NEW BRITAIN — Police have identified a suspect in an incident in which two people were shot Wednesday afternoon on Allen Street, but do not have the person in custody nor are they releasing the identity.

Although the motive was unclear late Wednesday, police said, the shooting may have stemmed from an argument that occurred shortly before the gunfire.

Police continue to investigate the incident in which three cars were engaging in some type of chase on Allen Street.

Witnesses reported seeing three cars driving close together on the street about 2 p.m. when a shot rang out.

“I saw three cars all close to one another and I think one of the cars was chasing the others,” said a Farmington man who was visiting his friend’s business at the intersection of Oak and Allen streets. “It was a black SUV and he pulled up on the sidewalk alongside the other cars and I heard a gunshot.”

All three cars took off headed east on Allen Street, he said.

The victims of the shooting turned up a few miles away at Fire Station 5 on Stanley Street seeking help, Lt. James Wardwell said.

Two people suffered gunshot wounds and two others received minor injuries, possibly from flying glass, Wardwell said. One shooting victim and the two with minor injuries were treated and released from the hospital. The other shooting victim is believed to be in stable condition.

Police spent time examining two crime scenes Wednesday afternoon — a Dodge Durango with shot-out windows parked at the firehouse and Allen Street between Oak and Wilcox streets where the shooting occurred.

“We are still investigating but it appears that the car was stopped for traffic when the vehicle was shot at,” Wardwell said. “We don’t believe this was a random act.”

Police are looking for a dark-colored small SUV that is believed to have been the vehicle from where the shots were fired. Investigators had not determined the number of suspects that were in the vehicle as of 5 p.m. Wednesday, he said.

The Farmington man said he just happened to be looking in the area just west of the intersection when he noticed the cars coming up on each other.

“At first it didn’t register what’s wrong with this picture?’” he said. “Then I saw the SUV come up on the sidewalk, I heard the shot and saw all three take off. I thought that sounds like a gunshot and then they were all gone. It happened so quick.”

Two 15-year-old boys who were hanging out on Wilcox Street also heard the shot but decided to head for cover. “I heard gunshots but I went upstairs because I didn’t want to get shot,” said one who identified himself as D-D. “It was kind of scary. I knew my mom was out walking and I had to make sure she was okay.”
