My son was in the Explorers program a few years ago..the values instilled in him back then are still with him now, approximately 15 years later...Kadoos to the Police working with the youths. Here's hoping they'll be a part of the Police Dept. forever!!

The Hartford Police Cadet program might be something that the Chief could look into. In Hartford, the cadet program is open only to Hartford residents between the ages of 18 and 21. Cadets are paid, city employees who are uniformed and work in various divisions within the police department. They direct traffic during parades and other events, take telephoned complaints in the "tele-seve" unit, and help out in many areas of the department. They even carry police radios and help out patrolling as extra eyes and ears for the department when assigned to that function. It is generally a stepping stone to becoming a police officer and the years of service as a cadet even count towards retirement in Hartford. This could be a good program for Explorers who are interested in becoming officers to continue their training for ultimately becoming a police officer. If Chief Gagliardi agrees that this program could work for his department, maybe he could look into all the specifics from the Hartford program with the idea of bringing it here to New Britain. Why not offer New Britain youth a pathway to becoming city police officers through a paid job that prepares them for a career in their hometown? It also offers the chief the benefit of 3 years of evaluation of the individual to help enable him to decide if the person meets the criteria for employment as a police officer.
