Hartford mayor stepping down after conviction
Friday, June 18, 2010 5:04 PM EDT

Hartford Mayor Eddie Perez has announced that he is stepping down from office after his criminal conviction earlier today.

Perez said he intends to appeal his conviction.

The one-time gang leader who escaped an impoverished childhood to become Hartford’s first Latino mayor was convicted Friday of five corruption charges, including taking a bribe and attempted extortion.

Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz issued the following statement Friday about the voting rights of convicted felons.

"Connecticut state law says a person who is convicted of a felony and incarcerated for that crime cannot serve in elective office because they lose their right to vote. Now that Hartford Mayor Eddie Perez has been convicted of several felony counts, he will not be able to serve as mayor once he is in physical custody of the state, meaning the day he begins his incarceration. Therefore, Eddie Perez can technically continue to serve as mayor until that day, unless he is removed from office by the city council prior to then.''

So many politicians, mostly Democrats, are getting arrested lately all over the country, that I can understand why one of their prominent party members would want the mayor to continue to serve as mayor until he is actually incarcerated. Isn't this the same Secretary of the State who swore she did not practice law in Connecticut before she swore she did practice law in Connecticut, and it took the Supreme Court to unanimously rule that she is unqualified to run for Attorney General????

Perez and Bysiewicz must make their party leaders very proud!

The lead story in the Herald today is that Perez was framed because he is Hispanic and whites can't stand having such a powerful Hispanic.

That one article says it all about the radical views of the Herald!

Attorney General Richard Blumenthal also released a statement regarding Perez's pension revocation and said, "State law empowers my office to ask a court to revoke pensions of state and municipal officials convicted of corruption. My office will seek revocation of mayor Perez's pension upon final judgment."

Blumenthal plans to sue Perez for his pension, but Bysiewicz urges Perez to stay in office until they slam the cell door shut on him?

When are people going to realize it does matter who you elect to these positions? Look at the results of electing the most radical, inexperienced President ever. He never even ran so much as a corner grocery, and these people put him in charge of the entire nation. Now they don't understand why he is falling flat on his face with the most failed Presidency in US history? Obama has never and most likely never will reach the high level of popularity that George W. Bush received.

Now look at some of the crackpots you put on the city council. Enough said!
