FRANKSMITHSAYSNB EDITORIAL:
During the Standing Bonding Subcommittee meeting of the Common Council an unusual argument happened between the Council's Majority leader, Phil Sherwood, and a member of the Board of Education over the Bonding issue.
It seems that the Majority Leader expressed to that Board member that he wants to allocate more funding for the DiLoreto school project because he has two children in the school system and that his wife wants him to move out of town to a better school system. The board member immediately responded with " you are not in this for the overall representation of your constituents but for your own interest as an alderman."
I believe this carpet bagger's wife has it right and that he should move his family back to where they came from along with his agitator method of operation where his style will be unwelcomed.

At this time, does the Majority Leader have any children in the school system?
My observations and experiences are similar to the many people (young families) moving out of New Britain. Yes, my wife is guilty of being very concerned about our kids future, as am I. Paul Carver is not being truthful by saying I wanted more money for schools because my wife wants to move out.
I find some of your comments mean spirited and believe we should be welcoming young families to our city.
Frank, at least your no longer posting threats of violence against my family and I as you have in the past. Maybe your growing up or perhaps it was because the police had to investigate you.
By the way my position on school funding last night seemed to be almost unanimous.
I'm tired of families telling me that when there kids get to x age that they hope to move out of NB.
We can do better and this project will provide an amazing option for families of middle school ages...I just wish we had funded it fully. I don't believe we did. And yes, I hope dearly my son and daughter get to go to DiLoreto. Every one I have spoken to about it speaks highly of it but also acknowledges that it is woefully outdated.
Phil: Your claim that the Police department had to investigate me was from your complaint regarding my blog and they found that I had not done anything illegal and that your complaint was unwarranted as an alderman.
Alderman Sherwood: Stop Playing to the audience and start representing your constituents instead of just your families needs.
Frank. You are wrong. I have the police report and subpoena. Your post on your blog was deemed threatening and illegal and the only reason there was no arrest is because I asked that there not be one. It is in the police report.
When I called asked you to take down the threatening blog that said I should "wear a bullet proof vest", mentioned my child, and where I live, you laughed and refused to take it down. One of the most disgraceful acts I have witnessed as an elected official. Every elected official should understand it is an honor and privilege to serve the public and that they in turn will be subject to scrutiny and criticism, fair and unfair. Your post crossed the line and was physically threatening and intended to intimidate. You have no justification and instead of apologizing you just continue on with inaccurate mean-spirited and personal attacks.
People must be irritated - their language usage and grammar are atrocious. Tsk, tsk. As far as playing to the audience, that is all Phil knows. his next honest act on behalf on NB residents will be his first - he can't help himself.
Phil,
Don't let your family get in the way of using the New Britain town council as a stepping stone for your future political aspirations.
:-)
Below are comments from the leader of our city Council. Shame on us all for allowing such a mean-spirited moron like this to be elected and re-elected.
Paul Carver is not being truthful...
Frank, at least your no longer posting threats of violence against my family...
...perhaps it was because the police had to investigate you.
(And people, please stop telling me that come election time, you'll all remember and vote him out. Come election time, you all stay home and then start complaining a week later.)
Alderman Sherwood:
Once again you twist the facts and mislead the public to believe that I was somehow responsible for the post you keep referring to when,in fact the message in question was posted on my blog by one of your constituents,so whether or not you have an issue with the content of the message, that is an issue between you and one of your constituents.
First of all, DiLoreto School is not in Alderman Sherwood's district...I hope that he doesn't move to that area, because that's where I live. We don't want him here.
Second, Alderman Sherwood knows that Frank Smith did not make that "bulletproof vest" comment, which he called in the police in on. Also, anyone in their right mind knows that it was a figure of speech, rather than a threat.
Stop holding onto a grudge from almost a year ago. Come back to the future Mr. Sherwood.
If you're tired of families telling you that when their children reach a certain age they will move out of New Britain..Rather than moving out, these families enroll their children in the very fine Parochial schools here.
Sherwood, if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. That is a piece of advice, not a threat.
Maybe you should listen to your wife, and move out of town...
I have never met Mrs. Sherwood but I like her already. Anyone that could get Sherwood to move out of town is A.O.K. in my book!
I might know of a pool house in Berlin that might be available.
The meeting was specifically to recommend bonding for a ten million dollar (parameter) addition to the DiLoreto Magnet School. This has become necessary following the decision two years ago to add a middle school to the existing elementary school. This decision added 200 students, additional staff and vehichles to the facility. The building does not meet the necessary occupancy requirements. Whether this decision was correct two years ago was not up for discussion.
Everyone agreed that DiLoreto is an exceptional learning center and that continuing the education through the 8th grade is a productive way to keep New Britain students in New Britain rather than having them transfer to private or out of town magnet schools. This magnet school draws students city wide through a lottery sytem. Many of us, questioned the dollar amount concerns, two fold, is this amount sufficient to do the job right, and can the city afford this during these economic times. It was agreed to move forward within the set-forth parameters of ten million dollars.
Several of us opened the discussion to get the job done right the first time or possibly face additional overruns or expenses in the future. The state of CT would share in the expansion at a rate of approximately 78%. The city would bond out the difference. This item now goes to council and then out to bid so we are still in a fact finding process.
I would ask that personal attacks be eliminated from the discussion. It serves little purpose other than to stop progress here in the city of New Britain which seems to be a habit.
Should this reach an acceptable bid process, I hope as much attention and oversight will be given to the project as is given to attacking members of the community on both sides of the fence.
Alot of taxpayer dollars were expended on the three main middle schools for re-construction and upgrades only a few years ago. It would have been great if the physical building changes would have changed the perception of the education that goes on inside rather than having to set-up alternative middle schools within our school system.
Mr. Sherwood, if you are SO concerned about education in this fine city, perhaps you and Representative O'Brien should wine and dine some of your friends at the state Capitol. That is the only place where education can be adequately funded. This city cannot afford the mandates the state puts on us. As it is, they don't fully fund their special education requirements, and that alone would correct our BOE budget woes, as it accounts for 27% of BOE spending. The legislature is the only body that can correct the Educational Cost Sharing formula, and that is body DOMINATED by your party.
The Democrats will no doubt ram whatever they want down our throats, just like their party's government take over of our health care.
When the project at DiLoreto School is completed, how will the increased traffic be handled..extra school buses, parents picking up their children from school, etc.? The traffic at the end of the school day now is very congested.
In response: The expansion of DiLoreto School will provide for the traffic and congestion with bus turnarounds, additional parking
and take the current on-street parking off-street. The school expanded it's student base two years ago.
I did not know that Phil Sherwood had such powers over the New Britain Police Department and that by his request alone to the Police there was no arrests. Is Phil Sherwood that powerful that he can influence the New Britain Police? If this is so, how has he influenced the police before and is it common practice for the New Britain Police to be influence by politicians in this way?
