A train service from New Britain to Hartford would benefit New Britain and should be pursued by the town leadership. New Britain has many empty office spaces and in some cases entire buildings. The former Burritt bank on the corner of Bank ST and Main comes to mind. With the proposed bus route and the trains New Britain would be posed to be the most accessible city in the state. Fill those office spaces, and the rest of the plan will fall in place. Restaurants, specialty stores, pubs. Many of the pieces are already in place. Trinity on Main is a bright shining star. The people who saw a diamond in the rough need to be commended and held out as a example that with a little planning and some fore sight things can happen in town. I can see a formal restaurant next to city hall. People making million dollar decisions on Bank ST. Nationally known artist having a beer after a performance at Trinity. Corporate giants landing at Robertson airport and being whisked to a board meeting at the new headquarters on Slater Rd. Running into some old buddies who are catching a CCSU vs. UCONN game at the new Dennis Beatty sports complex. Or maybe I’ll just go down to one of the famed political clubs on Broad ST. You know you can't beat a locally produced Martin Rosol kielbasa sandwich from the Starapolska Rest. Hey if you don't like Polish food grab a half chicken some rice and a few plantains from Willies. Hey as long as I am with the guys talking about how the nieghberhood has really come to life now that families are moving in to be closer to their new offices in the old Stanly Works factories. It’s amazing the transformation...................This old conservative can dream, no?

I got so caught up in it I posted that on the wrong blog! This really could be a boon for New Britain though. A train service could make New Britain attractive companys who would otherwise set up shop in New Haven county. I think this would provide the catalyst we were promised that Rt 9or what ever it was called when the split the town only to abandon it and crate a highway to nowhere for decades. With the new highway extension north, direct bus routes to Hartford and a train route south we would be positioned perfectly in the center. Open and ready for business!

At least this provides another avenue for people to flee town to get away from the ever increasing taxes at the hands of the Democrats.

I have "railed" against the LONG delays from DOT in building this bus way between New Britain and Hartford since I got back on the city council. I thought this project was used to prolong careers of many in DOT and gave millions to contracts unnecessarily. And for what? Where are we?

Ten years and tens of millions of dollars of "planning" and "consulting" and still nothing. At the time of the initial proposal several of us expressed our views of passenger rail service versus buses. We thought it would be CHEAPER to utilize the existing rail system instead of all this design work, property acquisitions and bridge building. Plus people were more receptive to using a train versus a bus. But the "experts" said a bus system was more economical and cheaper. Really?

I hope Rep McCluskey is sincere in promoting rail service to New Britain. WE IN NEW BRITAIN WANT RESULTS.

I am a proponent of Mass transit. I happen to believe that both the proposed Bus way and the rail service are good ideas. However I am concerned about the condition of the buses being used for local service in town. If you have ever wondered what that school bus was doing driving around town at 9 pm my guess is that you are unaware that The New Britain transportation Company uses school buses as well as airport taxi type buses to cover the local city bus routes. Why is it that they are not using mass transit type buses? The school and taxi type buses are not handicap accessible. How would you feel if you waited 15-20 minutes in sub freezing cold only to be told that you will need to wait for the bus company to send a handicap accessible van? The Ct Transit Company (Hartford’s local bus service provider) has newer buses. Stamford, Groton-New London, Bridgeport and New Haven as well. The condition of the buses that New Britain Transportation uses is bordering on criminal. I suggest that all of the Alderman and the Mayor take a ride on one of these death traps. I am no expert on livery but I can't imagine that these old buses and school buses are up to standard. I had to wonder if the near tragic accident on Bank St Between a bus and the bus stop shelter was not caused by poor maintenance of the buses. Don't even get me started on the condition of the bus shelters themselves. I suggest that our city leaders look into what the city can do to compel the companies running these routes to upgrade to buses that are clean, safe and handicap accessible before the citizens have to pay for a civil suit against the city of New Britain.
