Alderman Salvio Speaks Out On Ethics

3/13/09

The Herald: Letters to Editor

Today?s Herald (3/13), carried an article regarding the passage of a resolution at the Common Council meeting of, 3/11/09. The resolution as I see it added some redundant language to the City?s ethics ordinance and at least one, punitive measure targeting Republicans and possibly protective of a Democrat alderman. In addition, I believe the language is discriminatory.

In his introductory remarks explaining the resolution, the author, Democrat Phil Sherwood explained ? and I paraphrase ? that (a) New Britain electors want to know, ?what we?re up to? when we run for office and (b) ?do we have something to hide.? These statements are ridiculous because, (a) neither is required as a prerequisite in the rules governing running for office and (b) the resolution also targets some individuals who are not elected, e.g., directors and department heads.

People are vetted before they run for office or before they are hired. One of the requirements for running for elective office is that one lives in town. To ask what other properties someone may own in town other than their ?principal residence? is simply a smokescreen designed to protect someone from full disclosure about their principal residence.

Phil Sherwood has introduced and had passed two pieces of municipal legislation- not one of which has had a positive outcome - since joining the Council. One, an FOI fiasco ? redundant stuff from state statutes - that ended up costing the police department needed revenues and this second fiasco which is largely an invasion of privacy. How did he do it? Numbers. There are 13 Democrats on the Common Council. In addition and since 2003, whenever a Democrat Council member has been shown to violate the city?s ethics ordinances, not one has received so much as a reprimand. There have been serious violations of the City Charter as well as violations of our Ethics Ordinances.

Here?s the record; 2003-05 Council, 15 Dems, 0 Republicans; 2005-07 Council, 12 Dems, 3 Republicans; 2007 ?09 Council, 13 Dems, 2 Republicans. Any questions?

Alderman Salvio shows just more examples of how ill prepared and inexperienced this person is to be a leader of anything. Because of his lack of any life experience, you, the taxpayers are paying for his failed attempts to pass something just so he can have his name on a piece of legislation without any regard for the consequences or the costs to the taxpayers.

The scarier thing is the head of ill prepared and lack of life experience, Tim O'Brien, may be New Britain's next Mayor.

It was refreshing to hear from one of the only New Britain Aldermen who even knows the definition of "ethics"

If must be diffcult for Little Mac, the lesser one, to accept that even members of his own party know what a socialist buffoon he really is.
