The Superintendent of the Board of Education submitted her proposed annual budget a sum of an approximate $126,000,000 representing a percentage increase over last year's of approximately 6.63%.
With the economic problems our city is currently facing our City Council will have a difficult time to make the board's final request work. The state's final education grants have yet to be determined which may result with a higher increase to the aforementioned budget numbers.
A Public hearing for this proposed budget will be held by the Board Of Education Next Monday the l2th. of January.
I will submit more information in a few days.

sounds like the Supt needs to do some trimming, how about the furloughs that the Mayor proposed for city hall, let's start furloughing BOE employees. That'll bring the budget down.

That's correct that she should be proposing a reduced budget in this depressed economy, not massive increases! How many of us taxpayers got a raise this year, but they want us to pay more taxes anyway.

The headline on this story should read that the newest member of the Board, Leslie Jacobs, was absent last night (would have been only her 2nd meeting). So much for the Democrats vouching for her reliability. I guess Dr. Kurtz had to struggle to make it through without Leslie's budget expertise. The arrogance continues to boggle the mind.

Regarding your comment about Ms. Jacobs not being in attendance of last night's school board Meeting; it was announced by the Chair person that she had called in stating she had a very bad cold and was told to stay home instead of attending and passing her sickness on to the others.

Don't say we didn't tell you so...Leslie Jacobs, Sherwoods' personal choice for BOE lackey (Dem in Republican clothing), true to form, missed the 1/5/09 BOE meeting. Not to worry; there were enough liberal Dems there, Wolski, Kochol, Beloin-Saavedra, Riley, Holley, to carry the $130 million budget of Kurtz forward. Bet you can't wait for the property tax increase! Continuous failures mean that Kurtz will ask for more, new programs to try to stem the tide of cellar level test scores. Are you Kidding? This BOE needs a huge street broom to sweep out these incompetents!
Perhaps the Superintendent and other school administrators should follow the lead of the North Haven Superintendent of Schools who just refused to accept her 3% raise, even though her contract grants it to her and it is rightfully hers to take. That is truly a selfless act during a time when the taxpayers can't afford to pay any additional taxes. This woman is truly a public servant.
Here in New Britain, we have a bunch a selfish individuals who here only to serve their own self interests and to take every dime they can bleed from the taxpayers. If this statement were not true, we would be seeing a proposed reduction in the budget, instead of a proposal for massive increases that will no doubt raise the tax burden for each and every homeowner in a time where very few citizens can afford to pay more in taxes.

Just ask Joe Biden, it is patriotic to pay higher taxes, so the homeowners should feel like patriots when they get their new jacked up tax bills thanks to New Britain's tax and spend Democrats!
How many New Britain taxpayers got a big fat raise this year??????

at Mondays BOE meeting a motion to televize meetings made by Jim Sanders was approved.
Now the public can see what exactly goes on at these meetings.
And how some BOE interact with each other.

uh oh, another Democratic elected official in trouble with the law?
According to a Courant story:
A board of education member (E. Hartford) has been released from custody on a $100,000 non-surety bond after being arrested and charged with driving drunk, striking two vehicles and trying to flee, police said.
Henry J. Pawlowski Jr., 41, of 48 Oxford Drive, sustained head injuries during the incident and received treatment in Hartford Hospital before being released today.
Pawlowski, known as "Hank," is a Democrat and was elected to the school board in 1999. He is a lawyer employed by the state Freedom of Information Commission, where he works as a legislative and administrative advisor. He previously served as the school board's chairman and secretary
At about 10 p.m. Tuesday, an officer saw Pawlowski strike a vehicle with his car in the area of 357 Main St., then drive away and strike another vehicle.
When officers confronted him, Pawlowski resisted arrest and had to be forcibly removed from the car and arrested, police said. Officers also had to use a Taser and pepper spray to control Pawlowski, and he was bit by a police dog, police said.
At police headquarters, police said they found eight packages of marijuana on Pawlowski.
He was charged with evading responsibility, operating under the influence, disobeying an officer's signal, interfering with police, breach of peace, attempted assault on a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, possession/sale of marijuana, tampering with evidence and failure to submit to fingerprints.
Mary Alice Dwyer Hughes, the chairwoman of the board of education, said police informed her of Pawlowski's arrest this morning and she alerted other board members, who she described as "very upset."
Does the proposed Board of Ed budget include an increase in Dr. Kurtz's salary??????
People who go to work or meetings sick get the rest of us sick. Jacobs did something right.
Let's the taxpayers will show up for next Monday's budget hearing at the Board's board room.

Kurtz has a great big nerve. State legislators, Governor Rell and others have told municipalities that there shall be less education and other money coming to the towns in CT for educations. So what does Kurtz do? Says we need a $123,000+ position at NBHS for a Special Ed. Dept. Head. What a rip off! Also, we need $80K for one autistic teacher? Is this for another one on one situation? What does SPED Director Walek do if anything excerpt sit at BOE meetings with his loose leaf binder in front of him? Kurtz is dreaming!
