MONTHLY REPORT – MAY 2009
I was honored this month to receive the Police Commissioners Association Distinguished Chief Award on May 28, 2009. I want to thank the Police Commission for nominating me and attending the event. I want to thank Commissioner Mercier for introducing me at the event. I also was particularly pleased to have Union President John Gonzalez, V.P. Peter Scirpo, past-President Philip Caseria, and State FOP President John Flynn present with other officers from the Executive Board and regular members of the Department there.
I have received the certified police officer list and we have begun the background investigations. We still need to get clarification on our budget to determine just how many officers we can hire. I attended a Common Council subcommittee meeting to plead our case and I appreciate the Board members being in attendance to support our position that we need all the officers.
This month was filled with events to remember our fallen military and Police Officers killed in the line of duty. We held our annual Police Memorial services this month, members attended the Police Memorial Dinner to benefit survivors, we had the Honor Guard attend the Police Memorial Services at the Police Academy, and we attended the Armed Forces Day services with a number of military veterans who are police officers. We also marched in the Memorial Day Parade.
Members of the Department participated in a State-wide sweep of high level drug dealers. Many police departments and DEA Agents were involved in the event. There were nearly 3 dozen arrests with property seizures, cash and drugs taken into evidence. The case originated when New Britain undercover officers made drug arrests that eventually led to the widening of the investigation to the State level. We are very proud of our undercover officers whose names are not being disclosed to protect their identities.
My staff and I have reviewed our strategic plan for any pandemic flu outbreak and we had a conference call with the Governor to assured us that the State is ready to support our efforts should the need arise.
The Department made 1317 arrests for the month with 559 being criminal in nature and 767 were infractions. The department has received a total of 4,441 cases this month. We are continuing the trend of reduced calls for service as we have recorded 697 less calls for service this year than the same time last year.

I'll start by saying I've ALWAYS supported the police dept. With family members on different police forces I understand their difficulties. I've met Officer Gonzalez, he offered his assistance then took it a step further and called me the next day to see if I needed further assistance. We've chatted several more times and I think some officers can learn alot from him.
While the chief is "fundraising" at Newbrite Plaza the pleas coming from the residents near the intersection of Stanley and Whiting Sts have gone unheard for over 4yrs.
Each night law abiding residents are treated to productions of Lord of The Flies, The Fast and The Furious, Drug Wars and ending with scenes from The Tracy Thurman Story.
POLICE OFFICERS should be dispatching cruisers, instead we must argue our case with the current female dispatcher. Why NOT ask an officer simply sit on Kelsey St with his lights off when they're speeding at 40 mph through stop signs. Was the biker accident a month ago not enough? I'm thinking someone must die before any notice is taken. The shooting death a few months ago did bring sanity to this section, it was a quiet and enjoyable for 2 weeks - I sat on the porch one evening!!
I'd like to thank Guida's Dairy Security for any attempts to help us. I've seen them quickly and without incident dispatch larger groups of kids ready to fight. I see they now are riding in pairs.
