THE FORUM HELD AT THE HIGH SCHOOL TURNS INTO A MAYORAL DEBATE

FRANKSMITHSAYSNB EDITORIAL:

With regard to the mayoral debate held last night at the New Britain High School I was just attempting to go over my notes in order to put my own spin on what took place but a summary of this event written by Ms. Sally Eigenraam pointed all the main points of this Mayoral encounter.

My admiration for her well written summation of the event must have James Craven, Staff Reporter, of the New Britain Herald wondering why he missed reporting in a direct and effective review of the night’s deliberations.

Her comments can be reviewed by your going to the “MAYORAL DEBATE AT THE HIGH SCHOOL” on this blog.

In short, my dissertation of this event could not be better the one rendered by her.

I believe Obrien keeps focusing so much on blight, even though his blight ordinance was so seriously defective that his fellow Democrats on the council had to agree with the mayor's efforts to fix it, as a distraction to keep you focused away from the real issues of the campaign--keeping property taxes down and encouraging business and industry in developing here.

Obrien has a long history of supporting measures that are ant-business and his record favors huge tax increases, and virtually giving public employees anything they want, all things that will raise your property taxes to pay for them.

His ridiculous promise to spend all the money he outlined for relief efforts, and not raise your taxes because he is going to pay for it all through increasing the values of blighted properties is as ridiculous as Obama claiming he will provide free health care to 47 million people and it won't cost the taxpayers one more dime.

Do you believe either of these ridiculous claims?

Empty promises is all I am hearing.

Apologies for any technical glitches/sound quality issues/shaky camera hands.

Does Tim O'Brien think the city will win the lottery, to pay for his pipe dreams for New Britain?

RTC Debate Video’s: The political debate Wednesday night (Oct. 7, 2009) of Mayor Stewart and Candidate O’Brien (D) can be viewed on YOUTube - http://www.nbrtc.com/. While Mayor Stewart was big on details and exact plans Candidate O’Brien was big on promises and unsupported claims.

Tim O’Brien again defended “senior tax relief” (videos 7 and 9) without being able to produce an evidence that such a program is needed. Paul Carver (R), candidate for Board of Education, called out the Democratic Council (video 10) for repeatedly allocating funds for such a program without ever creating the program to distribute those funds.

The issue of blight came up (videos 20a and 20b) and Mayor Stewart explained the new “Clean and Lien” program that is being implemented across the country to great success.

Tim O’Brien, on the other hand, suggested raising the taxes on blighted properties and also advocated for continued use of the outdated and ineffective program he created while on the City Council, the same program that has a proven track record of failure.

Over all there is a lot of information in these videos, and while the sound quality and camera work are not professional it is definitely worth watching.
