Phil Sherwood: Candelori Made a Simple Mistake 20 Years Ago, But Has This Leopard Changed His Spots?
But Has This Leopard Changed His Spots?

FRANKSMITHSAYSNB EDITORIAL:
If you believe Phil Sherwood's rhetoric, Candelori simply made a mistake 20 years ago and should be forgiven, but the story goes much deeper than that.
Without getting into who did what in the organization, Candelori was a player in the infamous Colonial Realty scam, a scam that cost thousands an estimated $350 million in investments, and cost many their life savings, and even forced many into bankrupcy.
Many of the prinicples of Colonial Realty were convicted in federal court of various charges. Dr. Candelori himself pled guilty in federal court to income tax evasion, for what the New York Times reported as his failure to report hundreds of thousands of dollars in personal income. Does this sound to you like someone who simply made a mistake?
The Securities and Exchange Commission didn't think so when they permanently barred Dr. Candelori from associating with virtually anyone involved in the investment field and bonding industry. Now we are told that his past should be forgiven because he has turned his life around, but as the editor points out today in The Herald, Dr. Candelori is currently a defendent in a civil case that The Day of New London reported involves another real estate investment scheme--this time the propoerty allegedly was used to secure a loan that the former Chairman of the Mashantucket Tribal Nation told the Court was used to bribe him. Of important note is that some of his co-defendants in this same case are the same cohorts Candelori was associated with in Colonial Realty.
And now Phil Sherwood, the self proclaimed Czar of Ethics, would have you believe that this leopard has changed his spots, but has he--especially if he is currently involved in a civil case that involves other former players of the Colonial Realty scheme?
This appointment involves a man who, as Chairman of the Mattabassett District will have contol of more than $100 million of taxpayer dollars.
Has this man earned your trust, to be trusted with such a large sum of your money?
The record would suggest not.
The Mayor has done the right thing and vetoed this appointment. The City Council should do the right thing and listen to the public, the leaders of the other member towns and now even the Editors of The New Britain Herald, who believe the right action on their part is to let this veto stand.

OUR VIEW: We deserve politicians who are above suspicion - The New Britain Herald (newbritainherald.com)

Our founding fathers of our nation and state were wise enough to understand that if someone was capable of committing a crime such as a felony, there was a serious flaw in that person's character. They also understood that a person like that could not be trusted in a position of leadership, since a serious character flaw would be injurious to the government body that person represented. For most of our history, CHARACTER was considered to be the most important ingredient for a candidate. After FDR, the standard became "What can I expect in return if I support you?" In other words, PATRONAGE is now the key standard.
With that being said, Candelori in no way, shape, or form should be serving, as his character is obviously flawed to be capable of committing a crime that hurt so many people. This was not a crime of passion, but one that took thought and planning, and plenty of time for Candelori to see the error of his ways and back out. Did he? NO. So we know what we can expect from him. If you care about this issue, SHOW UP at the Council meeting next week, and bring EVERYONE YOU KNOW. Friends, neighbors, spouses, family. PACK the Council Chambers and everyone sign up to speak against this. I know Sherwood won't care, but perhaps we can show some of the other Council members that it is time to stand up for the city, and not for Sherwood. This could also influence the same Councilors to line up their votes on the side of the people in other issues as well. Until the people of this city show up in large numbers to protest the doings of this Council, Sherwood will run the show, and not the people of NB.

The Democratic Stance on the Mattabassett Appointment is a Mere Hypocrisy with Dems: "Felony is Past History"!

FRANKSMITHSAYSNB EDITORIAL:
The Democratic Majority Leader of the City Council, Phil Sherwood, was quoted in today's New Britain Herald as saying "events in the past should not be used as a predictor for the future." Apparently what Sherwood is saying is that a person convicted of a felony in the Colonial Realty scheme is just as trustworthy with your money as someone who wasn't?
Adding to this Hypocrisy is a comments quoted in the same article as having been made by Alderman Larry Hermanowski saying he agrees with Sherwood and he did not consider the Colonial Reality Fraud in which Connecticut residents lost three hundred fifty million dollars " to be relevant." and he continued when referring to the current multi-million dollar fraud case including bribery "Until somebody can show me he's directly involved in negotiations I don't care." This article continued with comments by Alderman Trueworthy with his stating the he sent materials to the Chief State Attorney's office and admitting that "nothing has been proven." It would be easy to sum up Hermanowski's attitude as just saying he doesn't care, when it comes to protecting the public interests.
It is quite apparent that the democrats will, via, Sherwood show their power in a fanatic display at the next Common Council meeting on December 9th by over-riding the Mayor's veto of resolution #30815--the attitude being "we won, so we can do whatever we want" without regard for the interests of the city of the public.
What is much sadder is witnessing their complete disregard for the local families that lost millions of dollars by investing into the "Colonial Reality Fraud Scheme" especially since a number of them were from New Britain, Cromwell and Berlin.
Having the city council democratic leadership showing no sympathy to their constituency who lost their life savings by investing in a ponzi scheme that Candelori was part of, is like putting the fox in charge of the chicken house.
What is even more disturbing is intent of the Federal Securities and exchange Commission had ordered appears to have been to keep William Candelori and his partners from ever handling public monies, but the Democratic leadership is quoted in today's Herald as being of the opinion that past criminal activity is "not to be used as a predictor in the future."
The fact that the Democrat party's own Majority Leader will stoop to such levels as to slander the good names of two prominent New Britain families with lifelong records of philanthropy just to produce some sort of smoke screen surrounding Dr. Candelori's criminal past, makes one wonder what ulterior motives could be in play behind the Democratic Leader's wild plans to put someone with a record of violating the public's trust in charge of an estimated $100 million in taxpayer dollars?
Independent Voter has left a new comment on your post "Mayor Stewart calls Sherwood hypocritical - The Ne...":
We need to start asking Alderman {I voted against the police station before I voted for it} Hermonowski what he is thinking.
.....Alderman Larry Hermanowski said he agreed with Sherwood and did not consider the Colonial Realty fraud in which Connecticut residents lost $350 million to be relevant.......
Mr. Candelori's willing participation in a 350 Million Dollar fraud scheme is not relevant to his appointment to a quasi-public entity?????
....Hermanowski also dismissed Candelori being named in another multi-million dollar fraud case......
I am just stunned. Are these the same people who questioned the cities auditing? Are these the same people who routinely imply that any companies that invest in New Britain are crooks??
On a personal note;
Larry, I can see the Kid from New Hampshire making sophomoric mistakes but you are a son of New Britain. Whoever is pulling the strings over at the DTC needs to be stopped before they completely alienate any and all investors and developers from doing business in town. What’s next? Your brethren have disparaged almost every successful businessperson in town from the Amodios to the Tomassos.
If I said it once I have said it a hundred times.
The leadership within the New Britain Democratic Party must be stopped.
John McNamara and his cronies must be removed from power. They are an embarrassment to The DTC, democrats and the citizens of New Britain as a whole.

Sally Eigenraam has left a new comment on your post "MAYOR STEWART CALLS FOR ACTION IN THE BEST INTERES...":
Phil Sherwood, I don't know how you have the audacity to show your face in this city. Everytime you open your mouth you stick your foot in it. You have on numerous occasions embarrassed this city while embarrassing yourself. What in your mind would compel you to make statements about the Tomasso and Manafort families? How is this relative to the Mattabasset appointments? One has nothing to do with the other.
And what possesses you to stick your neck out for one the members of one of the largest crimes ever committed in New Britain? The Colonial Realty Ponzi Scheme put this city on the map and not in a manner which we need to be reminded of with the appointment of William Candelori. Have you no moral compass?
The best thing that you can do at this point is to step down from the council.
