Dr. Candelori's Never Ending Tax Problems!

FRANKSMITHSAYSNB EDITORIAL:

Dr. Candelori is no stranger to tax problems, having pleaded guilty to tax evasion in 1992 as reported in The York Times: "Late last year. William P. Candelori, a former state lawmaker and executive at Colonial, pleaded guilty to Federal tax evasion for failing to report hundreds of thousands in income" ("2 Partners In Investment Plead Guilty" The New York Times, June 9, 1993).

Dr. Candelori is also no stranger to tax problems here in New Britain. As previously reported on this blog, he was delinquent on his 2008 real estate taxes, only having paid his 2008 real estate taxes on 7/22/09. According to the Tax Collectors office, as of 11/16/09, Dr. Candelori still owes his 2009 Real Estate taxes, which were due on 7/1/09. As of 9/11/09, his outstanding debt to the City of New Britain was $2,442.37, which with the additional interest added in, would add up to almost $2,500.00 still outstanding for real estate taxes.

Perhaps Alderman Catanzaro should have asked the good doctor to pay his delinquent taxes before making a motion at last week's council meeting for Candelori to be re-appointed to The Mattabassett District, a position whereby he will have considerable power over an excess of $100 million in taxpayer dollars--when considering the planned plant expansion and the annual operating budget.

Given this individual's past as an Executive with Colonial Realty (Connecticut's own Madoff style ponzi scheme) it makes you wonder why the Democrats on the council are so anxious to ram through an appointment of this individual to such a powerful position. Even after council Republicans asked for the appointment to be delayed long enough for the council to appoint a sub-committee to interview each of the candidates, the Democratic Majority blocked creation of such a committee and rammed the appointment through--despite the public information that is already known about this appointee.

This once again raises serious concerns for the lack of any apparent vetting process in the appointment of city commissioners and directors--positions where depending on the particular board or commission, they may have huge power over large sums of public money, not to mention the hiring, promoting or firing of city employees, or the awarding of lucrative contracts.

This situation at Mattabassett highlights the need to create a proper vetting process for appointees to these powerful city positions. In the meantime, Mayor Stewart needs to take action to protect the interests of the taxpayers by vetoing this appointment, and making sure any future appointtee is properly vetted.

What are the Democrats afraid that the Republicans would have found if they had an opportunity to interview these appointees before the Democrats blindly rammed through the appointments?

What was the urgency?

What are they trying to hide????

You mean the champion of ethics reform, Phil Sherwood, went along with all this??

Something is wrong with this picture? Maybe organized crime or something.

After reading this one, I wouldn't be surprised if the Dems run the original Bernie Madoff for Mayor next time around.

The Colonial Realty case was cited as a legal precedent in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York, in the case of the liquidation of assets for Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC, so would the real Bernie Madoff please stand up??

Wasn't it "DEEP THROAT" who always said "FOLLOW THE MONEY?"

Does Alderman Sherwood even know about the Colonial Realty situation? He probably does; Ben Sisti just might be his role model!!

Do we have to accept this appointment as taxpayers? Where can we file a private citizen's complaint? Would Dick Blumenthal
be apt to get his face on TV and help the citizens of New Britain
out of this wrongdoing? He likes to get involved and usually is pretty successful in bringing issues to a head. Do you think he
would help in this case?

Let's ring him up....

Could there be more red flags?

Colonial Realty, pleaded guilty to federal tax evasion for failing to report hundreds of thousands of dollars in income, doesn't pay his own property taxes but we are going to give him control of hundreds of thousands of dollars of other taxpayer's money, and then there is that scandal reported in the New London Day about the cast of cronies he is involved in with that real estate deal in Groton that has him being named in pending litigation.

Apparently the only thing that matters to the council Democrats is that he too is a fellow Democrat!

Where's the ethics Czar Sherwood to question these credentials???

I guess it is true that he is only the Czar for Republican ethics, in other words, a real phony.

Blumenthal is nothing more than a political hack who loves seeing himself on TV. If this were a Republican or a rich businessman who needed to be punished for being so rich in the eyes of the Democrats, then you would be hearing Blumenthal all over the media!

But you will hear nothing but silence from the big defender of the people when the shenanigans are portrayed by one of his fellow Democrats.

Stewart will come through with the veto.

Dick Blumenthal recently stood with Chris Dodd and even the indicted Mayor of Hartford, so that tells you where his ethics are!!!

"D" is all that seems to matter to him, too!

Isn't it just amazing that one after another, we keep reading stories about Democrats who love to spend our hard earned money, but don't seem to see a need to pay their own taxes?

Not surprising that phony Phil Sherwood, who claims to stand for such strict ethical standards, has nothing to say about the appointment of such a questionable character to manage our money?

At least Sherwood could ask him to pay his taxes, couldn't he?

With any hope, Mayor Stewart will do the right thing and veto this ridiculous appointment. Obvious there is a desperate need for background checks on anyone seeking such a powerful position.

It seems to me that by their total silence on this subject, The New Britain Herald is part of the problem, not the solution.
