Born and raised in New Britain, Anthony attended New Britain public schools through middle school. Anthony has both a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from UCONN. Anthony expects to earn his Masters degree in Music Education from CCSU in December.
Anthony is a elementary school music teacher, employed by the Cheshire Public Schools for the past 6 years. Anthony currently serves on the New Britain Civil Service Commission and the Executive Board of the Main Street Singers.
Anthony's wife, Mariette, is a Emergency Department Nurse. The Kane's have one daughter (Maura) and are New Britain homeowners, so they have a personal stake in the future of our school system and the community.

A good candidate for the NBBOE for a change.
As a rule,educators on the School Board are not in a position to be objective. Business people should be appointed to these positions because the shool district spends 60% of the municipal budget.
Kurtz is a tough superintendent. Tough not good! Mayor Stewart held her feet to the fire and kept our taxes down.
Will a board full of educators care about the taxpayers? I think not.
The town committees really select the BOE members. Maybe there should be more educators on the town committees.
I agree, more educators should be on the BOE..they know the daily problems of the system. Mr. Kane seems well qualified to serve on the Board... a much better choice than Leslie Jacobs!!!
You are wrong. You misread Anonymous. Educators are NOT good for the school district on the School Board. They have a career in education. They want their raises. They know NOT to question a superintendent, no matter how bad that she is. Yes, they may not be working in OUR school district but the word is OUT there!
An educator is part of the flow, not making waves. We need business people on the board.
While I agree with the idea of placing business leaders on the board of ed, I don't see a problem with one educator who can help the business leaders understand the educational issues that arise, especially since he doesn't work in New Britain and doesn't have a conflict of interest.
While we are on the subject of business leaders being needed for boards, do we have even one business leader among the 13 Democrats on the council--the answer is no. The only business leader is one of the 2 Republicans. Don't all the council Democrats either work for the city, or a social organization that is funded through taxpayer dollars?
Maybe it is time we started electing more business leaders to the common council, that is where the real problem lies, nothing but a bunch of people getting fat off the taxpayers and voting through everything to make themselves even fatter at taxpayer expense.
How many aldermen also have their family members working either for the city, or some taxpayer funded organization as well????
How many of them actually own property in the city and have a stake in the success of the city???
As a business owner, property owner and a parent the most frustrating observation about the school budget is that for all the dollars spent under the current administration, test scores remain
dismal. Everytime a new increased school budget is presented there is always the threat of teacher lay-offs, increased class sizes and a reduction in extra-curricular activities for students.
We never hear that an audit of adminstrative expenses will be conducted and extras downtown will be slashed. Why aren't the millions of dollars being spent on education in New Britain, working to improve our test scores and reputation as a good place to raise children?
One problem is we should be hiring top administrators and teaching staff from within. Persons with a vested interest in the New Britain community and it's children.
Some will argue, it's the student body and little parental involvment that is a constant struggle in New Britain. Then our focus and funding should work on improving this issue from pre-school and beyond. We could cut the fancy New Britain Educator magazine for a start and re-direct funding to parental awareness and out-reach.
These well written comments brings us back full circle. It is the Town Committees who select the BOE members. After the election, five out of six candidates are voted in. There is not much choice for the voters.
The Common Council selects people when there is a vacancy. Their last two selections merely took up seats.
The BOE, with few exceptions let Kurtz get away with everything she wanted. As long as she has six votes in her pocket, she does as she pleases.
A few years ago, Kurtz thought it would be nice if the BOE gave $8,000 to the Assistant Superintendent to go towards the courses he needed to become a superintendent.
Only two members had the vision to know that he would leave New Britain as soon as he finished his courses and was selected as a superintendent elsewhere.
That is exactly what he did. The New Britain tax payers funded his education and then he moved away.
What was in the minds of the eight BOE members who voted for this very unnecessary expenditure. Were they that loyal to Kurtz, didn't care about the taxpayer or just plain dumb?
I wouldn't be running for BOE if I didn't think I could be objective. My decisions will be based on what benefits the students and the city, not what benefits teachers or their unions. I want to see this city thrive once again, that is my first consideration always.
