In the Herald article, Sherwood said he didn’t understand why Candelori was being scrutinized when the city is known to have done business with contractors like the Tomasso Group:
Apparently Sherwood is laying the groundwork to ram through this appointment no matter how much dirt surfaces on his boy, Candelori!
What does it mean when someone pleads guilty to a criminal offense (felony) in federal court, how is that "assuming guilt?"
"It’s very important that the council take ethics and the public interest very seriously in this case but it’s also important not to assume guilt," Sherwood said.
Apparently U. S. District Court Judge T. F. Gilroy Daly was "ASSUMING GUILT?"
SEC NEWS DIGEST, August 31, 1995:
"WILLIAM CANDELORI BARRED"
"The Commission announced the entry of an order instituting administrative proceedings against William P. Candelori (Candelori) and the simultaneous acceptance of his offer of settlement. Candelori is a former associated person of Colonial Equities Corp., a broker-dealer previously registered with the Commission. The Order bars Candelori from association with any broker, dealer, municipal securities dealer, investment adviser or investment company.
The Commission found that on August 22 the Honorable T. F. Gilroy Daly of the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut enjoined Candelori from further violations of certain registration and antifraud provisions of the securities laws. The complaint, filed on March 9 against Candelori and six others, alleges violations of several antifraud and securities registration provisions of the federal securities laws in connection with a fraudulent unregistered public offering by Colonial Realty Company of 1200 limited partnership units in the Colonial Constitution Limited Partnership during 1989 and 1990. Candelori consented to the injunctive order without admitting or denying the complaint's allegations. The administrative order against Candelori was also based on his prior criminal conviction. (rel. 34-36170)."

So the city cannot do business with companies because people involved with them went to prison (even though those individuals are no longer associated with the businesses), but Candelori is innocent until proven guilty. I cannot wait until the Mayor is vindicated from this latest attack. The Mayor would be justified in considering bringing a lawsuit against Candelori and Sherwood for defamation of character as well. I don't know how Sherwood looks himself in the mirror every morning. Such a shame that the people of NB elected someone who says one thing (that he would be open, honest, and willing to work in a bipartisan manner) and do another (be sneaky, close-minded, and partisan to the core, telling all Dems on the Council to vote the party line at the very first meeting). Still the Herald hasn't reported on Candelori's delinquent property taxes as reported by Frank Smith several times! Isn't that a reflection on a person's character, especially for such a high level position?
Imagine the headlines if as of November 16th, Mayor Stewart or Alderman Salvio had still not paid their property taxes yet for this year?
And the Herald tries to convince us they are not partisan in their reporting?
The s**t is getting really deep surrounding the recklessness in which these Dems are so hell bent on ramming through this appointment--and they apparently couldn't care less about protecting the interests of the city and its 100 million dollars even though that is a drop in the bucket compared to the 350 million the investors lost in the Colonial Realty scam.
Does the CCAG (Sherwood's supposed employer) receive any federal funding? Does the CCAG receive any state funding that came from the Feds? Is the CCAG registered at the State as a lobbying firm? How about its Director and Deputy Director. Is AFSCME connected in any way to Mattabassett?

The Herald has stopped short once again in its reporting of a story re Candelori. Candelori and his son are operating a real estate firm in Berlin called Creative Real Estate. How did he (Candelori) get a license from the State?
This Mattabassett Situation really "STINKS". What smells worse is the democratic service on our council. I agree with Jim Sanders Jr.. As a voter and taxpayer I want the resignation of any council member who votes to re-appoint William Candelori.
Sherwood....Acorn......Sherwood... ...unions.....Sherwood.....working families.....Sherwood..... multi million dollar union contract....Sherwood.....takes advice from criminal.......Sherwood....;???????What is his agenda. As a tax payer Sherwood, I HAVE MY EYE ON YOU!
Frank, Another ridiculous accusation against the mayor by Sherwood. FYI the feds are already looking into Candelori's antics which is why the mayor does not want him to serve. If you got the goods then bring them out into the open Mr.Sherwood. Taking the word of a convicted felon over you sitting mayor, how partisan and disrespectful is he? Someone needs to ask Candelori, Trueworthy and Sherwood what their connections to the auditing firm Kosten and Ruffkess are. They have been lobbying for them for several years now and should have been sued by the people at Blun, Shapiro for their unprofessional slanderous attacks last year on the council floor. More to come!
Ah, Phil Sherwood, John McNamara and the New Britain Democratic Party. Self proclaimed protectors of the people.
This is so blatantly partisan that it is sickening.
People lost their entire savings, Investors went bankrupt, people went to jail, and one person took their own life.
Even after the collapse some of Mr. Candelori's associates were caught converting profits from the Colonial financial fiasco caused in part by Mr. Candelori's participation in this fraud to casino chips to avoid returning it to those who were defrauded!!!! A true upstanding crew I guess.
The New Britain Democratic Party and especially Mr. Sherwood have sunk to unimaginable depths.
AFSCME is the union representing the workers at the Mattabassett and coincidentally, one of the other appointments that was vetoed along with Candelori's was that of Mr. Edward Sasso, an employee of AFSCME. The Herald has reported on Mr. Sasso's conflicts in the past. Here is just one of their articles, where Trueworthy came to his rescue:
Trueworthy vindicates Sasso Thursday, August 2, 2007 3:00 AM By By: RICK GUINNESS
He was under scrutiny by his city's Common Council for his refusal to recuse himself from closed-door sessions regarding the union he leads as president.
But council majority leader Michael Trueworthy reviewed the minutes of the May 21 meeting that had caused such a furor and realized the board was not just discussing union business that night, but also pending litigation and the inclusion of Middletown into the district, which serves Cromwell, New Britain and Berlin.
"Sasso should be fully authorized to discuss the possible expansion of the district," Trueworthy said, "and to enter into executive session to discuss litigation."
Trueworthy made this statement after reading Sasso's letter to board chairman William P. Candelori, in which Sasso said he would recuse himself in the future from any vote regarding Local 818, the supervisors union of which he is president.
The man quoted as saying " I will continue to ask questions to keep an eye on the taxpayers pocketbooks" Sherwood should be ashamed of himself. I am discusted and the taxpayers of this city should be to.
I wonder if these people get together and have late night pajama parties and gossip like little school girls to come up with this crap.
Don't we expect our mayor to encourage the city to give work to local businesses who are paying New Britain taxes and employing people here in New Britain over sending our tax money out of state???
What is the problem?
Maybe someone needs to look into why they were so hell bent to give this contract to an out of state vendor over of local one?
The man quoted as saying " I will continue to ask questions to keep an eye on the taxpayers pocketbooks" Sherwood should be ashamed of himself. I am discusted and the taxpayers of this city should be to.
How is it "keeping an eye on the taxpayer's pocketbooks" to put a convicted felon in charge of $100 million from that pocketbook??

Something stinks to high heavens about this entire Mattabassett issue.
I don't hear Sherwood asking Sasso "where's the beef" in a similar way to how he embarrassed that developer recently!
Where did Ed Sasso retire from? New Britain Public Works Department?
Edward Sasso, AFSCME Building & Grounds Coordinator
Hey Lou,
Sounds like your majority leader is being anti-Italian now?
What is this city coming to when 2 families that helped build this city are denigrated by a little pissant like Phil Sherwood?
What does Sherwood have against Italians???
