Letter to the Editor By: Dwight Blint
I was appalled by the shoddy reporting of the story appearing in the Oct. 13 edition of the New Britain Herald, "O'Brien pushes for tax reform."
With all due respect, James Craven should have placed "paid for by the committee to elect Tim O'Brien" after this so called news story.
Where is the opposing point of view or even a point of view from an objective observer? He allows Mr. O’Brien to make unchallenged and questionable assertions about potential sources of income that simply do not exist. He dropped in a gratuitous and self-serving non sequitur from Mr. McNamara about his party’s candidate. And he did nothing to explain the claim that an overwhelming majority of taxpayers have seen their property taxes go up, when in fact this city has held the line on its mill rate for six years. Where is the call to the mayor, his campaign manager, the chair of the Republican Town Committee, or the chair of the Board of Finance for comment?
I’m very disappointed with this story, both as a candidate, a city resident, and as a former journalist. Mr. Craven and the New Britain Herald can and should have done a much better job with this one. Suppose I claim that we can raise $1 million in additional revenue by making sure all dog owners register their pets, would he check that out or just print it?

Dwight, The Herald would just ignore such a claim made by you because they only report on their liberal, socialist candidate. It is just like the way members of the media talk about the tingly feeling they get up and down their legs when Obama speaks.
This is why Sean Hannity says, and rightfully so, that journalism is dead in America.
I also noticed that they reported the statements, false as they may have been, made by O'Brien as the front page headlines with no reference to any comments from the Mayor, and when the Mayor did finally get a chance to respond in a later edition, what do you think they did? They put a small article inside the paper, where they probably hoped no one would even notice it.
They even misspelled the mayor's name when reporting on the debate. It is becoming clearer all the time that The Herald is apparently in the tank for O'Brien the same way NBC was in the tank for Obama.
Some journalism, isn't it?
Hmmm, perhaps Mr. Blint should look in the mirror before throwing stones.

A lady on Rush's talk show was describing how she wasn't getting anywhere by calling politicians in regard to Obama, so she called the FBI (in regard to ACORN and other things).
She told Rush the FBI told her they knew what was going on with Obama and advised her to watch FOX cable news and listen to talk radio. She said the FBI said they couldn't do anything in regard to Obama because his Secret Service will not allow them and his SS say they handle the President.
EVEN THE FBI SAYS TO WATCH FOX NEWS!
Rush asked which FBI office. She said Los Angeles. (now I'm not 100% certain it was LA, but it was in California).
She then said she called another FBI office and they told her the same thing--to watch FOX cable news and listen to talk radio.
I notice the FBI didn't say, read The Herald for the truth!
After many years of being a "political junkie",finally, I got a call from an ABC Survey Group. It was of great interest to me that the the first request from them was that they wanted to interview the youngest person over eighteen in the household. Dah!!
Too bad for them, I was the only one living at that household and I was armed for bear! Of course, a young person does not have the time or probably the interest in the issues.I did and I was more than ready.
Even though the polls are going more in our favor, they are pulling these shenigans.
We will win. Going after Fox News was the dumbest thing yet!
I'd love to hear the editor's explanation on how the decision was made to put campaign statements made by O'Brien on the front page without even a statement from Mayor Stewart being offered.
And they wonder why no one wants to read their rag anymore?
The Stewart vs. O'Brien Debate...Blighted Housing:
After viewing Connecticut General Statute 7-148ff (Special Assessment on Blighted Housing)
that was posted on the Frank Smith Blog and subject of lively debate when Mayor Stewart stated that the City faces many problems and that issue of blight envolves the task of working with landlords and homeowners to help them bring their blighted properties back up to community standards.
We also agree with Mayor Stewart’s position that Statute 7-148ff is not a revenue generator of money for City of New Britain's General Fund, but is structured to cover the costs of the police and fire and health code enforcement efforts on those target City blighted properties - and that all revenue acquired must be kept in a special account.
Rep. O’Brien is also off-base on his verbal political statements regarding his interpretation of state Statute 7-148ff that he (O'Brien) will be able to extend property tax relief to all NB tax paying homeowners on his blight pie-in-sky political agenda as elected Mayor of New Britain.
Is James Craven following in the footsteps of Rick Guinness?
Craven doesn't like being criticized. I sent him an email a while ago wondering why he was
ignoring the fact that Chris Murphy wasn't having a open Town Gown meeting in New Britain. He responded with a blistering attack on me for implying that he was not doing his job.
I did the right thing cancelling both papers several years ago.
Maybe James Craven has hopes that Rick Guinness will hire him to write for his new tabloid...

CRAVEN DID WRITE A GLOWING REPORT ABOUT A PHONY MEETING MURPHY HELD IN HIS OFFICE WITH 7 PEOPLE, BY INVITE ONLY, AND BEHIND LOCKED DOORS, WHEREBY CRAVEN MADE IT APPEAR THAT MURPHY ACTUALLY HELD A TOWN HALL MEETING IN NEW BRITAIN, AND THEN HE WROTE ANOTHER STORY ABOUT A PRIVATE MEETING MURPHY HELD WITH THE UNIONS AT AFSCME HEADQUARTERS FOR THE UNIONS TO PUSH THEIR EXTREMIST AGENDA WITH MURPHY, AND AGAIN CRAVEN WROTE A GLOWING REVIEW OF THE MEETING MURPHY HELD TO SO-CALLED LISTEN TO THE VOTERS OF NEW BRITAIN, BUT WHAT DID CRAVEN WRITE ABOUT MURPHY IGNORING REPEATED REQUESTS BY THE ELDERLY CITIZENS OF NEW BRITAIN FOR HIM TO ATTEND A MEETING AT THE SENIOR CENTER?
NOT ONE WORD!
Was Johnny Mel there to lock the doors for Murphy?

Are you referencing the same Andy Thibault that said this about our troops? "Basically, we're killing the civilians indiscriminately.”? The same guy who contributes to salon and Huffington? No, Andy’s not a blatantly far left “OPINION” columnist!
Has anyone at the Herald figured out how to spell the mayor's name, since we all know they only care about spelling their own candidate's name correctly.
