.Republicans Mark Bernacki and Lou Salvio took a 5% decrease in their council paychecks, the Democrats all refuse to do it..O'Brien is following in the Dems' footsteps...typical...so much for sacrifice!!
The legislators of Connecticut have state-paid health benefits that are the best in the world and get paid nearly $30,000 for a part-time job on top of those benefits.
Let me get this straight, O'Brien is the man of the people, but he apparently plans to keep his position in the legislature paying $30,000 a year, and the best health care benefits in the world, and is now trying to add the $85,000 a year Mayor's salary on top of that. By keeping both jobs, he will be making $115,000 a year with free State of Connecticut health insurance, but he is the representative of the poor?
As a teacher I have great health insurance, I won't lie about it. But even I pay $15/$25 for prescriptions and I believe my copay on doctor's visits is $15.
The fact that O'Brien and the others refused any type of give back is disgusting.

Let me see if I have this right. I go to Stop and Shop and buy a 20 oz. box of cereal for $3.99. I return the following week and notice that they don’t sell the 20 oz box of cereal but they do sell the same size box but now its 18 oz for the same price of $3.99. Did I now just pay more for the cereal?
We at one time were able to put out as much trash as we wanted, when we wanted. Now we are allowed to only put out enough trash to fill our new clean cart trash cans. Cutting services and charging the same tax is a tax increase. Yes, we can ask for another trash cart if we want to rent it for an additional $60.00 a year.
We were once able to put out as much large trash once a year and the trash company would pick up this trash, no questions asked. Now we are able to only put out 5 metal items a year. After that they will charge you an additional fee for every item added. Again, cutting services and charging the same tax is a tax increase.
We once were given 25 leaf bags per year for our leaves. Now we are only given 20 bags… Cutting services and charging the same tax is a tax increase.
My question is, how much more cutting of services will it take before, it’s not considered “holding the line on taxes”?
I am impressed with the level of services you get in New Britain, while "holding the line on taxes."
You are allowed to rent a second trash can if you desire, I live in a town where you may not under any circumstances have another one and nothing that is not inside that one can will be picked up.
You are provided 20 leaf bags for free, and you are complaining that you used to get 25? I am only able to get leaf bags if I drive to City Hall and pay for them, the last price I paid was $1.50 per bag, but I heard they have since raised that price.
You are complaining that you can only put out 5 pieces of metal for free, and then you are charged for any additional items. In my city, you can never put out such an item unless you make an appointment far in advance of the date you want to put the item out, and then must drive to City Hall and pay a $35.00 fee before they will pick up even one item.
Sounds like you should be thankful for the great services you have.
By the way, my Mayor is a Democrat, that could explain the differences.
Correction: This year we only got 16 bags for our leaves. Really cute! Last year, I raked and bagged 175 bags of leaves! I am not complaining but I am a 77 year old tough lady! I swore last year that I would not do it again, but, here I am,enjoying the beautiful Autumn days and gulping Tylenol for my aching back! How about a tax credit?
I have a young growing family, and we barely fill half of our trash can every week. Many of these changes in services were to save money so that we wouldn't have to have tax INCREASES. The bulk collection they used to do was awful. First, many people abused it by coming into NB and dumping stuff from out of town, which the citizens of NB were then responsible for paying for. Second, it made the town look like crap for weeks. Third, if you have more than 5 bulk items per year, you have too much junk! Stop complaining and count your blessings. Maybe you should hire a couple local kids to do your leaves if it's so difficult, or buy a home with a smaller yard. There are lots of options. Why is it the government's responsibility to take care of your yard? Even Grover Cleveland, a Democrat, disagreed with a nanny state and rejected every government spending plan that came across his desk!
When it comes to my leaves, I do not need your stupid options. I love my great big house full of leaves which would cost me $400 if I chose to hire another person to do my work. As I said, if you read with comprehension, I am not complaining. I do buy all of my extra bags at Home Depot for $1.88 for a five to a packet. That adds up!
I would rather do an honest day of raking for several weeks and give that $400 to local charities.
Besides, you must be living on a different planet if you think that today's kids are going to rake leaves all day. Get real!
Madam, you are complaining, unless you happened to be joking when you asked for a tax credit for raking leaves. I'm simply saying that you have options. If you want to rake leaves, so be it. But if you seriously want a tax credit, forget it! And yes, there are kids who are willing to rake leaves. Every day it snows, I have two kids come around my neighborhood knocking on doors and asking to shovel my driveway. I'm sure they'd be willing to rake leaves as well. As a teacher, I can tell you while there are many spoiled brats, there are also many hardworking, innovative students. You seem to be very negative about an awful lot.

I spoke in jest! However,I am NOT complaining or negative. Maybe, the chemo and radiation I had this year are still zapping my energy!
