No one is saying that these men and women don't deserve the 8% raise that this arbitration award gives them, but what the news media is not explaining to everyone, is that because of what is known as "pattern bargaining" this is going to pave the way for the rest of the state employee unions to get similar 8% raises in similar arbitration awards, that will also most likely become law without any actual vote of the legislature.
Is this economy the right time to be paving the way for 53,000 state employees to get an 8% pay raise? Who among us is receiving that kind of raises in the private sector?
Representative Hamzy is correct to insist on a vote by the legislature. At least if they are going to pass it, let them go on the record as supporting it.
