The question is that Blumenthal went to great length to avoid combat in Vietnam, and then improperly created an impression of personal valor. Blumenthal can say he is proud of his service in the Marine Corps Reserves stationed in Washington, D.C. collecting Toys for Tots.
It's just not the same as combat in the Vietnam Tet Offensive. Plus the voters don't know the difference between membership in The American Legion and/or membership in VFW- Veterans of Foreign Wars.
