Congratulations to both Alderman Carlozzi and Alderwoman Collins for having to guts to oppose the Majority leader's attempt to dump the city auditing firm.
Quoted from The New Britain Herald from Jim Craven's article, (1/8/10): "Alderman Louis Salvio said that by putting the process out for bid after publishing the contract with Blum Shapiro, the city would be giving competing bidders an unfair advantage and perhaps opening up the city to legal action."
"Sherwood, however, indicated he was not concerned."
“It is this body’s obligation — legal obligation, and our authority, and our authority alone, to choose the auditor of this city,” Sherwood said.
“If it is sufficiently proven to this body that we have entered into a contract for numerous years with Blum Shapiro and we can’t back out, fine. Then this might sound widely irresponsible but cut them the check. I want a new set of eyes looking at our books.”
"The issue of paying Blum Shapiro $250,000 to end their options and then having to pay additional public funds for a new auditor was later called irresponsible by Salvio."
Since he first took office as a Council member in 2007, Sherwood has set himself up as The FOI Czar, The Ethics Czar and has now proclaimed himself as (see quotes, etc. above attributed to Sherwood by Jim Craven) an expert on all things legal, all obligations and duties of Council Members as provided by the City's Charter and a financial expert/Czar. Sorry Phil, your 11 Democratic votes are not always there for you.
Council members take an oath to be responsible in doing their job to act at all times in what are the best interests of all the citizens of New Britain.
Sherwood showed his arrogance as quoted above by indicating he was so adamant about getting a different auditor, that he was willing to play fast and loose with taxpayers' money by saying, " cut them a check." This comment by Sherwood shows his power hungry attitude by his willingness to use New Britain Taxpayer money to get what "HE" wants.
Sherwood has never offered even a modicum of evidence to indicate why he feels so adamant about our current independent auditor. He simply shows that he wants to be "KING OF THE HILL"! Sorry Phil, you'll have to earn that kind of respect and you are way short of attainment.
Lou, Maybe Sherwood's new found buddy, Dick--the destroyer of business and jobs--Blumenthal will help Sherwood attain that "king of the hill" status after he makes Sherwood his campaign manager!
I'm sure a cushy 6 figure job in Washington will ultimately materialize for Sherwood, if he gets his fellow liberal extremist elected.
Council members take an oath to act and vote for all those issues that are in the best interests of the people of New Britain. Party affiliation should not and must not be of the utmost in importance when making decisions on how to vote on an issue. Thus, I feel it is patronizing and unnecessary to thank Carlozzi and Collins for voting their conscience in the recent vote on an independent city auditor. They did what they are supposed to do, namely, vote their conscience undoubtedly something we in New Britain have not seen from this Council and those before it for a long time. Applaud them for doing what they should! Sherwood, Trueworthy and Hermanowski notwithstanding!
If voting your conscience takes courage, God help us.!
Alderman Carlozzi and Alderwoman Collins I thank you for putting the good of the city before your party. As a tax payer I'd like to know what this independent auditing firm has done wrong. Alderman Sherwood since the tax payers of New Britain are NOT your priority I suggest you come up with the $250,000 out of your own pocket so you can have your way.
Buried within the article is Sherwood's and Trueworthy's insistence that the City is $10M in debt and is claiming a grand conspiracy from the Mayor to the Finance Director to the INDEPENDENT auditor.
Give it a rest! New Britain BALANCED its books and had a SURPLUS.
Phil Sherwood especially, Mike Trueworthy and Larry Hermanowski should be impeached! Sherwood in particular should be sued by Blum Shapiro interfering with the legal and honest performance of their business.

I agree Frank, it's nice to see some individual opinions shine through. Jim Sanders
