This is a good start, but I am not convinced that anything that happens in Bridgeport is related to New Britain.
What is really needed is the sharing of information between area departments. Several police departments in the New Haven area have been doing this for over 25 years. They call it the South Central reporting district, and a number of New Haven area police departments use the same records system so that a police officer in one town can see the previous police contacts an individual had with other police officers in area towns that are within the reporting district. Hartford has been a pioneer in this area by allowing area departments to have a computer terminal on their in house records system, but that only allows a dispatcher to look at Hartford's information, and does not allow for the complete open sharing of information between departments. Another good start, but more would be better.
Here in the Hartford area, every time you cross a town line it has the effect of you being on another island with little or no information being made available between the towns' different police departments other than what is already available through state run systems (very little). How many times do we hear that the same suspects who were involved in crimes in New Britain were also suspects in Newington, Berlin, Plainville, Farmington, Meriden, etc?? With the technology available today, officers in all these departments should be able to access this information from the laptops right in their cruisers if it weren't for the lack of cooperation and no doubt the cost.
The chief is on the right track, and sharing with a city like Hartford that is in proximity to New Britain is a good thing, but if he wants to get an edge on some of these multi-town offenders, he should start looking for ways to open communications between area towns and forget about Bridgeport.
