our employees will treated differently and not be eligible for subsidies afforded other citizens. As such, many employees will be relegated to second-class status and shut out of the help the law offers to for-profit insurance plans.
And finally, even though non-profit plans like ours won’t receive the same subsidies as for-profit plans, they’ll be taxed to pay for those subsidies. Taken together, these restrictions will make non-profit plans like ours unsustainable, and will undermine the health-care market of viable alternatives to the big health insurance companies.
On behalf of the millions of working men and women we represent and the families they support, we can no longer stand silent in the face of elements of the Affordable Care Act that will destroy the very health and wellbeing of our members along with millions of other hardworking Americans.
We believe that there are common-sense corrections that can be made within the existing statute that will allow our members to continue to keep their current health plans and benefits just as you and the President pledged. Unless changes are made, however, that promise is hollow.
We continue to stand behind real health care reform, but the law as it stands will hurt millions of Americans including the members of our respective unions.
We are looking to you to make sure these changes are made.

The joke that is the renewable fuel standard

CPOA calls budget surplus “pure hogwash”

September 26, 2013, New Britain, CT -  Not mincing words the President of the Citizens Property Owners Association of New Britain, Nick Mercier, called the alleged $2.4 million “surplus” claimed by the O’Brien administration “pure hogwash.” “He was able to create a ‘surplus’ by essentially stealing from the past.” Mercier said.

Mercier claims that the Mayor is engaging in the age old practice of moving money to make the city look better off than it is. Citing a resolution passed April this year where the city took $6.6 million from the city’s self insurance fund to pay debts in the 2013 municipal budget the Mercier said the Mayor was stealing from Peter to pay Paul. “Earlier this year we were told that we were under budget, so the Mayor transferred around $6.5 million into the general fund from the self insurance fund. Now, a few months later, he has realized there is $2.9 million dollars left from that money and he’s putting it back.”

“That would be like me taking $20 from my kid’s piggy bank, spending half of it, and then claiming I had a $10 surplus and using it to pay my kid’s allowance.” Mercier added. The CPOA President, who has been highly critical of the Mayor’s budget practices for the past several years, says this claim just takes the cake. “I find it extremely suspicious that throughout the past 2 years the administration has been speaking of deficits every chance they get and then suddenly, less than a month before an election, they announce a surplus.”

Mercier said he plans on requesting a detailed report of the city’s financial state as well as the Mayor’s claims for an independent analysis.

REMEMBER GENERAL ELECTRIC (GE) ???

Keep your eye on Waukesha, Wisconsin. Their biggest employer just moved out. Thank you, Jeff Immelt, you're a "real" American, giving Barack your Best !!

It's official! General Electric is in the process of moving its 115-year-old X-Ray Division from Waukesha, Wis. to Beijing, China.

In addition to moving it's divisional headquarters, the company will invest more than $2 billion in China and train more than 65 engineers and create six new research centers.

This is the same GE that made $5.1 billion in the United States last year but paid no US taxes - the same company that employs more people overseas than it does in the United States. So let's get this straight:

Obama appointed GE Chairman Jeff Immelt to head his commission on new job creation (job czar). Immelt was supposed to help create more than a million new jobs in three years. I guess Obama forgot to tell him in which country he was supposed to create those jobs.

If this doesn't show you the total lack of leadership of this President, I don't know what does.

Please pass this on to others and think twice before buying any GE product !!

. Remarks that O'Brien has the election locked up is "PURE BULL MESS"

To the Poster of the item below:

"The fact Erin and Frank are talking lawn signs is a great indication that Team O'Brien has this locked up"
.

Team O'Brien is completely worried.  That is why he refused meet for the debate with the CPOA of New Britain.  When posting "signage" it was not about lawn signs.   You must be an ignorant Democrat to come up with the twist of the English language.

CPOA is refused debate by Mayor O'BRIEN:

FRANKSMITHSAYSNB EDITORIAL:

Many citizens are saying that the Mayor is afraid to meet his opponent Erin Stewart at the Citizen Property Owners Association of New Britain.

This forum would allow the attendees to ask whatever questions they chose to from each candidate not like those questions that are monitored by the League of  Women Voters and their sponsor, the New Britain Herald.

I have attended many of these, so called debates by the League of Women Voters, only to watch my written question disposed of into the waste basket.

The CPOA is a taxpayers organization that was started in 1924 and have interrogated many prior mayors over the years with their questions.

Now Mayor O'Brien, who refuses to attend,  when he knows will be faced with questions such as his extreme spending habits by his administration, and of course his bonding of $70,000,000  of the taxpayers' dollars.

Since the Mayor is opposed to answering or responding to questions by the members of this long established "tax watch dog" the time has arrived for this organization  to respond to his rejection by voting him out of office come November 2013.

Note:  Mr. Smith is a Board member of the CPOA and serves as its treasurer.

Former Defense Secretaries Scolds Obama On Syria

Two former defense secretaries who served under President Barack Obama have leveled surprisingly harsh criticism at the administration's handling of the Syrian crisis.

Robert Gates and Leon Panetta appeared jointly at a forum at Southern Methodist University in Dallas on Tuesday, and criticized Obama for asking Congress to authorize military force in response to a chemical weapons attack the United States blames on Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime.

Gates said Obama's proposed attack was a mistake, while Panetta asserted it was a mistake not to go forward with a strike on Syria, The New York Times reported.

Gates, who served under George Bush and remained in office under Obama until July 2011, said: "My bottom line is that I believe that to blow a bunch of stuff up over a couple of days, to underscore or validate a point or a principle, is not a strategy.

"If we launch a military attack, in the eyes of a lot of people we become the villain instead of Assad."

Panetta, who replaced Gates and left office in February, said Obama should have followed through on his pledge to act if Syria used chemical weapons: "When the president of the United States draws a red line, the credibility of this country is dependent on him backing up his word."

Panetta said it was wrong to "subcontract" the decision to Congress, stating that the president "has to retain the responsibility and the authority on this issue."

Gates agreed it was wrong to seek authorization from Congress, because if Congress rebuffed him "it would weaken him. It would weaken us in the eyes of our allies, as well as our adversaries around the world."

Gates also said he is skeptical about Russian President Vladimir Putin's efforts to work out a deal with Syria to remove its chemical weapons, and about Syria's intentions to disarm.

Russia insists that rebels carried out the chemical weapons attack, which the United States says killed more than 1,400 people. But the advocacy group Human Rights Watch said on Tuesday that rocket trajectories detailed in a United Nations report suggested the poison gas shells had been fired from a base belonging to the Republican Guard, run by Assad's brother Maher.

Asked if the West should trust Putin, Gates said: "Are you kidding me?"

Blight Legality Becomes Topic

During the Connecticut alliance meeting held at the Whinstone Restaurant last evening, with all the speeches given by the dignitaries finally, Erin Stewart was introduced to the crowd as the candidate for mayor for the city of New Britain.

She introduced her running mates stating that they are a mixture of the community, Democrats, Republicans, Unaffiliated, and Independents.  During the evening she had heard many comments referring to Mayor O'Brien's Blight law that has no legal merit for enforcement.   Therefore, Erin took advantage of citing her feelings on the blight issue by her "saying the only blight in the city of New Britain is at City Hall."

RENTER BEWARE IF YOUR RE-ELECT O'BRIEN'S SLATE!

This Election Does Matter to You WHY YOUR RENT WILL INCREASE IF TIMOTHY O'BRIEN IS RE-ELECTED

Mayor Timothy O'Brien has passed several new ordinances and fees that will increase
costs for landlords who provide affordable housing for you and your neighbors.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU: When housing expenses go up, the rent goes up; it's as simple as that! Your
landlord will pass along their increased costs in the form of increased rent and
nobody can afford rent increases right now.
Timothy O'Brien has told you that policies are anti-blight ordinances, NOT TRUE!
If this were true, these fees would only be collected from blighted properties, not
from all landlords who don't live in their rental buildings. You don't live in a
blighted building, so why should your landlord have to pass these increased costs
on to you? This is a money grab that will be paid by the tenants of New Britain.
Did you know that the Mayor made a sweetheart deal on his licensing tax with
the biggest out-of-town landlord represented by a lawyer who is a political friend
of the Mayors; they will pay less per unit than a 3-family landlord. Why?
Your life may be at risk because of O'Brien's 9-1-1 fine ... and the city expects to
collect 2 million dollars this year from it, it's in the city budget! Why would any
sane person want to fine someone for calling for help?
WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT:

On November 5th, you can vote to remove the Mayor that created these ordinances
and help to keep housing affordable in New Britain. Your landlord should not be forced
to raise your rent because Timothy O'Brien has increased the cost of providing rental
housing to
New Britain residents.

The Adverse Political Scene in New Britain

FRANKSMITHSAYSNB EDITORIAL

Unfortunately, information has surfaced that a former mayor and his cohorts are going around the Broad Street area, commonly known for its polish heritage,   advising all who would listen to their fabrications that the Republican candidate is too young to run the city as Mayor.

Historically, Democrats here in New Britain are known, to bend the truth with an outright fabrication without hesitation, in support for their carpetbagger mayor whose work history is very limited of being a food bagger at a grocery store.

The twenty six year old Erin Stewart has earned a degree from CCSU compared to O’Brien’s who didn’t finish his first semester.

She has lived in New Britain all of her life and loves the city.

O’Brien proudly accepted the endorsement, together with some members of his slate, form Bertha Lewis the president of The Working Family party and infamous Acorn Organization known for election corruption.

Socialism is alive and well in New Britain but, it will hopefully come to an end when Erin and her slate gets elected in our "next city election."

New Britain Car Show to Benefit Police Explorers - Courant.com

From The Ct-COPA

September 17, 2013
I wish to invite you all to attend our event;
Wednesday September 18, 2013, 7:00PM
The Whinstone Restaurant
245 Hartford RD in New Britain.
Let's Keep Housing Affordable In New Britain
No Friend To Housing

Nobody wants to pay more to live in a home or apartment.

Mayor O'Brien's housing ordinances guarantee higher rents and property expenses. MAKE NO MISTAKE, right after the election on November 5th, he will enforce his policies. The city budget has nearly $2,000,000 in fees from 9-1-1 fines, so this is a crisis!

I do not want to rely on the Courts to stop these fees and fines, it will take too long, so let's solve the problem ourselves! I ask all good Tenants and Landlords to unite and protect New Britain housing by ousting Mayor O'Brien on election day.
Instead of listening to our suggestions, the O'Brien Administration tried to silence us by holding "emergency" Common Council meetings with short notice and no public speaking.

NOW OUR COLLECTIVE VOICES WILL BE HEARD!
There is strength in numbers!  BE THERE ON SEPTEMBER 18th!
Come celebrate the formation of our Political Action Committee.

Let's keep housing affordable for all!

Light snacks and refreshments will be available.
Sincerely,

Bob De Cosmo
President, CT Property Owners Alliance Inc.

CPOA announces plans for debate

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sept 11, 2013, New Britain, CT - The Citizen’s Property Owner’s Association of New Britain has announced their plans to hold it’s first ever debate for Mayoral candidates Timothy O’Brien and Erin Stewart on Sunday, October 20th. “Our organization is dedicated to educating the public on issues of concern among property owners and taxpayers in the city of New Britain” said Catherine Cheney, the organization’s Events Chair. “A debate is the perfect way to allow both candidates to speak directly to the public.”

Cheney says the CPOA has already secured a location and a date for the event. “All we are waiting on is confirmation from both candidate’s campaigns. Invitations were sent out earlier this week.” The proposed debate would be in two parts. The first would be a traditional debate where candidates will answer moderated questions and the second would be more of a town hall style meeting, with candidates answering audience questions.

“We have a bipartisan panel drafting questions for the moderated debate session and no candidates for office who are members of the CPOA are involved in drafting or approving those questions.” Cheney said. “Our goal is the have a fair and open debate.

When asked how this debate will contrast with the League of Women Voter’s Debate, Cheney cited a few differences. “Our debate will be fully open to all broadcast media. We also will allow candidate campaigns to record and use the debate footage, with a few restrictions. Additionally, our combination of traditional moderated debate and town hall questioning means the candidates will have to respond directly to actual voters and think on their feet.”

Residents should press for Mayor O'Brien to explain his actions on recent "Hirees".

FRANKSMITHSAYSNB EDITORIAL:

Some items re City of New Britain politics, especially in regard to Mayor O’Brien’s Administration and in which you may have an interest.

On my own, I have been investigating: the hiring of additional administration staff for the Mayor’s Office/ Administration; and the involvement of the New Britain Office of HRA in funding the positions.

I have learned that both Matt Dabrowski (Events Coordinator) and Francisco Cuin ( working as a questionable position out of the Mayor’s Office) are being paid through HRA. Rosemary Klotz corroborated this fact at a recent meeting of the Greater New Britain Arts Alliance. I am told that this is being accomplished through an O’Brien Budget item (300K) called “Community Services Dept.

Exactly how the City and HRA accomplish this is unknown to many taxpayers.

Through the Finance Dept., Its noted that neither of these two names are on the City payroll. Nobody seem to know where the funding is coming from to pay these people, not the finance Department or the community service department.   It would be interesting to know from whom they receive their paychecks??????

The Mayor has also hired a needless “Grants Writer”, Sue Heller to do a function that the various Departments have done for themselves  quite successfully for many years. Parks & Recreation, has been awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars already this year.

Other City Departments are equally as successful. I am conjecturing  that any grants that have already been written will have to be forwarded to Heller and, if successful, she can say, “see what I did!”

Attempts of trying to obtain information from the State office of HUD with their stating that they have absolutely no involvement in this matter whatsoever.

Also, Mayor O’Brien is trying get four hundred thousand dollars to renovate the former Temple Bnai Israel on West Main St., now an Hispanic Organization location into housing for the homeless. Mayor O'Brien has mentioned that if he has no other option for funding he will seek to bond the project.
