NEW BRITAIN — The Committee on Planning, Housing and Zoning voted unanimously Tuesday night 07/07/09 to recommend to the full Common Council sale of the property at 121-131 Main St. to Arete Development Group, for construction of a police station along with commercial and retail development.

The sale of the property for $2 million is contingent on city approval of building plans for the spot and on Common Council approval of financing plans by which New Britain could either pay Arete to build or lease the police station.

As we see it, a strong police presence in the heart of New Britain could provide visitors with the peace of mind they need to visit, especially at night, but the key to any successful downtown is a reason to visit, and to come here regularly.

Already, the city is seeing an explosion of arts offerings with Trinity-on-Main and The Hole In The Wall Theatre, both virtually across from the police station site. What remains to be seen is whether shops, restaurants and people will follow.
