Nothing will stop until you put everyone who breaks the law by crossing the border illegally into jail where they belong. They should serve hard time and be punished severely, then deport them once their sentence is finished. Start locking them up for 5 years every time you catch them, and how many will come? You won't need a wall because no one will dare violate the law, once it is actually enforced for the first time.
I am tired of hearing all the bleeding hearts moaning about the deplorable conditions these people are fleeing in Mexico. Quite frankly, that is Mexico's problem and not my concern. Let their government fix their own problems.
